Synopsis

Butajiri gloats to Sakyo about his plan -with Hiei and the masked fighter declared unable to fight, the Urameshi team is finished. Sakyo doesn't bother responding. Meanwhile, the next fight is about to begin, with Kurama facing Toya. Before the fight begins, Kurama asks Toya why he and his team are fighting in this tournament. Toya says that they have lived in the shadows, in a world already in darkness. There's no such thing as even a glimmer of light. But they realized something: with the power they have as Demon Realm ninja, they could live in the outside world as much as they'd like. They will take the island the tournament is being held on as their prize, but it will serve no more as their point of departure, as in time, they themselves will become the light and envelop this world. The fight then starts, and Toya uses an ice projectile technique called ma teki sandan sha (magic flute sleet bullet shoot).

Kurama takes some hits, but is still able to move. However, with his demon energy still sealed away, he can't fight back. He tries smearing some of his own blood over the blood Gama spilt onto him, but this fails to make a difference. He ends up taking more hits, but still manages to stay standing. Worried that the effects of Gama's spell will wear off soon, Toya decides to fight at close quarters, and summons an ice shard over his hand. He goes on the attack and eventually manages to cut one of Kurama's arms.

He then moves in for the kill, but before he can strike again, Kurama pierces his body with one of his plant weapons. Kurama reveals that he planted one of his demon plant seeds inside his own body, and was able to combine it with the demon energy inside him to create a weapon. Toya tries to get back up, but is unable to, and Koto counts him out. Toya asks Kurama to kill him, but Kurama refuses, stating that he wants to know what Toya and the rest of his team are seeking so badly -he wants to know what comes after the light, what is it that could make them go through all of this. Kurama then passes out, but remains standing. Butajiri is furious that his plan has been ruined, and rushes off.

Yusuke says he'll fight next, but the next member of the opposing team, Bakken, is already on the ring, and says Kurama is still standing. An announcement from the tournament main office states that the next match will be Kurama versus Bakken. Bakken tells Koto the main office are saying she's not fit to be the referee, and tosses her off the ring. Bakken punches Kurama down and kicks him, so Koto starts her count. But Bakken picks Kurama up and says the match can continue, since Kurama is no longer down. He gives Kurama another good punch, as Yusuke screams for him to stop.

Manga differences

-When Butajiri talks to Sakyo, this marked his first appearance in the manga. However in the anime he appeared in the previous episode, in a scene which wasn't in the manga.

-Any scenes in this episode with Koenma and Jorge or Keiko and Shizuru, were not in the manga.

-The masked fighter's dialogue about the demon ninja was originally said by Hiei in the manga.

-Kurama does not attempt to use his rose whip in the manga.

-In the manga, when Toya covers his hand with an ice shard, he only tries to strike Kurama once (and Kurama stabs through him before he can). In the anime, he tries to cut him up multiple times, but Kurama keeps dodging his attacks.

-Kurama does not get his arm cut in the manga.

-The part where Butajiri thinks his plan has been ruined and runs off was not in the manga.
