Synopsis

Kurama calls his mother, and tells her that he has been thinking about his future, and promises to be back in around two weeks. His next match is due to start, as he faces off against Shigure. The two start fighting, and Shigure uses his brimstone ring blade to cause mass damage to the arena. Kurama is barely able to keep avoiding it.

Kurama uses his wind petals technique, whilst Shigure surrounds himself with energy, creating a tornado with his weapon. He dives towards Kurama and seemingly crashes into him, but when the smoke clears, Kurama reveals that he has transformed to his demon fox form. However, after again dodging Shigure's attacks, he transforms back to his original form. Shigure sees that Kurama must want to settle things in that body, and accepts his request. Kurama says he doesn't plan on denying his own strength, he just wants to protect that which is most important to him.

Things do not go well for Kurama, and he takes a bad hit to his right arm. Before Shigure can make another move, he notices some trees burst out of the ground behind him. They soon start appearing all over the place, as Kurama says that moments ago, he planted a seed in the trunk of this memory-recall tree. The tree takes over the entire arena, but Shigure uses his tornado technique again, and starts crashing his way through the tree to get to Kurama.

However, as he gets close, one of the tree branches is able to stop his ring blade. He jumps up, but as he lands, Kurama sends out several spiky branches, which stop just centimeters before Shigure's face. Shigure admits defeat, and before Kurama can even try to stop him, Shigure leaps off the tree, to his death. He thinks that a swordsman cannot lose twice, and Lord Mukuro is his only master.

Kurama then collapses, and as Yusuke and the others rush off to the arena, by the time they get there, they see that Yomi has helped Kurama. Yomi asks Kurama if he has forsaken his demon fox self. Kurama says he doesn't forsake anything -not ever. As Yomi walks off, Yusuke and the others run up to Kurama.

Manga differences

-In the manga, it is only mentioned that Kurama defeated Shigure, the actual fight is not shown. The other major difference is that Shigure does not die -he appears near the end of the manga, but for the anime, he kills himself.

Notes

-I may as well mention Shigure's apparent resurrection. He was clearly killed in this episode, but has since made a few quick cameos in a few episodes before this one, and now fully appears here. No explanation is given to how he was returned to life. Hiei was seen being restored to life, but the injuries he got in his battle with Shigure were nowhere near as bad. I guess we can only believe that the medical technology of the Demon Realm is really, really good.
