Last time, Chun Li took Ken and Ryu to Tiger Balm Garden, where an action film was being shot by Hong Kong's newest martial arts star, Fei Long. Disappointed by his unworthy movie opponents, Fei Long chose to fight Ken as the cameras rolled. He was rewarded with the toughest fight of his life, and the most amazing battle ever recorded on film.

Ken says it's too bad they aren't going to leave that fight in the movie, as it'd make him a star. Ryu is personally glad it didn't work out, as if Ken was a star, they wouldn't be able to get his head through this tunnel! Ken asks Chun Li if her father is the main instructor at the dojo they're going to. Chun Li says her father is the main instructor and the owner, and nothing satisfies her dad quite like training others. She says that her father's dojo is one of Hong Kong's finest, and now that Fei Long is such a big star, everyone wants to train there. Ryu thinks he could take Fei Long, but Ken says he'd like to see him try... and fail. Chun Li says Fei Long still trains there frequently, so Ryu thinks he'll get a chance.

He starts to tell the driver to get them over to the dojo right away, but Ken pulls him back. He says they'll get to the dojo in a little while, and then says they haven't stopped fighting since they got here. He wants to do something a little different, and a little later, the group arrive at a large mall. Chun Li says it's one of the biggest in the world, and it's got some of the classiest shops you can imagine. She doesn't know what Ken wants to buy, but he's guaranteed to find it here. Ken says they aren't here to buy for him, he wants to get her something for putting up with them.

Ken asks Ryu if he needs anything, but Ryu says he doesn't like shopping. Ken is sure Chun Li is an expert, and she says he'd better believe it. The group are soon going around to a lot of different stores. As Chun Li starts buying things, Ken tells Ryu if he's bored, he has something that'll work out his arms: carrying the bags.

Chun Li tries on several different outfits, and buys a lot of them. Ken buys her a ring, and puts it on her finger.

As Chun Li drags Ken off to yet another store, Ryu heads off by himself, and takes a break. Personally, he'd rather be fighting ninjas. He then hears someone coughing, and sees an old man seemingly struggling to breathe.

Ryu asks him what's the matter. The man, Yo Senkai, says his heart has reminded him he's no longer young. Ryu says he'll call an ambulance, but Yo says he'd be most grateful if he could instead simply took him to a place where he could have some privacy. Ryu takes him out of the mall, and places him down on a bench. But Yo suddenly seems lifeless, so Ryu says he'll call an ambulance.

However, Yo suddenly jolts up, and is surrounded by a blue aura. He gathers the energy together between his hands, and then consumes it.

As he lowers his hands, he creates a blue flash of light. He tells Ryu he's off, and thanks him for his help. Ryu stops him and says he saw blue flame coming out of his body, that was insane! He saw a blue ball of light come out of his palms, and explode in his stomach.

Ryu says he may be stupid, but he's not blind. Inside the mall, Ken and Chun Li see their shopping bags left on the floor, but then see Ryu run in.

Ken suggests Ryu picks up some new threads himself, he's been wearing the same outfit ever since they first arrived in Hong Kong. Ryu asks him if he has something against his outfit, and Ken says he has no problem with it, provided he maintains a position upwind of him. Ryu says he's in the middle of something very important, and tells them he's going to bow out of the rest of the shopping. He'll meet up with them at the dojo later this afternoon, and runs off. Chun Li shouts directions to the dojo, and Ryu heads out of the mall. He goes to Yo's place. Yo is grateful for him walking with him back here to his shop, but Ryu says that meal was the best reward he could wish for.

Yo says he's an old man, and his heart beats not as invincibly as it did long ago. The doctor gives him pills, but he has his own cure. Ryu says it must be that magic he did earlier. Yo asks him if he has experience with the martial arts, and Ryu says you might say that. Yo says only the most skilled martial artist may behold the ki of the riding wave without years of practice. Ryu asks what that is, and Yo says it's the manifestation of one's inner most strength, something most people never see in their lifetime. Ryu asks Yo if he can learn his special technique. Yo decides to teach him, as his thanks for helping him today. He says they'll have to go in the back, as privacy is very important.

Yo takes Ryu to another room. Ryu notices all of the tapestries on the walls, and sees one that has a man holding a ball of blue light. Yo says that's his favorite tapestry, and Ryu asks him if man in the picture is him doing some of his magic. Yo laughs and says the man is Daruma, one of the seven Gods of Fortune. He explains that he was one of the great teachers, and the martial arts as they know them today were shaped by the influence of Daruma.

Daruma reached enlightenment in his secluded Shaolin temple, and wrote the two great sutras known as ekikin and senzui. The ekikin sutra is very important, as it helped form the basis of introductory martial arts techniques -doin-jutsu, also known as tono-hou, the technique of spiritual breathing -many people refer to this as kikou. Yo says that the universe is supported by a force called ki, which is spiritual power in its purest form. It's what gives life to their bodies. Genki, byouki and yuuki are their words for physical, health and illness and courage, and they all contain the word "ki". Kikou is a method where the ki may be controlled. Ryu asks if a person can learn this method if they apply themselves, and Yo says kikou is widely used in China as a method of maintaining one's health, but it makes a powerful weapon if one has the proper training.

As Ken and Chun Li head to the dojo, Ken says he's worried about Ryu, as what if he needs some help? Chun Li says she'll never forgive herself if he ended up in the hospital, or morgue. Ken says nobody could put his buddy in the hospital, even if they tried. Ryu may be a bit of a country bumpkin, but he's never met anyone who has handled themselves as well as Ryu. Chun Li says the way he speaks about Ryu, sometimes she thinks the two of them have a deeper connection than she realized. Ken asks what's she implying, but Chun Li tells him to relax. She meant that he and Ryu seem more like twins than friends, because they're inseparable.

Yo has Ryu go into a stance, and tells him to breathe naturally. He wants him to imagine his life force is resting in his abdomen, and states this stance has to be mastered. Ryu says it's hard to maintain this stance, but he's pretty sure he's got it down. Yo says that is fortunate, since this position must be held for 30 minutes! Ryu asks if he's kidding.

Yo tells him he has time, and it takes many months of practice to develop. He decides to show Ryu something, and goes into a stance of his own. He says to bend your knees slightly, then bring your arms up as if you're holding a ball. Hold your head upright, then let your ki flow into your arms. Once the technique of channeling your ki through your limbs has been learnt, it becomes an extension of your own body. Yo throws his arms out...

...and the wave blows out a candle. The candle then relits seconds later. Ryu asks what that was, and Yo says it was a power that is within all of them, but which few can control. It is the highest achievement a martial artist can hope to attain, the technique of body and soul working as one, each transcending the other. He thinks perhaps Ryu can master this method.

Ryu goes into a stance, and throws his arms out. But nothing happens to the candle's flame. Ryu laughs and says better luck next time, and tells Yo he appreciates the story and it was nice getting to know him, but he has to get going.

Yo says he's rarely met one with his ability, and would like him to visit again. He asks him to stay for a moment, whilst he gets something for him. He heads over to the wall, and takes down the tapestry of Daruma. Ryu asks why he would give him this gift. Yo says that someday, when the pride of youth within Ryu finally finds itself facing the puzzle of maturity, he'll seek answers, answers that are not found with knuckles. On that day, he should turn to Daruma for guidance. Ryu thanks him, and then realizes he doesn't even know Yo's name. Yo introduces himself, and tells Ryu to visit whenever he wishes.

Ryu heads off to the dojo via a taxi. Yo thinks Ryu may not be able to accept himself spiritually, but he hopes to be here when he does.

Ryu arrives at the dojo, and realizes Chun Li's home is a nice temple. He goes inside, and then finds several martial artists watching a fight. Chun Li sees him and says it took him long enough to get here. Ryu thinks she's wearing quite an outfit.

Chun Li says it's one of the outfits she got today, but then says she's up next. Ryu goes over to where Ken and Dorai are. Ryu says he at least made it in time to see what Chun Li has learnt from him. Dorai says he's taught his daughter martial arts since when she could walk.

The next match then begins, with Chun Li up against Lo Yang. Lo Yang tries a jumping attack, but Chun Li evades it, and then kicks him back.

Lo Yang tries a kick, only for Chun Li to block it, and hit him several times. She tries to hit him again, but he grabs her arm, and tries to throw her. But before he can, Chun Li does a somersault...

...and uses one of her legs to throw Lo Yang over her. The match over and Chun Li says she's won, but Dorai calls her careless. She asks what she did, so he tells her to look at her opponent. She realizes that when she threw him, she kicked him in the groin without even realizing it. Lo Yang says he just needs a little ice on it.

Later on, Ryu tells Dorai his dojo very impressive. Chun Li says her dad likes to encourage the use of various techniques, that's why his dojo is so famous. Dorai says that in China, the various martial arts disciplines are thought of as facets of a common art form. A well-balanced training programme will help you develop all of them, and each of the disciplines offers something the other does not. Ken asks Ryu what made him late. Ryu says it started when he met a strange old man in the shopping center. He seemed sick, but he began breathing and blue flames appeared around him, then he got better right after that.

Dorai asks if the guy said how he did it. Ryu says the man even tried to show him how to do it, and the man's name was Yo of the tea shop. When Dorai hears that name, he asks what Yo looked like. Ryu gives a description of Yo, and also mentions the tapestry he gave him. Dorai looks at it and says it was as he thought, and Ryu asks if Yo is someone important. Dorai says there's only one he knows of who goes by that name, the great master Yo Senkai.

Dorai explains that back in the days of the civil war, this part of the world was plunged into much turmoil. Civilians with martial arts training were assigned as body guards to military leaders, and one such bodyguard was master Yo Senkai. His skills became legendary, and many assassins were undone by his diligence.

Dorai says that when the war ended, Yo Senkai became a prolific teacher of everything he had mastered. Many modern senseis, including himself, can trace the disciplines they've learned directly back to Yo Senkai. Ryu says Yo never mentioned how important he was. Dorai says he'd been worried when he hadn't seen Yo at any of the recent gatherings for several weeks. Ryu explains that after Yo used this breathing technique called kikou, he seemed like he was perfectly fine. Dorai is surprised Yo did that in front of Ryu, as Yo is very modest about putting on displays -most masters are very private about these things. Ryu realizes all Yo wanted in the mall was privacy, and he also took him to the back of his shop when he used the technique.

Dorai says it's obvious master Yo believes Ryu was most worthy of training and personal tutelage -an offer like that is very rare. Ken says it's too bad he didn't run into Yo first, but Ryu says as if Ken had the right stuff. Chun Li asks Ryu that if he does get to know Yo better, she hopes he'll introduce him to her. Ken thinks if he beats Ryu, maybe Yo will take him on as his student instead.

Ryu and Ken are about to come to blows, but then Dorai's pager bleeps. Dorai says a vice squad captain's work is never done, especially in a city as big at this one. He excuses himself and leaves. As he goes, Chun Li says she has a bad feeling about this.
