Yusuke Urameshi, having once died, overcame his trial in the Spirit Realm, and was permitted by Koenma to return to life. Botan, a messenger from the Spirit Realm, told him of his new mission: solve the cases involving malicious spirits in the Human Realm. Yusuke has been appointed as a Spirit Real detective!

The Three Phantoms!
Hiei, Kurama, Gouki

(Great Treasure Hall of the Spirit Realm)

An emergency alarm goes off as someone reports that three villains have broken into the treasure hall. One of them is beating up the guards, when another tells him to stop messing around, as there are people coming after them. They leave, and take the three grand treasure of darkness with them.

Meanwhile, Atsuko waits at her son's bedside, desperately trying to wake him up. He does so and she starts to cry, but he doesn't know why she keeps doing this. It's 6am, but she says she was worried he'd gone to sleep for good again. Yusuke thinks that since he's come back to life, his mom keeps doing this.

Later on, two guys are heading to school. One of them is showing off his fountain pen, which has a golden dragon wrapped around it. He tells his friend it was order-made, so there's none other like it in the world. They wonder that if Urameshi was still around, he'd want it, although with him he'd probably take it via force. Yusuke then says they're having fun, and wants to be friends with them, but the moment they see him they think he's a ghost, and run off in fear.

Keiko then appears and says nobody knows that Yusuke has actually returned to life. Yusuke thinks about how Keiko kissed him, but Keiko then asks him what he's staring at. He says nothing, as the two walk together into the school. They get a lot of funny looks from everyone, and most of them run off.

Keiko tells Yusuke everyone else has always been avoiding him since way back. Yusuke thinks he shouldn't have bothered coming back to life, just when Kuwabara places a hand on his shoulder and tells him he knows how he feels... because he'll send him back to hell right here!

Okubo asks if Kuwabara is going to thank Yusuke for helping get Eikichi back, but Kuwabara tells him to be quiet -he's got things to settle between them first! Yusuke says some things never change, just as Takenaka bashes him on the back of the head and tells him not to just stand there -he needs to hurry and get to his class.

Yusuke considers skipping school today, but Keiko tells him not to talk like a child. Kuwabara tells him it seems death isn't a cure for stupidity, as he and his friends head inside the school. Up above, Iwamoto has been watching, and compares Yusuke to a cockroach. There's no way he's going to accept a scumbag like him, and vows to drive Yusuke out of the school.

Yusuke's first class starts, but everyone notices he's not actually there. That's because he's decided to skip it, and is hiding out by himself. He takes out an object and thinks about where he got it from. Botan had called him out in the middle of the night. She says that she came to cheer him up, and has a present from Koenma:

REITOU MEGANE

(Spirit Filtering Spectacles)

She explains this is Spirit Detective item no. 1, and with this, he can see through walls, and find things that are hidden. Yusuke looks through it, but quickly gets swatted by Botan, who asks what is he looking at?! Yusuke says he didn't agree to go through this detective business, but Botan warns she'll go and ask Koenma to return him to the Spirit Ream. Yusuke sarcastically says she has a great personality, and whilst she thinks she has herself, she also warns him that using items like this will expend his spirit power, so he'll have to work at handling them one by one.

Back in the present, Yusuke decides to take a nap. Later on, Takai says that his precious item is gone -someone's taken his pen! It was right here up until gym class. Some of the other students find that some of their personal possessions are also missing.

Yusuke then walks in, saying what a great nap he's just had, but then sees that everyone is staring at him. He asks them what's the problem, as Keiko runs over to him and asks if they suspect Yusuke. Takai says Yusuke was the only one absent from gym class, so it's obvious. Iwamoto then walks in, asking what's wrong. He takes Yusuke to the staff room, and as Yusuke says it wasn't him, he punches him and tells him to not play ignorant.

Takenaka then walks over and asks if Iwamoto has any evidence that Yusuke did it. Iwamoto says when Yusuke was gone, they didn't even have one theft. He turns back to Yusuke and tells him that he heard that his mother cried rather disgracefully to get him readmitted to this school -maybe he got his bad behavior from her? Yusuke loses it and says that he can say whatever he likes about him, but how dare he...

...talk about his mom like that! He goes to hit Iwamoto, which is exactly what he wanted him to do -he'll get expelled for sure. But before Yusuke's punch can land, everything suddenly stops. Koenma pops out of nowhere and says a big case has just come up. The criminals who stole the great treasures of darkness from the Spirit Realm's treasure hall have escaped into the human world!

Yusuke's more bothered about him appearing here when he's already occupied, but Koenma tells him not to worry -the teachers here can't see or hear them. Yusuke says he hasn't got time for this right now, but Koenma tells him that's his line. He explains to Yusuke that if the three treasures are misused, the Human Realm will be in a terribly dangerous situation! He wants him to start acting as a spirit detective right now. Yusuke tells him he's got his own case to deal with -he needs to prove he wasn't involved with the thefts before he can leave here.

Koenma says the real culprit is right in front of him, and tells him to use the spectacle. Yusuke does so, and sees that the pen, along with several other items, is in Iwamoto's pocket. As things return to normal, Yusuke quickly rushes Iwamoto...

...and retrieves the pen. Takenaka wants to know what's going on, but Iwamoto still tries to blame Yusuke -he says he must have put it in his pocket. He tells him he'll expose his conduct one day, and leaves the room. Takenaka says he's not finished talking to him yet, and follows him.

Yusuke and Koenma head out, but Yusuke is still angry. Koenma tells him to start his investigation now, but Yusuke wants to go beat up Iwamoto. Koenma can't believe him, what would it prove if he hit a teacher? Yusuke tells him it's all because he wants some satisfaction. Koenma tells him to do it so Iwamoto doesn't see him, and he can do it now. He tells Yusuke to try to concentrate all of his feelings, like he was gathering all of the power in his body, into his right index finger tip. Yusuke stares at his finger.

After a few seconds, he says his finger is getting warm, as a blue light starts to emit from it. Koenma tells him to take aim and try shooting. He must try to picture it in his mind, and then pull the trigger. Yusuke aims at Iwamoto and fires...

...as the blasts hits Iwamoto in the back of head, flooring him. As Takenaka asks what happened, Koenma explains this is the spirit gun. Humans have a spirit energy within their bodies, called an aura. Yusuke has just concentrated that energy, and shot it out of his fingertip. The spirit gun has many times more force than a punch. But he warns him to be careful when using it -with his spirit power as it is now, he's limited to just one shot per day. The two then head to a different building, so Koenma can explain about the treasures.

KOUMA NO KEN

(Sword of Demonic Invocation)

"The Sword of Demonic Invocation, which turns all humans which are cut by it into demons."

ANKOKUKYOU

(Darkness Mirror)

"The Darkness Mirror, which releases it's magical power on the night of the full moon."

GAKI DAMA

(Hungry Ghost Gem)

"And the Hungry Ghost Gem, which draws in the spirits of mankind, with a special preference for children's spirits."

Koenma tells Yusuke these are the three treasures of darkness. If the treasures fell into the hands of an ordinary human, or a demon phantom possessing a human, they would be misused, and it'll be awful. Yusuke is the only one who can act in the Human Realm, and he must get all three of the treasures back as soon as possible. Yusuke says it looks like he has no choice. He's gone to the trouble of returning to life, so he ought to do something for the rest of the world. Koenma says he's counting on him.

Yusuke heads into town, but with so many people around, he wonders how to search for the criminals. He takes a break on a bench and decides to quit, as all these people are going to make his job impossible. But he then senses something, and a few seconds later, there's some commotion nearby. A child has suddenly collapsed, and nobody can tell what's wrong with him.

But Yusuke sees the child's spirit leave him, and remembers what Koenma said about the gem. As the spirit rises up into the air and starts to move, Yusuke says it looks like he'll find them sooner than he thought. He starts to chase after the spirit.

It soon leads him to a particularly bad part of town, but as he rounds a corner, the spirit is gone. He realizes one of the guys here must be one of the criminals, but which one? He concentrates and is able to see horns on one of the guy's heads.

He then uses the spectacle and finds that this guy also has the gem. The guy gets up and starts to walk off, but before Yusuke can follow, some of the others there stop him. They want him to give them some money, but Yusuke says he doesn't have time for this.

He quickly defeats them all, but has lost track of the demon. In the Spirit Realm, an ogre reports to Koenma about information they have on the three criminals. The first, Kurama, is someone with no previous convictions. He pops up everywhere and has many faces.

The second criminal is Hiei, who also has no previous convictions, but they no nothing else about him other than he's ruthless and will use any means to achieve his purpose. Finally there's Gouki, who has twelve previous convictions. He's a spirit-devouring ogre who has monstrous strength, and has already killed over a dozen men sent after him. Koenma says it's as he feared.

Botan then storms in, angrily asking what Koenma is dong. These three criminals all have great spirit power, Yusuke is no match for them -is he trying to kill Yusuke?! Koenma tells her that he intended to give Yusuke smaller cases to handle at first, so he could watch over him as his spirit power grew. But as far as this case goes, there's no time. Meanwhile, Yusuke leaves the town and enters a forest.

Back in the Spirit Realm, Botan says that surely Yusuke could have had a little training first, but Koenma tells her what kind of training could he have done in one week? Botan asks why does Yusuke only have one week to solve the case, and Koenma explains that one week from now, his father will be back from his business trip.

If King Enma finds out about the stolen treasures... it will be a lot more than just them getting yelled at by him. If King Enma gets angry, even the Human Realm will suffer. Major earthquakes, erupting volcanoes... perhaps even Mount Fuji would explode! This is why that in one week, for the sake of the Human Realm, Yusuke must get all of the treasures back -even if it kills him! He hopes that Yusuke might just have enough dormant power to do it. Botan says she understands, and tells him she'll rush back to inform Yusuke.

Meanwhile Yusuke is still on the search for Gouki, but can't find him. But he then sees a great shining light nearby. At the light, Hiei is using the sword, and slices apart a tree. This creates a small demon, which comes to life and flies off.

It exits the light and dies, but Hiei asks Gouki what does he think -with this blade, he could create a thousand beasts like that. Gouki thinks that's great, and he can see to feeding them with the gem.

Hiei says that once they use Kurama's mirror on the night of the full moon, the Human Realm will be within their grasp. But Kurama apologizes and asks that they let him back out. Hiei asks him what is this all about -is he quitting their gang? Kurama says that's exactly right. Hiei tells him he's become a coward since he's concealed himself in the Human Realm, and fell right into their ways. Gouki says they're not obliged to split up the treasure equally with a punk like him, and demands he hand the mirror over.

Kurama says he can't do that, as he needs it. Gouki says in that case, he'll take it by force, and goes to punch him. But before he can land his strike, Yusuke appears and asks if he can stand out of this rain with them for a bit. He wants them to hand over the three treasures...

... and then they can bicker between themselves all they want after that. Hiei asks who he is, and how does he know about the treasures? Yusuke says he's been waiting to use his line... he's spirit detective Lord Yusuke!

Hiei says he can't detect any spirit power from him, considering who he is, whilst Gouki thinks he could take him down with one blow. Kurama turns around and leaves, saying sorry, but he can't be captured just yet. As he disappears into the forest, Hiei says he's not done talking with him yet, and also vanishes.

Yusuke thinks he went to the trouble of dropping in on them, but Gouki says he has better manners than them. If Yusuke wants to take his treasure, then he can try taking it by force! He walks over to Yusuke and says that before they start, he'll have to wait until he's had his fill. He pulls out the gem and says it's quite convenient for him, as it draws in human spirits. He pulls out a spirit, as he tells Yusuke that human bodies are foul tasting. He has to finish quickly, or things get messy.

But with this gem, it settles things simply. Yusuke realizes that the spirit must be the one belonging to the child who collapsed earlier, and as Gouki places it in his mouth, Yusuke quickly attacks him, hitting in the stomach and then punching him in the face.

Gouki is floored, causing him to spit out the spirit and drop the gem. The spirit heads away, as the light vanishes, and Yusuke sees the spirit must be returning to that child. He picks up the gem and says there's two more to go.

But then Gouki suddenly appears behind him. He tells him he did pretty well for a human, but Yusuke tells him not to act big -the only thing he can do now is stand up, surely. Gouki proves otherwise by transforming to his true form.

KYUUKONKI

(Spirit-Sucking Demon)

"An ogre who likes nothing better than the spirits of humans. To extract the spirits, the ogre rips apart bodies of the humans he kills."

Yusuke thinks he's got to be kidding, but Gouki knocks him down with one swipe. He wonders how he's supposed to fight something like that, and curses Koenma.

Gouki rips a tree out of the ground and smacks Yusuke with it, causing him to drop the gem. He remembers about the spirit gun, but it's no good, his finger won't glow. He then realizes it's because he's already used the one shot he had today.

Gouki towers over Yusuke, and asks him if he knows what the most flavorful spices you can add to a spirit are. They are pain and terror. As he starts to laugh, Yusuke thinks he's going to get killed here!
