Synopsis
Yusuke has beaten Toguro, and his team are declared the champions of the Dark Tournament. Yusuke is upset that his actions led to Kuwabara's death... only to find out that Kuwabara never actually died. For some reason, Toguro didn't hit Kuwabara's vitals, and so Kuwabara is back up. He reveals that he pretended to be dead, to give Yusuke some needed shock therapy! The team wonder why Toguro didn't kill Kuwabara, and Kurama thinks it may have been because Toguro wasn't planning on killing Kuwabara in the first place. He gets the feeling that Toguro was waiting all along for things to turn out like this: for someone who was really strong to come and defeat him. Sakyo heads over and says he agrees, as when he thought Toguro was happier than he'd ever seen him, once he'd first met Urameshi.
He says he has lost the wager, but Koenma says he doesn't want his life. However Sakyo pulls out a device and activates the stadium's self-destruct sequence, saying it will go up along with him and his ambitions. He walks off, but Koenma goes after him. Yusuke and the others head off to help the girls get out, but Shizuru sees Sakyo walking off, and heads after him. As the stadium starts to crumble, Koto is determined to stay for the commendation ceremony, but is almost killed when some debris falls down above her. Juri saves her just in time, and the two flee from the stadium together. Under the stadium, Koenma confronts Sakyo. Sakyo explains about his plan to create a tunnel between the Demon Realm and Human Realm, and how he wanted to let demons of any nature come through to Earth. But now his dream will be blown away. The two then see Shizuru, who walks into the room. Sakyo says nothing, but tosses her his lighter.
There's then an explosion, which causes the ceiling to crumble. It falls down over Sakyo, whilst Koenma has to drag Shizuru away. Yusuke's group meets up with Botan's, but they find they Keiko is still unresponsive. Yusuke tries talking to her, but then resorts to slapping her to try and get her to wake up. This does the trick, as Keiko suddenly regains her senses and slaps Yusuke back, hard!
The group run towards an exit, only to find that their path is blocked. There's no time for them to try and find another way out, and none of the Urameshi team have any energy left to destroy the debris. Thankfully Chu, Rinku, Jin and Toya appear to clear away the rubble, and let everyone escape. Just before she resumes running, Keiko sees Puu flying after them, and grabs him.
Koenma and Shizuru also follow, but they also find Jorge trapped under some rubble. Koenma is surprised he's still here, and helps him up -although Jorge thinks he's really cold for saying "are you still here?". Everyone manages to escape in time, but Botan realizes that the team won't be able to get their prizes -they were each supposed to receive whatever they wanted. Yusuke says it doesn't matter, as he wouldn't be able to get what he wanted anyway. He shouts up to Genkai, and tells her that they've won.
-The parts of the episode where the girls react to Kuwabara being alive after all, along with Koenma telling Yusuke to stop beating up Kuwabara, were not in the manga.
-In the manga, Sakyo does not walk up to the Urameshi team, and he activates the stadium's self-destruct before telling them that he agrees with Kurama's thoughts on Toguro.
-In the manga, Sakyo does not walk off into the stadium, he remains out where the ring used to be. He doesn't speak to Koenma, nor does he see or give his lighter to Shizuru. He thinks about how he would have liked to have seen the tunnel, and then laughs as parts of the stadium collapse over him.
-In the manga, Juri and Koto aren't seen again after they announce Yusuke as the victor. They clearly do survive, since they both show up in the manga much later on. The anime added a scene where Juri saves Koto, which convinces the latter that they need to leave.
-The shot of Kuwabara looking annoyed that Hiei saved Yukina wasn't in the manga.
-In the manga, Yusuke and the others all manage to escape from the stadium without any issues. The anime added a new part where they get cut off along with some other demons, but Chu, Rinku, Jin and Toya save them by destroying part of the debris.
-The part where Koenma saves Jorge wasn't in the manga, as Jorge isn't in the story.
-Keiko carries Yusuke out herself in the manga, but in the anime, Kurama helps Yusuke run.
-In the manga, Atsuko is the one who asks about the prizes for winning, but as she isn't present in the anime, her dialogue was given to Botan instead.
-This episode does not have the usual style of opening recap sequence at the start. Instead, the title card immediately appears after the intro, and then the first few minutes show the last few minutes from the previous episode.
-Sakyo's lighter has the initials "S.N" engraved on it. Presumably the S is for Sakyo, but we never find out what the N is for.
-Koto's legs are skin colored during this shot.
-And again during this shot.
