Synopsis

Yusuke trains with Hokushin and a few others, and gets beaten up. But he tells them to stop holding back on him, and fight like they mean it -it's not training otherwise. Meanwhile, at Mukuro's mobile fortress, Mukuro asks his number two, Kirin, how Hiei is doing. Kirin reports that, as requested, 500 A class demons have been sent to fight Hiei, and he must be dead by now. However Hiei is still alive, having defeated every opponent sent to fight him over the course of the last six months.

Hiei dreams about his past. His mother, Hina, had an affair with someone outside their land. Usually ice maidens do not need a partner to bear a child, and they usually only have one child, which is always a girl. However, Hina had twins, and one of them was a boy. The elders wanted Hiei dead, and Rui, one of Hina's closest friends, threw him off their floating island homeland. Before she did, she gave him a crystal -Hina cried two tears when he and his sister were born, and he and Yukina were given a crystal each. Back in the present, Mukuro tells Hiei that he may be ready to fight one of his warriors. Hiei wants to know more about Mukuro, so Mukuro says that if he can beat this warrior, he will show him what he looks like, and also let him become one of his selected 77 most powerful warriors.

As Mukuro heads off to go and get Hiei his opponent, Hiei thinks back. Before Yusuke left for the Demon Realm, Yukina passed him her crystal, and told him to give it to her brother, if he finds him. She believes her brother and Hiei are alike, as her brother is meant to have a powerful, fiery demon energy. Hiei tells her her brother must be dead, if he was thrown from a castle in the sky. Yukina is sure he is alive, so Hiei asks her why. She says it was something else Rui said: she believed that boy would someday come back to take revenge. Hiei realize Rui was the one who threw him, long ago. Before she threw Hiei, Rui told him to come back to them alive, and when he does, kill her first. That will be all she could do to make things up to Hina. Yukina also reveals she had fled from her homeland, and her story about being given time to look for her brother was a lie. She said that if their land cannot survive without having its heart freeze over, she'd rather it be destroyed. Hiei tells her not to pretend to be so helpless -if she wants to destroy it, she should do it herself. She shouldn't count on any brother of hers, especially when she doesn't know if he's alive or dead. Yukina tells him he really is right. And for some reason, if she ever met her brother, he'd tell her the same thing.

Back in the present, Mukuro returns, along with Hiei's opponent: Shigure. It's revealed that Hiei and Shigure already know each other, as Shigure was the one who gave Hiei his evil eye. Shigure is surprised to see how powerful Hiei has become, as the evil eye transplant reduced Hiei's power from A class to the lowest class. But in the few years that have passed, Hiei is now even stronger than he was when he first met him. Shigure gave Hiei the jagan only because he was drawn to the life his patient. He says that Hiei wanted the evil eye to search for the Land of Glaciers, and also find his own hirui stone. His fee was that Hiei could not tell his sister he was her brother, but he's willing to return that fee, if Hiei can defeat him now. Mukuro tells the two to begin...

Manga differences

-Hina is not seen in the manga, only mentioned.

-The scene where Yusuke fights Hokushin and the others isn't in the manga.

-The scene with Mukuro and Kirin isn't in the manga.

-The scene where three demons wait around before attacking Hiei isn't in the manga.

-In the manga, Yukina sheepishly explains that she washed her crystal before giving it to Hiei. This was cut from the anime.

Notes

-The episode does not have a pre-title opening recap.

-During Hiei's first dream, he has several flashbacks to previous events in the series, which are shown very briefly. However, two images are from a manga-exclusive bonus story the anime does not adapt, which shows how Hiei and Kurama first met. Together, the two defeat a demon called Yatsude.

-The two images above were also in the previous episode's next episode preview, but were in full color, rather than black and white.

-Mukuro seems to make a Star Wars reference when he tells Hiei to not expect him to say "I am your father". It also possible that his 77 selected warriors are referencing that the first Star Wars movie was released in 1977.

Errors

-Hiei's back story in this episode retcons what was seen here. The main differences are that in the earlier episode, Hiei apparently saw a younger Yukina playing in the snow, which according to this episode, would be impossible. The earlier episode also shows that the demon who operated on Hiei looked nothing like Shigure.
