Synopsis
Realizing they can still speak as long as they don't say the taboo word, Kurama explains to the others that Kaito has an exceptionally high IQ, and is a genius unlike any other seen at Meio academy. Kaito says he's still never been able to beat Kurama in any tests though. Kuwabara says it's so stuffy in this room, and Kaito explains it's because he's raising some tropical plants here. But he tells them there's some drinks in the refrigerator. Botan goes to get some and asks Kuwabara if he wants some orange juice. He says yeah -ought to put some ice in as well. After he says this, his soul is taken. Botan doesn't understand why -Kuwabara never said "hot"!
This slip up results in her soul being taken as well. It is explained that because of what Kuwabara said -"yeah, ought", the letters "h, ought" were together, resulting in "hot". Kurama has to think of a way to get his friend's souls back. Kaito now has three souls, and wonders about what would happen if he scratched one of them. Kurama tells him to go ahead and try, but if he does, he'll find a way to kill him. Kurama then reveals he took the key Yanagisawa had, as he was able to pick his pocket with a vine without Yana noticing.
Hiei suggests they change Kaito's taboo, which Kaito agrees with. As every minute passes, a letter they can use shall be removed, and in 45 minutes, they won't be able to say anything. If Kurama can get Kaito to break the taboo before then, he'll win. If he doesn't, he says Kaito can take his soul. Kaito agrees, and the game begins at 1 o'clock. The two start, and have to have conversations with each other using less and less letters. Kaito excuses himself and heads to the bathroom. He does it just to think things over -he knows that Kurama must be waiting to make a move at the very end, where they have next to no letters left to use. He then hears something outside and rushes back out, only to find Yana unconscious. He realizes Kurama must have used some kind of plant to put him to sleep, therefore not breaking the "no violence" rule of his territory.
He heads back into the main room and sees that it's now covered with plants, but the souls are still there. However, Kurama is now gone. He knows Kurama must still be in the room hiding somewhere, and decides to just wait in the center so he'll know which way Kurama is coming. Kurama drops down from above, and does a scream using the letters "wa!". This startles Kaito, but he manages to stop himself from screaming, knowing if he yelled out something like "kyaa!" he'd lose. He manages to keep himself under control, and turns around to face Kurama. He tells him he's won, but then sees the expression on Kurama's face. This causes him to laugh, and due to his ha has, he loses.
His soul is taken, whilst Hiei, Kuwabara and Botan's souls are restored, and they are returned to normal. Kuwabara is glad they've won, but shudders to think what would have happened had Kurama not been there. He also chews out Hiei for getting them into this mess in the first place, and for once, Hiei has no response for him. Kurama tells them that in a contest like this, thinking that you can win as long as you don't say the taboo word will psychologically make you lose. Nearby, Kido wonders what's going on down there, but Yusuke tells him that Kuwabara and the others will make it all the way here -no question about it. And when that happens, Kido should brace himself.
-The scenes with Koenma and Jorge in this episode weren't in the manga.
-In the manga you do not get to see the face Kurama pulls at all. The anime shows one of his eyes as he makes the face, but that's it.
-In the manga, Kuwabara doesn't chew Hiei out for his actions. Instead, it has Kuwabara asks Kurama exactly what he did to make Kaito laugh. Kurama tells him that's a secret.
