Synopsis

Genkai explains that the tunnel is a subspace boundary, which connects the Human Realm to the Demon Realm. She asks if they want to go and see it, as it's in the city Kido, Kaito and Yana are from: Mushiyori City. Ayame flies over the city and can see that things are happening, and she reports to Koenma. Koenma contacts Botan and the others, and explains that he believes the second phase has been reached. He tells them that the first phase involves low classes of Demon Realm lifeforms being able to flourish -such as the Makai insects. The second phase has humans gaining strange abilities. The third phase will allow D class demons to pass through to Earth. The fourth phase will allow much more powerful demons to come through. He says this includes A and S rank demons, and reveals that Toguro was only ranked as an upper B class.

He also explains about how the Demon Realm is deep and vast. Deep down within the Demon Realm, there are A and S class demons. S class demons are beyond the control of even the Spirit Realm. He that the subspace forming a boundary between the Demon and Human Realms is sealed within a powerful periphery field. This periphery field is there to keep A and S class demons from getting out. B class and lower demons are capable of passing through the gaps, but they can't afford to let a single A or S class demon through, if that happened, the entire world would be in danger. To stop the tunnel from opening, they must stop the spell caster at the center of the distortion. Elsewhere, a man called Sensui meets with elder Toguro -the latter is currently just a head in a fish tank. Toguro tells him there will be those will want to stop him from opening the hole to the Demon Realm, and asks Sensui to take vengeance on them. Sensui says he doesn't take orders, but he won't let anyone interfere in something this enjoyable. Sensui thinks that humans, who destroy everything and consume everything to satisfy their boundless hunger... the time when they will be judged has come.

Genkai restores Kaito's soul, and he, along with Kido and Yana, properly introduce themselves. Yusuke wants them to take him to the tunnel now, but Genkai stops him. She says they have no idea who their enemies are, who their boss is, and how many of them are there. Hiei then interrupts, and asks Koenma a question: what rank of demon is he? Koenma says he's ranked as a B class, which Hiei isn't pleased with. Koenma says he was only an upper D class when he fought Yusuke, but Hiei doesn't care for his flattery.

Hiei says he doesn't care about what happens to the Human Realm either. He says he won't interfere with them, but he won't help them either, and plans to return to the Demon Realm. He then leaves, but Yusuke is sure he'll come around. Genkai says they won't take any action until daybreak, and they'll need the help of Kido and the others. Yusuke asks them if they're ok with that, and Yana says they are -they aren't just going to watch on as their city turns into some horrifying spectacle. Kaito says now they have these abilities, they've chosen to use them to protect the Human Realm. Genkai says for now, they all need to get plenty of sleep. Tomorrow morning, they'll split into two teams, and gets a sense of how bad things are in the city. Meanwhile, Sensui visits Itsuki, the one who is opening the hole to the Demon Realm.

Itsuki says they have an obstacle: whilst he can open the hole, he can't bring down the peripheral field. They need someone with the ability to cut through the peripheral field in subspace. Sensui says he understands, and will make sure he finds someone. The next morning, Keiko finds Puu waiting outside her room, but when she tries to bring him inside, he flies off. She starts running after him, and Shizuru happens to see her. Keiko tells her that she heard Yusuke didn't come home last night, and Puu was just trembling. Shizuru says her brother didn't come back either. She suggests they follow Puu, as he might know where Yusuke and the others are. As the two are about to head off, Shizuru sees something in the distance, and says she has a bad feeling about this. She's got the sense that there's something incredibly dreadful in store for them.

Manga differences

-The manga only mentions certain things that will happen as things go from one phase to the next. The anime actually shows them, such as the D and S class demons attacking.

-In the manga, Sensui is already in the room. The anime shows him walking into a building and using an elevator to get to it.

-In the manga, the part with Sensui and Itsuki is shown before the part where Genkai restores Kaito's soul. In the anime it's the other way around.

-In the manga, the people standing behind Sensui don't look like who they're supposed to be. In the anime, they look exactly like who they're supposed to be.

-Genkai punches Yusuke on the back of the head in the manga. In the anime, she uses some technique to flip him over.

-The door Hiei walks through when he leaves has a different design in the manga.

-The scene at the end with Puu, Keiko and Shizuru wasn't in the manga.

Errors

-During this shot, Kido's mouth opens and closes for a few seconds, but he doesn't say anything.
