Synopsis

A group of Decepticons see a massive Autobot symbol on the surface of planet Antilla. They land there and see the city is deserted, but come across a holographic warning, telling them that if they're from Cybertron, they should leave. Megatron ignores this warning, as he and the rest of the group venture into a building and find a lightning bug -a powerful heat ray weapon. They take it and leave the planet, but are followed by as asteroid. Megatron destroys the asteroid with the lightning bug, but it explodes into many pieces, one of which strikes through Astrotrain and plunges into Megatron's chest. The Decepticons return to Earth, where Starscream pulls the piece out of Megatron. But they see that some kind of rust has infected Megatron, which quickly begins to spread.

Elsewhere, Perceptor attends an award ceremony for national scientific achievement. His winning invention, corrostop, is something the Autobots plan to use to cover all of the planet's monuments to preserve them forever. Megatron orders the Stunticons to capture Perceptor, so he can help find out what's wrong with him. The Stunticons do so and take him back to the Decepticon HQ, where Megatron's condition has worsened. Megatron promises peace if Perceptor helps him, so Perceptor looks him over and finds out he's been infected by a metallic plague. The chunk of asteroid that had hit him earlier was covered in cosmic rust germs, and the germs have been feeding off an alien energy source: the lightning bug. Perceptor suggests destroying the lightning bug now, but Megatron refuses.

Perceptor uses some corrostop on Megatron, which cures him of the cosmic rust. Megatron then goes back on his peace promises, and instead has Perceptor infected with the rust. He has him left out near the Autobot base with a bomb. The Autobots are informed and save Perceptor, but they become infected with cosmic rust. Unable to make any more corrostop due to there not being any more of the "ingredient X" needed to make it, Perceptor and Wheeljack instead get the matter duplicator working. Needing a sample of corrostop, the Autobots head to the Statue of Liberty, which had been coated with corrostop earlier.

The Decepticons find out about what the Autobots intend to do, and a battle takes place at the Statue of Liberty. The Stunticons transform into Menasor, but the Aerialbots, who haven't been infected by the cosmic rust, arrive and transform into Superion. Superion eventually defeats Menasor and then shoots the lightning bug, destroying it. Later on, Optimus Prime tells Perceptor he thinks they've seen the last of cosmic rust. And Bumblebee says they saved the lady at the same time. When Prime asks about the lady, Bumblebee points to that one: the Statue of Liberty.

-Spike, Carly and Sparkplug all make brief non-speaking cameos in this episode. This is the last time Sparkplug appears in the American Transformers series.

Errors

-Part of Astrotrain's head is colored gray instead of purple during this shot.
-Gears is colored like Rumble during this shot.
-Superion's left leg overlaps Menasor's left arm when the latter tackles him.
-Menasor has an Autobot insignia on his chest when he gets thrown by Superion.
