Synopsis
At an arena, lots are drawn to decide on the match ups. Yusuke finds out that the preliminaries will consist of groups of participants fighting it out in battle royale matches, with the last one standing being the winner. Mukuro then comes over, and reveals to everyone that she is a woman when she removes her bandages. She tells Yusuke to get as strong as she is, and to not lose to that man -referring to Yomi, who has appeared along with his son, Shura. Shura doesn't think much of Yusuke, and considers his father to be his real opponent. He tells his father not to hold back on him, should they find themselves facing each other. Yomi wishes Yusuke a good fight, and leaves.
Returning to commentate on the matches if Koto, who is also joined by Yuda. Every participant starts drawing lots, and get matched up in various blocks. Yusuke finds out that Chu's group are all in different blocks. However there is one surprise: Yomi and Shura are in the same block. The matches get underway, with Toya, Rinku, Jin, Suzuki and Shishiwakamaru winning all of their matches. Mukuro wins her match without even having to fight, as all of her opponents forfeit when they realize they have to fight her. Other winners include Hiei, Kurama and Shigure.
All of Raizen's old friends win their matches, but are holding back their true power -something Yomi and Mukuro are aware of. Chu beats almost every opponent he comes across, but is stopped in his tracks by Natsume, one of Raizen's friends. She is clearly on a different level to him, and after knocking him back, asks him if he wants to continue. He surrenders, but then surprises her by asking her to be his woman. Since she has no interest in weak men, Chu promises to get as strong as her in just one year.
Rinku calls Chu a disgrace, but then he meets Sasuga, who's potentially going to be his next opponent. He falls in love with her at first sight. Meanwhile, Yusuke easily wins his match, even after all of his opponents try to take him out first. Koto comments that most of the preliminary matches are going smoothly, but one has yet to be decided: block 34, the one that had Shura and Yomi in it. And so, a fierce father-son battle is about to get underway!
-In the manga, Koenma, Botan and Jorge do not appear during this story. They were added in for the anime.
-Koto does not appear in the manga for this tournament either, but she does in the anime. The manga has several different commentators, none of which are used in the anime.
-The tournament in the manga has a different rule: each fighter wears a collar, which has a number unlock code. Fighters must tell their codes when beaten, or if they are killed. When their collar is unlocked, they are eliminated from the tournament. This rule was dropped from the anime.
-Juri's cameo is not in the manga.
-In the manga, the first fight shown is Yomi versus Shura. The anime won't show this fight until the next episode.
-The anime adds a whole bunch of fights that aren't in the manga, such as showing Toya, Rinku, Suzuki and Shishiwakamaru winning their fights.
-Kokou is seen doing more fighting in the anime than she in the manga.
-In the manga, Chu wins his preliminary match. His next match is against Natsume, who he loses to. In the anime, this was changed so Natsume is one of the opponents in his preliminary fight, and he loses to her there.
-Because of the above change, in the manga, Chu loses to Natsume after Yusuke wins his preliminary fight. In the anime, these fights were swapped around.
-During this shot, Suzuki suddenly has bandages around his head, which he didn't have before.
