One day, Yusuke Urameshi dies in a traffic accident, in order to save a child's life. Having become a ghost, Yusuke learns from Botan, his guide to the Spirit World, that there is a chance to be returned to life. At first, he has no interest, but after seeing his wake, he makes up his mind to undergo a trial to be resurrected.
Koenma of the Spirit World!
A Trial Toward Resurrection
Yusuke wants to know exactly where they are going, and Botan says it's the Other World. A place where there is a gentleman who can explain the trial for him to return to life. Yusuke wants to know who this person is, because if he's got something to say to him, he can come to him! Botan says this person is Lord Enma. Yusuke goes blue when he hears that name.
Botan warns Yusuke in advance that he mustn't be impolite in front of Lord Enma. He could end up not returning to life, and instead be sent to Hell. Yusuke wants to go back, but it's too late, as he and Botan arrive in the Spirit Realm.
They continue flying, and head over the Sanzu River. Botan then points out the place they are heading towards: the Gate of Judgment.
They land and Yusuke is amazed at the size of this place. The doors open and Yusuke sees how long the corridor is, but Botan moves in. As he follows her, he thinks about this Lord Enma... he doubts he could beat him in a fight.
He imagines Enma would grab him, but he then has an idea: he'll surprise him with a headbutt!
And then once he's stunned, he'll get around behind him and blind him! Then after that if he could squeeze his balls, it'd be perfect! Yusuke then crashes into Botan, who asks him what he's muttering about. He says nothing, as another set of doors start to open.
Inside the next room, they see two ogres looking ready to fight! But they aren't, instead they, along with many others, are rushing around like crazy. These ogres take care of the dying and the deceased.
As Botan and Yusuke enter, Yusuke thinks this is like a stock exchange. They head towards another room and as the doors open, Botan says she has brought Yusuke to Enma. Yusuke immediately looks around but can't see anyone.
However a voice calls out and he looks down to see Enma waving at him. Yusuke can't quite believe that this guy is Enma, as he thanks him for coming and then takes a seat.
Botan tells Yusuke to stop standing there and say hello, but instead Yusuke just starts laughing -is she joking? Botan says she's not lying, causing Yusuke to point and ask if this puny kid is Enma. Botan says not to point at him, but Yusuke just laughs even more -he can't believe he was scared of this guy! Enma explains that he is actually Enma the Great, Jr -or Koenma. And despite his appearance, he's been around 50 times longer than Yusuke is -so he'd better watch his mouth!
Yusuke thinks that no matter how you cut it, Koenma does not look older than him. Botan smacks him and tells him she said he has to be respectful! Koenma then says as he's seen, they're very busy here right now, so he'll get right to the point. He brings out the trial he is to undergo: an egg.
Koenma explains that this is an egg of a Spirit Realm beast. You don't even need to keep it warm, you just have to keep it with you at all times. He explains that the beast will grow by consuming the energy that is radiated from a human's heart. Depending on the energy of the person, the beast inside it will become an devil or angel. If his heart was to continue radiating evil power, he can expect a monster to come out of the egg. It would consume his spiritual body, and that would be the end of him -it'd be impossible for him to return to life.
Koenma says he'll keep Yusuke's heart beating, but the rest is up to his own soul. Yusuke nervously takes the egg, as he and Botan head back to the Human Realm. As Yusuke stares at the egg, Botan tells him this is no time to be loitering around -they must rescue his body by stopping the funeral. As it stands now, his body will be burned up!
Yusuke says that can't happen, as Botan tells him he can only come back to life so long as he has a body, after all. They fly off, but Yusuke suddenly stops. He asks Botan how is he supposed to tell anyone -is there any way for ghosts to speak with a regular human being?
Botan tells him there is -by appearing to them in their dreams. How it works is the dead person appears to them in a dream, and tells them any important things they need to know. They head over to Yusuke's place, only to find that his mother is awake and drunk, cursing her deceased son -according to her, people who get hit by cars don't usually die! She doesn't remember raising him to be so weak.
Yusuke sees that it's no use with her, which means he has no choice: he'll have to intrude in Keiko's dreams. They head to Keiko's home, and Yusuke is surprised at the state of Keiko's room -it's become all cute since the last time he was here. He thinks she seems to be sleeping well, until he notices her crying. She's dreaming about chasing Yusuke.
She then speaks in her sleep, asking Yusuke to wait. Yusuke says being upset is her own business, and his spirit has a matter to take care of in the Other World, but he's going to return soon enough. He gets into Keiko's dream and tells her to tell his mom that he'll be coming back to life -make sure they don't burn him up!
He says that's what he came here to say, and that he doesn't want to see that look on her face. Keiko suddenly wakes up and calls out Yusuke's name, but he's not there. She's sure he appeared in her dream... but was it a dream?
The next morning, Keiko heads over to Yusuke's place. She finds the door us unlocked and heads inside, where she finds Atsuko sleeping. She wakes up and says she had a dream about Yusuke... he was fighting ogres in the next world, and before long he became a leader of them -isn't that funny?! She asks Keiko if she had a dream about Yusuke, but she says she didn't.
Nearby, Yusuke and Botan are watching. Botan tells Yusuke that Keiko is thinking about his mother's feelings, and so doesn't want to say anything about her own dream. Yusuke says a dream isn't strong enough, so what should he do? At this rate, his body is going to be burned tomorrow! Botan starts flipping through pages of her notebook, as Yusuke whines that they can't wait for them to go to sleep again. Botan says there is one final method: this time, he will be able to speak directly to Keiko by controlling someone's body! There are some regulations though. It has to be someone close to him, who has the strongest spiritual sensitivity.
Yusuke wonders who that could possible be. Nearby, Kuwabara suddenly feels a shiver. Okubo wonders if it's cold, but Kuwabara says it's not that. Sawamura explains that Kuwabara has an uncommonly strong spiritual sensitivity.
Kuwabara says it's true. When he's assaulted by these chills, he sees the spirits of the dead, gets paralyzed, and then gets chased by nasty old women and stuff.
Yusuke and Botan are watching, when Kuwabara suddenly turns around and stares right at them. He turns back to his friends and says that right now, they're behind him. Sawamura asks if it's the old woman again, but Kuwabara says it's some low level animal ghost, like that of a monkey or racoon. Yusuke gets offended and tells Botan he'll never possess that wuss.
Botan says if he doesn't want to, that's fine. It just means his body will go sizzle, sizzle. Yusuke swallows his pride, as Botan does something to render Kuwabara comatose. She tells Yusuke he can go in, but he has a time limit of one hour -in other words, until sunset. Kuwabara's body won't be able to bear any more than that. If he misses this chance, he won't get another.
Yusuke flies down and takes control of Kuwabara's body. He's happy at how its worked...
...but says he can't stay here, and runs off. He heads to Keiko's home -which is actually a restaurant. He dashes inside and demands to know where Keiko is. She's not there, but her mother and father are. But they don't know who he is. Yusuke tries to explain that it's him: Yusuke!
Mr. Yukimura says Yusuke isn't an ugly punk like him, and he's not of this world any more, either. Mrs. Yukimura asks how can he say such things right before the funeral tomorrow?! Mr. Yukimura then gets even more annoyed, and doesn't want to take any vile jokes. He leaps over the counter and throws Yusuke out, telling him to never come back.
Yusuke checks the time and finds he's used up 15 minutes already. He starts desperately searching the streets for Keiko, when a group of guys confront him. One of them says he must be Kuwabara, but Yusuke tries to explain he may look like him, but he's not him. The guy doesn't know about what nonsense he's trying to say, but he's going to settle this now!
Yusuke tells him to get out of the way and uppercuts him, and then takes down another guy. The last guy standing punches him in the face.
Yusuke gets back up and batters him. Before collapsing, the guy says that was like getting punched by Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke runs off.
But as he heads into town, he gets surrounded by another group of guys, who want to pay him back for last time. Yusuke curses Kuwabara -he's been fighting everyone without any reason! He tells the gang he doesn't have time to play around with them, and starts beating them up.
Sometime later, Yusuke finally gets into town, but knows he's used up too much time. But he then sees a door open across the street, and two girls walk out -it's that pair who are always with Keiko! He heads over to them, and as they discuss how hard this must be on Keiko, he tries to talk...
...but the moment they see his battered face, they scream in terror and run off. Yusuke can't understand why they're running away!
He checks the time and now he's only got 10 minutes, at this rate he won't be able to explain everything to Keiko. But just then, Keiko walks out, looking for her friends. She walks right past him, but he can't decide what to say -how is he supposed to talk to her when he looks like this? He's out of time, isn't there any way she'll know it's him in just one shot?
Yusuke then thinks of something, and walks up right behind her, says her name, and then asks her to guess who -right before fondling her breasts. Keiko immediately turns around, screams at that idiot Yusuke, before slapping him across his face as hard as she can.
But she then realizes this guy isn't Yusuke! She wonders how she mistook him, but he explains that it really is him. Sure enough, her punches really do hit the hardest!
Keiko thinks it's like she's seeing double, but Yusuke tells her not to doubt now, just listen and believe him. Keiko says she believes, as he's the only one who would pull such a stupid stunt like that.
But besides that, the manner in the way he speaks, the gestures... it's the same Yusuke she's been watching for years. Yusuke tells her not to get weepy now, do that after he disappears! He didn't want to enter this guy's body, but he had to, and now he's out of time.
He tells Keiko that he will be coming back for sure -just believe him, and wait for him. Until he does, she must take care of his body for him. Keiko says she'll wait, she'll wait forever, before hugging him.
As the sun sets, Kuwabara regains control of his body. He's not sure what's going on, but then notices Keiko. He doesn't get this, but she sure is soft!
He hugs her tightly, but Keiko then slaps him, apologizes, then runs off. Kuwabara groans -what the hell happened?!
Keiko heads back to Yusuke's place, and bangs on the door. Atsuko answers and says that just now... she was going to pound on Yusuke one last time, but when she opened the coffin, she noticed that Yusuke's face had color in it, and his heart is beating!
As they hug each other, Botan tells Yusuke that his body is more or less saved now. Yusuke pulls out the egg, and notices that it is now glowing. He asks Botan if the things he did today were good things, but she's not sure... he did get into a lot of fights...
