Synopsis
Genkai asks Toguro why he called her here, and he tells her it's to let her know how cruel the passage of time is. After learning that she has passed her spirit wave secrets to Yusuke, he tells her she no longer has any business with him... but then says it's more honest for him to say he can't put up with her any more. He doesn't want to look at her aged self any longer. Genkai thinks he hasn't changed, and remembers something from many years ago. Toguro told her that they were at the height of their strength, but he was afraid of someone stronger coming along and losing to them because of him aging. Back in the present, Genkai tells Toguro that she can't put up with him, either, as he sold his soul in order to cling to a moment's strength. The battle begins, and Genkai attacks with a spirit gun blast. It hits Toguro's left arm and seems to badly damage it.
He counters with a punch, which Genkai just manages to avoid a direct hit from. He reveals he was fighting with 45% of his power, but decides to now use 80%. When he powers up to get to this state, his arm injury heals itself. He uses a powerful punch which causes a massive crater, but Genkai manages to jump out of the way just in time. She wants to get Toguro to open his eyes, and fires another spirit gun blast.
However Toguro punches through it, and his fist then hits her. Yusuke arrives just in time to see that Genkai has already been defeated, and is about to die. She reveals that she was visited by two messengers, who told her about this tournament, and that Toguro would be there. She knew that when she saw Toguro again she would die. She also reveals that she and Toguro once fought alongside each other at the previous tournament, which they won. Whilst Genkai's wish for winning was to never enter the tournament again, Toguro's wish was to become a demon, so he could preserve his strength. With her last words, Genkai tells Yusuke everyone must fight against time, but Toguro ran away from that fight. He threw away his pride, his soul and his friends. She tells Yusuke not to make that mistake, and not to forget who he's become strong for. As she dies in Yusuke's arms, some know of her death -Hiei, Kurama, Koenma, Jorge, Botan and Shizuru all realize it. However some, like Kuwabara, don't know.
Yusuke attempts to kill Toguro, and punches him. Toguro blocks it and hits Yusuke, sending him flying back through a forest. Toguro is pleased that Yusuke's attack was so powerful as the hand he used to block it has been badly mangled. He believes the day will soon come where he gets to fight with 100% of his power. Yusuke thinks about the training he went through with Genkai, and then gets back up and knocks down a massive tree by punching it. He vows that he will make Toguro pay.
