Synopsis

Hiei arrives at the place where Genkai and Toguro fought, and notices the massive crater Toguro created with one of his punches. He punches the ground as well, but realizes his power doesn't currently compare to Toguro's. He vows to master the black dragon wave. Meanwhile, Kuwabara does some image training, and takes on Karasu. But no matter what he does, he can't win, and he realizes that there is no way for him to win as he is now. Kuwabara then finds him and asks if he's seen Urameshi, but he hasn't. Suzuki then comes over to them, having wanting to find the two of them alone. Kuwabara doesn't recognize him at first, but Suzuki says he's realized the error of his ways, and has something for them both.

He gives Kurama the previous world's fruits, and Kuwabara the sword of trials. If Kurama was to drink his item, it should change him to his fox demon form for a long time. Kuwabara's sword of trials draws out the energy of whoever holds it in order to grow. He warns them that both items are in the experimental stages, so he doesn't now what kid of side effects they might have. He tells them to either use the items or toss them away, it's up to them. Kurama asks why he's giving these items to them, and he says that he once fought Toguro, but even though Toguro was only at 30% power, it terrified him. He begged for his life, and Toguro found him so pathetic he told him he'd lost his will to kill him. Suzuki improved his skills, changed his name and appearance, and entered the tournament with his team. But now he's been beaten, he just wants to believe that there's someone even stronger than Toguro. He's learnt he's not the one, but he wants to believe that someone will come along and destroy Toguro's sense of values. Elsewhere, Koenma finds Yusuke sitting in front of the cave where he had his final trial. Yusuke believes if he'd gotten there sooner he could have saved Genkai, but Koenma asks if he really would have interrupted Genkai and Toguro's fight to the death. Yusuke resumes sitting in front of the cave, whilst Koenma wonders if Genkai's trial also included overcoming this sorrow. At the hotel, some of Sakyo's colleagues learn what Sakyo intends to do with the winnings he'll get if his team wins the tournament. Sakyo intends to open a large hole between the Human and Demon Realms, allowing much more powerful demons to enter the Human Realm. They think he's insane, as the life of every human would be in danger, but Sakyo doesn't care, he just finds his plan interesting.

His colleagues decide to try and stop him, and have some demons enter the room. They set them on Sakyo, but Toguro then appears, and promptly slaughters them all. Sakyo asks Toguro what his thoughts are on his plan. Toguro isn't sure if Sakyo is insane or not, but he will cooperate with his plan. This is because he needs someone to fight -once he kills Urameshi, there will be nobody left for him to fight in the Human Realm. So he wants to be able to go to the Demon Realm. Later on, Koenma goes back to where Yusuke is, and says he has a message from Genkai: she thought he was a poor pupil, so she doesn't want to see him for a while -he's not to cross over to where she is. But there is one last part to her message: he is to win.

Yusuke calls her an old hag, and decides to send her a reply. He shoots an almighty spirit gun blast, which heads high up into the sky. He asks Koenma if he thinks the blast reached Genkai, and Koenma is sure it did. Yusuke has gotten over his sorrow over the death of Genkai, and tomorrow, he faces mortal combat with the Toguro team. As Yusuke looks at the sky, one star briefly shines brightly.

Manga differences

-There is a brief scene in the manga set in a hospital room, where a nurse warns Suzuki not to get up yet, as his wounds aren't healed up. Suzuki says he'll be right back, whilst Risho can also be seen in a bed, questioning how he lost. This scene is not in the anime.

-In the manga, Kuwabara doesn't toss the sword of trials back to Suzuki like he does in the anime.

-In the manga, Koenma gives Yusuke Genkai's message right after he asks Yusuke if he really would have interrupted Genkai and Toguro's battle, and Yusuke then fires his spirit gun. In the anime, this was changed so Koenma doesn't give Yusuke Genkai's message until later on, after the scene with Sakyo and his colleagues.

-Because of the above change, Suzuki is still with Kuwabara and Kurama when Yusuke fires his spirit gun shot in the manga. In the anime, he's not.

-The manga has Juri talk to a spectator, who has been waiting to get a general admission seat for the final for two weeks. The fan intends to get the best seat he can, as after Toguro has killed Urameshi, he intends to feed on his corpse. This scene isn't featured in this episode, but it will be partially featured in the next one.

-In the manga, the elder Toguro is also present when Toguro slaughters the demons sent to attack Sakyo. He's not present in the anime.

Errors

-In the previous episode, Kuwabara was wearing a blue vest, but in this episode, he's wearing a white shirt.
