The Urameshi team, having advanced to the semifinals, visited the stadium to have a look at who their next opponents would be. There, they were provoked by the Toguro team. And so, having confirmed the difference in powers between Yusuke and Toguro, the masked fighter called Yusuke out alone, and revealed that she was Genkai.
Genkai: The way you are now, you will lose, 100%! And not just to Toguro... but to me as well!
The Greatest Trial from Genkai
Genkai fires her spirit gun, and the projectile completely destroys the rock. Yusuke thinks her spirit gun is in a whole different league when compared to his own. Genkai explains that when the spirit wave is raised to its highest level, the cells are activated, and the body is temporarily changed.
She says she will give Yusuke a trial: the final, greatest trial she will ever give him. She looks at her hand and comments on old age. Whilst what she did now may have looked good, she used to be able to do even more when she was younger. She tells Yusuke that old age befalls everyone. As the years pass, your technique may become more polished, and your tactics may also grow more shrewd, but as far as standing up to overwhelming power goes, the day will come when you can no longer do so.
She uses the kind of power that Toguro has as an example. Yusuke asks her if she means that Toguro is stronger than her.
She says that he is, but there's nothing she can do about it. She tells him she'll live the way the flow takes her, then she will die. She believes that doing so is fine for her -as long as she can leave her hopes to the next generation.
She asks Yusuke one more time: is his desire to become stronger the same as it was before? He says it's even greater than before. She then asks if he can withstand anything he has to do, and he says he'll do anything. Genkai tells him that in the case, killing her is something he can do, right? Yusuke asks her what did she just say?
Genkai tells him that unless he's able to kill her, he can't pass this trial. She says that she'll be waiting in the cave ahead, and when he's prepared to kill her, he should come in. Yusuke is left alone to think it over.
Later on, Yusuke waits outside the cave's entrance. He doesn't know how he could kill her, after all they've been through together.
Everything that has made him stronger up to now has been thanks to her. She's his master... what should he do? Meanwhile, at the hotel, Kuwabara wonders where Urameshi has gone. He tells Kurama there's no way around it, the semifinals are next.
Kurama says he's heard that when the semifinals start, they'll be moving to a different arena, so the conditions will be more severe. Kuwabara is fine with that, and says to bring it on. Just then, the ladies arrive to pay them a visit.
Kuwabara wonders why they've come, as they're having a serious conversation here. Botan asks if that's the case, what are the cards for? Kuwabara tells her not to look at them, but Yukina then asks how his injuries are doing. Kuwabara's personality suddenly completely changes as he says he's fine and asks her to play cards with them. Keiko asks Kurama where Yusuke is, but Kurama says Yusuke had something to do, so is out right now.
Keiko says that for some reason, Puu hasn't been feeling well, so she's been concerned. Botan tells everyone that she should get revved up for the semifinal by throwing a real blast for themselves. Kuwabara is up for that, until Shizuru tells him he should really enjoy himself -since this might be his last bash in this world.
As the group begin to play cards, Kurama asks Hiei if he wants to join them, as they're having a lot of fun. Hiei declines, and tells Kurama he's adapted too easily.
Yusuke goes into the cave. He finds Genkai, and she tells him he must have prepared himself. Time won't wait for them, so he's to do it now. But he says he can't do it -he just can't. For the whole time he was stood out there, it was the most he's ever used his head in his whole life. But he just can't do it. Even though he wanted to be stronger...
He tells her he guesses he's not qualified to be her pupil, but says he'll manage something on his own. He wants to at least bust Toguro's sunglasses. He turns around and starts to walk out of the cave, at which point Genkai tells him he's passed the test. Yusuke wonders what she means, but she tells him to come on in, so she can present him with the trial.
Yusuke wonders what's going on, as he thought he couldn't do this trial if he couldn't kill her. Genkai laughs and asks him if he really thought she'd hand down her secrets to anyone who came to the conclusion that they could kill their master in order to become stronger? And she equally dislikes those who are so untainted that they would turn her down without taking the trouble to consider it. Yusuke doesn't know what to say.
Genkai tells him this is why he's passed. Yusuke says he's now really pissed off, but wants to do the trial, and anything else she has. Genkai leads him into the cave, and tells him not to forget the words he just said. They stop walking, and Genkai says they can begin.
She goes into a stance, and says there is something she will now give to him. The only one who can take it is the legitimate successor to the spirit wave techniques. Between her hands, a spirit wave orb appears. Elsewhere, the Toguro brothers are waiting in their hotel room, when the younger brother senses something. He says that this tournament is going to become even more interesting.
REI KOU GYOKU
(Spirit Wave Orb)
Genkai says that, to be honest, it's ten years too soon for Yusuke to be accepting this, even if he has such exceptional propensities. She says that this orb is a ball of spirit energy, condensed to its very limits. The successor is examined by his own mind and body as to whether they are to be the true successor. If your body isn't up to the task of accepting this energy, which is like a small sun, then you will be torn apart! She also warns that the pain of succession is beyond imagination, and could go on for several days. If it doesn't go well, it's possible not to recover, or suffer a mental breakdown, or in the worse case, die. Yusuke says she doesn't have to tell him this -he openly welcomes this trial!
He takes the orb from her, and absorbs it into his body. His body briefly glows, but then it returns to normal.
Yusuke thinks that was nothing, but in reality it hasn't even begun. He suddenly feels funny, and then part of his forehead explodes, sending out a small stream of blood. More wounds appear all over his body, as blood squirts out of him.
Meanwhile, the semifinals are about to begin. They are to take place at a different, larger stadium, and the important spectators arrive at it via helicopters. They, along with some demon spectators, head inside. On the ring, the referee thanks them all for waiting. She says she'll be serving as the referee from these matches and onwards.
JURI
As she tells everyone what a pleasure this is, Koto announces that she's now going to be concentrating on only delivering play-by-play commentaries. Koenma has a new VIP box, and Jorge thinks this arena is incredible. From its outward appearance to the design on the inside, it's utterly eerie! Koenma says this stadium was finished this year, and without the sky being able to get in, he finds it a bit suffocating in here.
Juri says the first thing they'll do is introduce the four teams which have won their way to the semifinals: the best four! A large monitor opens up, first displaying the Gorenja team, then the Toguro team.
The Reverse Bedtime Stories team is next, then finally the Urameshi team appears. The crowd voice their displeasure at seeing the Urameshi team, whilst Juri says that the first match of the semifinals will be the Urameshi team versus the Reverse Bedtime Stories team.
The contestants enter the arena, but everyone notices that the Urameshi team is missing a few people. Jorge says that Yusuke and the masked fighter aren't there, but Koenma says it's to be expected. Yusuke is receiving his trial from Genkai, so he won't be coming back here any time soon. Jorge thinks the Urameshi team will be in trouble if there are only three members on the team, but Koenma says they'll just have to manage something. He just hopes Yusuke is alright.
Hiei says Yusuke and the masked fighter never came back after all, but Kuwabara thinks their opponents will be a walk in the park, even without Urameshi. Back in the cave, Yusuke is still in utter agony, but Genkai tells him he must endure this -endure the pain that appears to be ripping his body apart. If he doesn't, he can't become her successor.
Back at the hotel, Botan and the others have overslept. At the stadium, Koto says that the match will start in five minutes, and the excitement in the stadium has grown even higher. As the teams enter the ring, she wonders where Yusuke and the masked fighter are.
She asks if this means Hiei and Kurama will have to fight twice each, but Kuwabara yells at her -he can take all these guys on by himself! Shishiwakamaru thinks they're being looked lightly upon, and asks what happened to the other two. Kuwabara tells him they said he and the rest of his team were beneath them. Juri tells them to discuss how they want to fight, but Hiei says to just hurry and start things. Momotaro asks if he's fighting first, and Hiei says he'll fight first -and last. He can do this all by himself.
He says recently he's had a foul temper, and stress has been building up. As he says this, his bandaged right arm crackles with energy. Shishiwakamaru tells him not to get so upset, and says they can use these to determine the fights: dice. Each side of each dice has their names written on them. If "free choice" is rolled, you can freely choose your fighter. You can fight as many times as your name comes up -as long as you're still alive, that is.
Hiei is fine with that, and says if Yusuke or the masked fighter's names come up, he'll fight in their place. Juri announces the rules to the spectators, and Shishiwakamaru rolls the dice.
The first fight will be Makintaro versus Hiei. Hiei thinks his opponent's cheap tricks have backfired, whilst Makintaro tells Hiei he's just a runt who's all talk. Juri tells them to begin, and Hiei immediately makes a couple of swipes with his sword.
Kurama says that that's it for this match. Hiei is no longer moving, but a pool of liquid if forming under him. Makintaro asks him what the matter is -did he get scared and wet himself?
Hiei calls him a moron -hasn't he realized yet? Makintaro tells him to come and get it, but Hiei says he already has -and reveals that he sliced one of Makintaro's arms off with his first strikes. Makintaro finally realizes he's lost a limb, and staggers around the ring in agony. Koenma asks Jorge if he saw that, and Jorge says he didn't.
Hiei says that's enough, and walks off. He throws the arm over to Juri, who catches it before throwing it aside. Makintaro isn't done yet, and gets back up. He regenerates his arm, and turns it into a weapon:
MASAKARI KEN
(Demon Instigating-Hunt Fist)
Makintaro lunges at Hiei, who turns around just in time to seemingly get sliced in half. But it turns out he only hit Hiei's cloak.
Hiei says that was just an afterimage, and reveals he's on Makintaro's back. He stabs his sword through Makintaro's head, and he falls over dead.
Kuwabara thinks that was awesome, whilst Juri announces that Hiei is the winner. Hiei tells Shishiwakamaru to roll the dice, as he has a feeling his name is going to come up again.
In the cave, Yusuke's greatest trial continues. The semifinals go on without him, but will he be able to take the spirit wave orb?
