Synopsis

Botan tells Yusuke that Koenma is sending an investigator to see how he is doing. Sure enough, the investigator, Sayaka, appears. She explains that if the people around Yusuke aren't seriously delighted about him coming back to life, there's no real meaning for him to do so, and monitors Keiko for a while. After seeing what kind of person she is at school, they later see her cleaning up a bunch of trash at Yusuke's home (Atsuko has gone out). Keiko then leaves.

But not long after this, an arsonist sets fire to Yusuke's home. With trash still everywhere, it quickly catches fire and Yusuke's body is in danger of being destroyed. Keiko, having heard about the fire and where it is, runs back and bravely enters the house. She is able to get to Yusuke and tries to get out, only to find that the flames have spread and blocked off the exit. Sayaka tells Yusuke there is a way he can save Keiko: by throwing the Spirit Realm beast egg into the fire. Doing so will make it impossible for him to return to life. With no other options, Yusuke throws the egg, which causes the flames to part and let Keiko escape.

Kuwabara arrives and helps Keiko, and is shocked to discover that she has Yusuke's body. They head away, and Keiko explains to Kuwabara what's happening with Yusuke. Later on, Yusuke despairs over what's going to happen to him now, only for an image of Koenma to appear. Koenma tells him that he's much better than he thought, and has decided to return him to life. He reveals another egg, which he says he will keep with him. As his image disappears, Botan excitedly congratulates Yusuke and swings him around.

Manga differences

-Sayaka isn't a Spirit Realm investigator in the manga, she's from one of the manga exclusive stories (see the previous episode). In the anime they decided to feature her, but changed her back story so she's someone sent by Koenma.

-Sayaka develops a crush on Yusuke in the manga, and asks Botan and Yusuke who's prettier: her or Keiko. Yusuke says she is. This dialogue isn't in the anime.

-In the manga, Yusuke is seen trying to get the attention of a couple of other guys (one of whom is reading adult manga), but is unable to get their attention. This was cut out of the anime.

-The scene of Kuwabara beating up the Yusuke doll and then getting one of his chills isn't in the manga.

-In the manga, Keiko doesn't cover up Yusuke with anything as she tries to get out of the house with him, whilst in the anime, she covers him up with a blanket.

-In the manga, Koenma appears and he's the one who explains how Yusuke can save Keiko. The anime changed this so Sayaka explains it instead.

-The manga doesn't have Yusuke throw the egg into the fire like he does in the anime. Instead, Koenma uses some kind of magic spell to make the flames part.

-Kuwabara is wearing casual clothes in the manga, whilst in the anime he's wearing his school uniform.

-Kuwabara doesn't act surprised when he sees Yusuke in the manga -this is because he's already seen him before this, in one of the manga exclusive stories.

-The manga has Botan explain that Koenma's actions have cost Yusuke his virtue -all the goods deeds he's done so far. Yusuke says he doesn't care about that, he'd give that up for Keiko any time. The anime raised the stakes by making it so it would be impossible for Yusuke to return to life.

-Botan takes Sayaka away to heaven in the manga, where she decides she might ask Koenma out. Due to her back story differences this isn't featured in the anime.

-The scene with Atsuko talking to Keiko and Kuwabara isn't in the manga, instead, Keiko and Kuwabara talk to Shizuru (Kuwabara's sister). Shizuru will appear in the anime later on.

Notes

-The art style for this episode often makes the characters look very chibi-like, especially for the main cast. Things return to normal in the next episode.

-When Keiko first enters Yusuke's home, one of the magazines says "JUNP" on it, which is a reference to the magazine the manga was published in: Weekly Shonen Jump.

There are a couple of manga exclusive chapters set between this episode and the next one, which weren't adapted for the anime -click here for details.

Errors

-When Yusuke prepares to throw the egg, the egg is colored white instead of gold.
