Yusuke Urameshi had died in a car accident. To come back to life again, he had to return the egg of a Spirit Realm beast, which feeds off the energy given off by human hearts. However, Yusuke used this energy in order to save Keiko, as she was enveloped in flames. However, Koenma accepted the action he took, forsaking his own life in order to rescue Keiko, and Yusuke came to be allowed to return to life.

Yusuke's Resurrection! A New Trial

Above the city, Yusuke grows restless, complaining that Koenma is making them wait so long. Botan explains that Koenma is a busy person, but Yusuke thinks he's a puny brat, who goes on so importantly with everything he says -at least he could keep his appointments! Just then Koenma suddenly appears, telling Yusuke that the "puny brat" bit was uncalled for. Yusuke is about to scream at him for making him jump, but Botan shuts him up and asks Koenma how soon can Yusuke return to his body? Koenma says that they have some urgent business to take care of regarding that.

He grabs Yusuke by the hand and zooms off with him back to where the Urameshi lives now. Atsuko is drinking, but everyone else is in the room where Yusuke's body is being kept. Yusuke wonders why they are here, are they letting him return to life right away? Koenma tells him to take it easy.

He explains that there are these things called wavelengths in his spirit and body. Unless those wavelengths match precisely, then he can't return him to life -and they will match tomorrow. Yusuke is initially happy, but Koenma tells him not to be pleased yet. In Yusuke's case, the wavelengths have a period far longer than regular humans, and if he misses tomorrow, his next chance is a long time away. Yusuke asks how long -a month? Koenma tells him it's 50 years!

He tells him he can't miss his chance tomorrow under any circumstances. And on top of that, he must also have some life energy blown into him by a living person. Yusuke asks how and Koenma tells him it's obvious -through the mouth! Yusuke can't believe it but Koenma asks why is he so surprised, such a thing is a common lifesaving practice. The clock strikes midnight, and Koenma does something which opens the pathways, so that power from the Spirit Realm can be transferred. In the morning, Yusuke's body will have a golden glow.

He then tells Yusuke that he must deliver a message into the dreams of 3 people, the 3 who would want him to return to life the most. Only 1 of the 3 needs to understand and act on his message within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, Atsuko sees that her bottle is empty already, and decides she should go out drinking instead. She tells Yusuke she's going out for a bit, and tells him to watch over the house.

As she leaves, Koenma says she was one of the ones he could have chosen. Yusuke says that it's no use, she'll be out drinking all night for 3 days straight! He asks who the other 2 are and Koenma says they're the people closest to him. Yusuke says one must be Keiko, which means the other one must be... a little later, Kuwabara wakes up screaming.

He complains about the terrible dream he just had. He was with Yusuke, then he held him, took him closer, and kissed... Kuwabara screams just thinking about it.

The next morning, Keiko sits beside Yusuke's bed. She notices that he's not glowing. The dream she has must have just been a dream, nothing more. She leaves and goes to school.

Nearby, Yusuke says Keiko left without noticing it. Koenma explains that the Spirit Realm power enters through the feet and gradually moves upwards, and his whole body won't glow until after noon. Yusuke says he can't rely on the other 2, and Keiko won't finish school until this evening. All he can do now is wait. At school, Keiko wanted to talk to Kuwabara about her dream, but he's not in classes today.

Takenaka then enters the room and tells Keiko to come at once -her mother has fallen ill. She goes to the hospital where her mom has been taken. The doctor tells Keiko and her father that fatigue, along with the cold, have weakened her considerably, but if she rests through the whole day, they won't need to worry. Mr. Yukimura suggests to Keiko that they leave, but Keiko says she'll stay until her mom wakes up.

Outside, Yusuke and Botan see what's happened. Botan thinks that if it's not a serious illness then Keiko should be looking after Yusuke, but he tells her that if her mom is down, she's not the kind to think of anyone else. Koenma then appears, who tells Yusuke that the power from Spirit Realm has now been completely filled into his body. All that remains now is the living energy.

Yusuke and Botan head to an arcade, where Kuwabara is playing a racing game. Yusuke says this is no time for games and begs for him to kiss him, but Kuwabara continues to play. Yusuke punches him and goes right through him, making Kuwabara feel one of his chills.

Yusuke knows Kuwabara felt his spirit energy and hopes he could figure it out... but Kuwabara says he's freezing and needs to go take a leak. As he runs off, Botan says it doesn't look like that worked, whilst Yusuke curses him out. He and Botan then head to a bar, where Yusuke starts shouting again...

...this time at his mom. As he screams at her about his situation, Atsuko's new friends tell her she can really hold her liquor. Atsuko tells them let's see how much she can drink, and demands another bottle. Yusuke hangs his head and says that this is no use.

Botan and Yusuke head back to the hospital so they can try and get Keiko to help, when Koenma suddenly appears. He asks what will they do, as it's now 11:45pm. Yusuke realizes they only have 15 minutes left, but Botan then gets an idea. She heads off to the hospital by herself, where Keiko is still waiting. Keiko sees how late it is...

...but is surprised to hear her mother suddenly start talking. She says Yusuke's name and tells Keiko to go to Yusuke's place -and to hurry, as there's no time. If she doesn't kiss him before midnight, Yusuke can't return to life. Keiko realizes her dream was real. Koenma tells Yusuke that there is only 5 minutes left, if she doesn't make it in time, what will he do? Yusuke tells him he can't make Keiko wait another 50 years, so he'll give her up, like a real man. But just then they both see that Keiko is running down the street below.

Botan comes back and says she talked to Keiko by communicating through her mother's spirit. Keiko heads inside the building and calls for the elevator, but it's clearly going to take too long, so she runs up the stairs.

Yusuke and the others watch, as Koenma says it's now 11:57. Keiko arrives at the door and fumbles around her bag for her key, but manages to find it and enters. She runs into Yusuke's room just as the clock strikes midnight.

She sees that Yusuke's body is glowing, and kisses him. She pleads with him to come back, but then notices that he's not glowing any more. Koenma thinks she didn't make it in time.

Keiko begins to cry, but then Yusuke opens his eyes, rises and says good morning. He's come back to life, and Botan says it looks like Keiko made it just in time. She tells Koenma that this case is now closed, but he asks her what is she talking about -the real trial begins now! It's going to be hard for Yusuke, and it won't even compare to what he went through when he was floating in the sky.

The next morning, Yusuke walks through the streets, thinking how great the air is and how great it is to be alive. Two guys then appear and ask him for some money -they've lost their wallets. All the money he has on him will be fine. But Yusuke is just pleased that they can see him, and talk to him.

He tells them that he can touch people, and have conversations... it sure is wonderful to be alive! As he walks off, one of the guys wants to go and punch him, but the other one stops him and says that picking on the crazy is asking for trouble. As Yusuke continues to walk, a voice calls out to him and asks if he has a moment.

Yusuke heads over to a fortune teller, who tells him he was born under a very unusual star. He's somewhat different from ordinary people. Yusuke agrees, whilst thinking how surprised she'd be if he told her he'd been a ghost until recently. The fortune teller says he has a remarkably great mission, but he starts to walk off. The fortune teller says she still has more to say...

...but Yusuke says sorry -he doesn't want anything to do with spirits or mysticism for a while. He decides to go for a cup of coffee instead, and as he heads towards a place, two guys come out and say that the guys in there are from Kasanegabuchi Middle School. They're apparently in there to stick it to Kuwabara from their school, and take over the whole area. They wish that Yusuke Urameshi was still alive.

Yusuke heads inside and notices the gang straight away. It seems they've been expanding their influence in his absence. He takes a seat and discreetly checks them out, and thinks the guy with glasses must be the boss. But then he sees that the guy has a couple of horns poking out of his head!

He hopes it's just his imagination. The gang start to talk about Kuwabara, and how he's late. The gang's leader, Sakamoto, tells them Kuwabara will do what he says, as he has a trump card. To prove it, he told Kuwabara and his friends to steal some manga books and bring them here.

Yusuke is listening and thinks that's stupid, Kuwabara would never shoplift or anything like that. However, Kuwabara and his buddies then walk in. Kuwabara demands to know where Eikichi is. Sakamoto tells him to relax, and if he brought what he promised. Kuwabara dumps a load of mangas onto the table, and demands for Eikichi to be returned.

However Sakamoto says he told him to steal these -so what's the meaning of this receipt? Kuwabara tells him it doesn't matter if he bought them or stole them, but Sakamoto says he wanted him to experience the thrill of shoplifting. As he hasn't kept his promise, he should apologize. Kuwabara's friends are about to start something, but Kuwabara stops them. He drops to his knees and apologizes for breaking the promise.

Yusuke can't believe it, is Kuwabara really going through all of this for this Eikichi guy? One of the gang members takes a kitten out of a bag and asks if she's really that important to him. Kuwabara yells out his beloved Eikichi's name.

He begs them not to do anything to her, as Sakamoto tells him that to enjoy life to the fullest, it's about how bad you can be. Evil always wins, after all. Another two members of Sakamoto's group say that on that note, Yusuke Urameshi was awfully wicked, and even they had trouble dealing with him. But then he went and got killed trying to save some kid. Sakamoto says who cares about some dead guy. He wants to have some fun outside, and has everyone go out.

He tells Kuwabara to beat up his own friends -they've been giving him truly detestable looks for a while now, so he's to beat them until he says it's enough. Kuwabara tells him that that's something he can absolutely not do. Sakamoto has one of his underlings smash a bottle and then threaten Eikichi with it. He warns Kuwabara to do it, or doesn't he care what happens to the cat?

Sawamura tells Kuwabara to go ahead and beat them, whilst Kirishima says once they get Eikichi back, they will pay them many times over. Okubo says they don't mind this, but Kuwabara still says he can't do it. Before anyone can do anything, the guy holding Eikichi suddenly gets punched in the face and knocked down. He drops the kitten, but someone catches her in time.

Everyone is shocked to find out the guy is Yusuke Urameshi! He says he's returned from Hell, and kicks one guy down.

Kuwabara and his friends quickly start fighting, but Yusuke gives Eikichi back to Kuwabara. Sakamoto sees that this gang are getting pulverized, and he decides to make a break for it.

Yusuke chases after him, and is led into a tunnel. Sakamoto trips and falls, but when he sees Yusuke, he attempts to run off again. Yusuke grabs him by the collar and hits him hard in the back.

Sakamoto falls, as Yusuke tells him that using an animal as a shield, and abandoning his friends... he's one unbelievable bastard! But he then sees something even more unbelievable -a small demon crawling out of Sakamoto's mouth! Yusuke wonders what it is, but the demon is surprised he can see him. He transforms into a streak of light, and attempts to get away...

...but is grabbed by Yusuke. The demon doesn't understand, as regular humans shouldn't be able to see him, and it should be utterly impossible for him to capture him. Yusuke thinks it's a strange little pinworm he's caught, causing the demon to be even more shocked that he can understand him. A voice then calls out that the demon is Jyaki, a wanted criminal with 5 previous convictions... in the Spirit Realm, that is. Yusuke sees it's the fortune teller he met earlier, who tells him that Jyaki takes hold of the evil part of a human's heart, and then influences people to take the wrong path.

Only those with a diseased soul are susceptible to being taken advantage of by Jyaki. For Yusuke to have been able to capture him before she even got to tell him what his mission was is quite surprising! He is clearly plenty qualified to become a Spirit Realm detective! Yusuke asks what one of those is, and she tells him it's the mission he's been given -a mission he must accept. Yusuke asks what the hell is going on, who is she, anyway? The fortune teller asks him if he can't remember...

...as she reveals she's Botan. She tells him that she's assistant detective Botan-chan. Yusuke asks what's going on, when he hears Koenma's voice. They head outside, and see an image of Koenma in the sky. Koenma tells Yusuke that once he returned him to life, that's where the real trial begins. Solving cases like this one, where the Spirit Realm is involved, will be the tasks he'll be given. Instructions from the Spirit Realm concerning his cases will be conveyed to him from Botan, his assistant.

He is to work as a spirit detective according to those instructions. Koenma then vanishes. Botan takes Jyaki and says he can leave this guy to her. She'll stick him in a safe and take him back to the Spirit Realm. As she heads up into the sky, she tells Yusuke he should be sure to eagerly fulfill his duties as a spirit detective from here on out. As she vanishes, Yusuke thinks that by returning to his body, it looks like things are going to get troublesome again...
