Synopsis

In the Spirit Realm, three criminals attack the Great Treasure Hall, stealing three items. Back in the Human Realm, Yusuke attends his first day at school since returning to life, but Iwamoto has it out for him. As Yusuke skips gym class, Iwamoto takes several items from other students, trying to pin the blame on Yusuke.

Iwamoto takes Yusuke aside and tries to rile him up enough to punch him, so he can get him expelled. As Yusuke goes to hit him, Koenma appears and freezes everything. He explains about what has happened, but helps Yusuke out of his situation first. Yusuke uses an item Botan gave to him -the Spirit Filtering Spectacles -to reveal Iwamoto has the missing items on him. Yusuke is off the hook but he still wants revenge, so Koenma instructs him on to use a new power he has: the spirit gun. Yusuke knocks Iwamoto down by blasting him, but Koenma warns him that he can currently only use the spirit gun once per day. He then explains about the three missing treasures: the Sword of Demonic Invocation, the Darkness Mirror and the Hungry Ghost Gem. He's counting on Yusuke to retrieve them.

Koenma returns to the Spirit Realm, where he is confronted by an angry Botan, who says the three criminals are too much for Yusuke to take on. Koenma tells her he had no choice, as one week from now his father shall return, and if the treasures are still missing, not only will they suffer, but the Human Realm shall as well. Yusuke is able to track down the three criminals -Kurama, Hiei and Gouki -by following a spirit of a child Gouki had taken by using the gem. Kurama and Hiei both leave, but Gouki stays. Yusuke initially knocks him down and gets him to release the child's spirit, but Gouki gets back up and transforms into his true form: a powerful ogre known as a spirit-sucking demon. Unable to use his spirit gun, Yusuke thinks he's going to get killed here!

Manga differences

-The episode's opening scene with the treasure hall being attacked isn't in the manga.

-The manga has a panel showing Atsuko at Yusuke's school, with two big guys next to her, "persuading" the school's principal to let Yusuke back in. This isn't in the anime.

-The scene where Yusuke overhears the two guys talking about him isn't in the manga.

-In the manga, Yusuke skips gym class but is in his gym clothes, whilst in the anime, he wears his regular school uniform.

-The flashback scene with Botan is shown to be taking place right after Sakamoto's defeat in the manga -Botan is still wearing her fortune teller disguise. In the anime this was changed so it happens during the middle of the night.

-Yusuke doesn't try to look at Botan with the Spirit Filtering Spectacles in the manga, as he does in the anime.

-The manga shows Iwamoto finding out that Yusuke is skipping class, and also shows him taking the items. The anime doesn't show this.

-Iwamoto also considers putting the items in Yusuke's bag, but then decides to destroy them in the manga. He then likes the look of the pen and keeps it for himself. In the anime this is missing, and he keeps all of the items in his pocket.

-Koenma does not freeze time in the manga, but he does in the anime.

-Iwamoto has some different dialogue in the manga for when Yusuke exposes him, such as trying to say Takai asked him to look after the pen. This was changed in the anime to him trying to blame it all on Yusuke.

-Koenma explains about the treasures being missing when he freezes time in the manga, but doesn't go into too much detail. In the anime, an entire short scene has him explain to Yusuke about each one.

-In the manga, Yusuke finds Kurama, Hiei and Gouki in the town, and starts to follow them. The anime changed this so he never finds them in the town, and is led to them by the spirit of the collapsed child.

-The manga does not have Hiei create a demon by slicing up a tree, like he does in the anime. The anime also adds the bright light that surrounds the area, something not present in the manga.

-In the manga, when Yusuke appears, Hiei leaves first, then Kurama. In the anime it's the other way around.

Notes

-When Yusuke enters the bad part of town, a tire can be see with the words "BAD YEAR" on it -a reference to Good Year.

Errors

-Atsuko is initially barefoot when she's first seen, but one shot later is suddenly wearing slippers.
