Synopsis
Genkai reveals what her final test is: to become the successor to the spirit wave technique, Yusuke must kill her. She tells him to think it over whilst she waits for him in a cave. Back at the hotel, Kuwabara and Kurama discuss the upcoming semifinals, but then Botan and the others arrive to have some fun (Hiei would rather not). Yusuke makes his decision, and tells Genkai that he can't do it -he can't kill his master. Genkai laughs and tells him he's passed the test -she would never have taken on someone who would willingly kill her to get stronger, but also didn't want someone who wouldn't at least think it over.
Genkai leads Yusuke deeper into the cave, and then creates a spirit wave orb. This orb is a ball of spirit energy, condensed to its very limits. She warns Yusuke that he is not ready to accept this, and says that when he takes the orb, it is like a small sun -if his body isn't up to taking the energy from it, it'll rip him apart! Yusuke takes the orb and absorbs it into his body, and at first nothing seems to happen. However a few seconds later, he is put into great pain as the final trial truly begins.
Meanwhile, at the new stadium where the remaining matches will be held, the Urameshi team face the Reverse Bedtime Stories team. Juri, the new referee, asks the teams to decide how they want to fight. Shishiwakamaru suggests throwing some dice, each dice has the names of team members on them. Hiei says he'll fight for when the dice lands on Yusuke or the masked fighter. The first fight has Hiei face Makintaro. Hiei starts the fight by immediately slicing one of Makintaro's arms off. Makintaro regenerates his arm and changes it's form into an axe, using a technique called masakari ken (demon instigating-hunt fist). He attempts to attack Hiei...
...but only hits his afterimage. Hiei stabs his sword through Makintaro's head, killing him instantly. He tells Shishiwakamaru to roll the dice, as he has a feeling his name is going to come up again. In the cave, Yusuke's greatest trial continues. The semifinals go on without him, but will he be able to take the spirit wave orb?
-The scene with the Toguro brothers was not in the manga. Instead, there is a single small panel showing the younger Toguro brother smoking, and that's it.
-The anime features a longer scene in the new stadium, where Juri showcases the remaining four teams on a monitor. This isn't in the manga.
-The part where Koto asks if Hiei and Kurama will have to fight twice each, and Kuwabara calls her out, is not in the manga.
-Hiei does not throw Makintaro's severed arm to Juri in the manga, like he does in the anime.
-Makintaro's death is more violent in the anime, as he loses a lot of blood. In the manga, there's no blood.
-During part of the scene where Kuwabara plays cards, one of the cards he has has the word "Nintendo" on it. This reference may possibly be due to the fact that the first Yu Yu Hakusho video game was for Nintendo's Game Boy console. Some places have the release date as this as July 1993, others have it as August.
