Synopsis

The battle between Yomi and Shura begins. Shura begins with a strong assault of punches and kicks, but Yomi blocks them all, and counters with a couple of moves of his own. Shura is knocked down, and his father tells him to admit defeat. As he goes to help him up, Shura launches a surprise attack, unleashing a huge energy wave that causes a massive explosion. However, Yomi survives it without a scratch.

Yusuke and Hokushin, along with many others, are watching the fight. Koenma, Botan and Jorge go up to Yusuke to say hello, but he warns them to be careful around here -if any demonkin realize they're from the Spirit Realm, they'll be killed. Koenma promises to protect Botan and Jorge, only to reveal his plan is to stay at Yusuke's side. Back at the fight, Shura uses his ma en kou (biting demon circles) technique, but Yomi uses his ma koi ryu renpa: han shou heki (ancient envious demon style: distilling destruction opposing force wall) to absorb all of Shura's projectiles.

Shura can't find a way to find an opening, and Yomi beats him up. He again asks his son to admit defeat. Shura refuses, telling his father to kill him, as this was meant to be a serious fight. Yomi tells him not to be so high and mighty, as a rookie like him has no place using the words "serious fight". He clearly hasn't realized how much he'd held back his power whilst fighting him. He then tells Shura that he can have an easy death, if he wishes for one. He asks him for the last time to admit his defeat. Shura cries and tells his father he gives up. Koto announces that this means Yomi will be moving up from block 34 to the main competition, and all of the preliminaries have now concluded.

Afterwards, Yusuke talks to the remaining contestants, and says that, if possible, he would like nobody to die in the battles to come. He suggests that they all hold a tournament like this every few years, to decide who'll be the next leader of the Demon Realm -that is, if the winner of this tournament wants to have another one when the time comes. Yusuke says that he has a hunch that no matter who wins this, they can all relax. But for now, they'll get this thing started! The next battles will be one on one fights, and Yusuke is up first. He easily defeats his opponent, Nekotama, with a jump kick. Shura thinks Yusuke didn't use any tricks, and didn't have any strategy either. Yomi tells him he's right -Yusuke truly fights for the fun of it. He thinks to himself that he wanted Shura to fight Yusuke, rather than himself. The main competition of the Demon Realm Unification Tournament was underway. Whose head will it be that the goddess of victory smiles upon?

Manga differences

-In the manga, the fight between Yomi and Shura happens before Yusuke's prelim fight. In the anime, these fights are the other way round.

-The manga fight for Yomi and Shura is a lot shorter. The first time they're seen, Shura is already looking beaten up, and uses his demon circles move, which Yomi blocks with his wall technique. The two only use these moves once each in the manga, whilst in the anime, they use them twice.

-Kurama's scenes in this episode aren't in the manga.

-In the manga, Chu's group are not seen commenting on the Yomi/Shura fight.

-The fight between Yusuke and Nekotama is mostly not shown in the manga. Yusuke defeats his opponent with one move, and Nekotama is never actually properly seen.

-The part at the end, where Mukuro tells Hiei to not waste time with weak opponents, isn't in the manga.
