Sonya gets inside the base, and quickly finds Jax. He wakes up and says he thought he was supposed to be rescuing her, but she says she couldn't wait. She removes the sheet over him to reveal that he's done something to his arms: cybernetic strength enhancers. It takes when he has, and quadruples the muscle capacity.

Several warriors drop out of the portal, and enter the base. Sonya tries to unlock the clamps, whilst Jax asks what's going on. Sonya says the whole facility is going to be trashed by an extermination squad, which confuses Jax even more. Sonya tells him all he needs to know is that this squad is going to kill her, and probably him too. She can't get Jax free, so he tells her to stand back. He uses new arms to break the clamps apart.

They're about to leave, but then the doors get blown apart. Cyrax enters the room, and sends out two bombs which cause an explosion. He says death is the only way out.

Sonya and Jax notice some other warriors running in, so Jax says he'll take Cyrax. Sonya starts fighting Shao Kahn's warriors, whilst Jax finds out the hard way that Cyrax is a strong opponent.

Cyrax continues to beat up Jax, but Sonya is doing better against her opponents. Cyrax hits Jax back, and then goes towards Sonya.

He stands there and releases an energy net, but Sonya sees him doing it. She pushes one of Kahn's warriors into the way of the net.

The net reduces him to a skeleton, killing him. Jax then shoves a trolley at Cyrax, making him turn back around and resume fighting him.

Jax hits Cyrax into a wall, and then runs over and starts punching him some more, but he then gets his fist stuck into the wall. Sonya finishes off her last opponents...

...and then helps Jax. As she's doing this, Cyrax recovers, and fires out another energy net. But Jax blocks it with his arm, and the net doesn't do anything to it.

Sonya flips over Cyrax and throws him into some pipes, which crack open and cause a fire. She then picks up some chemicals from a broken container...

...and blows them over Cyrax. They catch fire and set him ablaze, and he is deactivated. She and Jax then see a symbol of a dragon on Cyrax, which seemingly comes to life and then disappears.

They then notice what appears to be a timer on Cyrax, and realize what's going to happen. They both quickly run out of the base, as Cyrax self destructs.

At Kahn's fortress, his generals are bragging to each other about how many souls their squads have taken. Motaro and Sheeva quickly get to the point where they're trying to kill each other, but Kahn then enters the room.

Rain reports that two of Earth's best warriors have already been taken: Kabal and Stryker. Kahn asks if he made them beg for their lives before he destroyed them, but Rain says he let them live. Before he can explain why he did this, Kahn yells he has no use for excuses, and hits the table with a hammer. He tells Rain this will never happen again, and as Rain repeats this, Kahn hits him with the hammer.

Rain lands in a fire pit, and is incinerated. Kahn says it is true: this will never happen again. He then says he needs a new general, and they can either die in duty, or by his hand. Motaro says his kind are known for their hunting prowess, and says he'll personally hunt down every human soul, sparing no one.

Sheeva says Motaro can't be trusted, but she, as the personal protector of Sindel, will follow Kahn's orders. Ermac says the energies Motaro and Sheeva waste with their sniveling, he'll use to capture souls for Kahn. Kahn says they're all far too impetuous for such important work.

He decides to make Sindel his new general, unless anyone else has a different point of view. The others say nothing, so Kahn leaves.

Meanwhile, Liu Kang has arrived at the Hopi Mesa, and tries to find Nightwolf. As day turns to night, he comes across what appears to be some sort of camp. But as he enters it, a wolf leaps towards him!

It knocks Liu down, but as he gets back up, the wolf changes into a human: Nightwolf. Nightwolf says that was pretty cool -that was his animality. He sees Rayden's prodigy and says he's seen better, but he's also seen worse. Liu tells him if he's Nightwolf, he must know about his victory in Mortal Kombat.

Nightwolf tells him not to get cocky, as the tournament had rules. But this time, anything goes. Liu thinks it was a mistake even coming here, but Nightwolf tells him he may think he's ready, but if he was, would Kitana have been captured? Liu asks him if he can help get her back.

Nightwolf says maybe. Kitana is important, but for Liu to beat Shao Kahn, he has to pass three tests. The first test is courage. Liu says he doesn't have time for these stupid games, but Nightwolf tells him to test his courage and find his animality, he has to put himself in a dream state. Liu asks how, and Nightwolf says there's a slow way, and a fast way. Liu says they don't have time for the slow way, and Nightwolf thought he'd say that. He pulls out a hatchet and strikes Liu with it.

Liu starts having visions, and sees Kitana. She says she had faith in him, but he failed her. He wonders if he'll fail everyone, and then sees Shang Tsung killing his brother. He then hears Nightwolf's voice, telling him to fight from the inside. It's the fire inside of him, and the everlasting faith in himself that can never be defeated. Liu then hears Shao Kahn, telling him that the fire that burns inside him is guilt. Nightwolf tells Liu to feel his animality.

Liu starts to undergo a change, but then hears Kahn telling him he'll fail. He wakes up, and the site is covered with snow. As he starts to get up, he sees a woman stood next to him.

She removes her cloak, and says he name is Jade. She says she's searched for him, and that of all the horrors darkness holds, to die alone is her worst fear. But with him, she is not afraid. Liu says this is almost too good to be true, and she says the same could be said about him. She starts kissing him, but he pushes her away. He says his heart belongs to another.

He says there isn't much time left. Jade gets up and hits him, and then spins around, changing her outfit. The snow suddenly vanishes, and was just an illusion.

Liu wonders if this was just another dream, but Jade then attacks him. She asks him how he thinks he can beat Shao Kahn when she alone is too much for him? He breaks free from her hold, so she throws her staff at him. He does a spinning jump to avoid it.

They continue fighting, but Liu eventually manages to throw her to the ground. She starts laughing, and Liu wonders what's going on. She says he is even more pure and faithful than she had heard, so he has passed this test.

Liu can't believe this was just another one of Nightwolf's crazy tests, as they could have killed each other! Jade says they live, and she'll now lead him to the temple of the elder gods. Liu says if this was just a test, it was only the second one, so he's not ready yet. Jade asks him if he's not ready to save Kitana, because she's the key to all of this. Jade says she can take him to where Kitana is being kept. She's alive for now, but for how long, she cannot say.

Kahn goes to where Kitana is being held. He says he can forgive her for all of her past betrayals, and tells her to accept this drink as an offering -he does not want her death. She takes the cup and drinks from it...

...but then spits it back over Kahn's face. He says she is sorely testing his patience, but she reminds him that he destroyed her family, and drove her mother to kill herself. She is his enemy forever, so he should kill her now, if he dares. Kahn calls her a foolish child, as a struggling worm on a hook lands a bigger catch then a dead one. He has Kitana's cell lifted back up.

Sonya and Jax are trying to head towards the temple, and Jax notices how all of the trees and animals seem to have disappeared. Sonya says that the realms have almost merged, but Jax just doesn't understand what she is going on about. She says she can't explain, so he'll just have to use his imagination. Jax gets irritated, and says if she keeps talking like that to him, he's going to split. She's dragged him out of the base with some lunatic killers coming after them, then she put him in a spinning ball which took them halfway around the world. If he's going to die today, she could at least tell him why! Sonya just says nobody told her why Johnny had to die. Jax wonders who Johnny is.

As Sonya walks off, Jax says he's her partner, and if she can't trust him, who can she trust? Sonya says obviously nobody but herself. Jax says he was there every time she needed him, now he's stuck in the middle of nowhere because of her. Sonya decides to split up for a while, and goes off in a separate direction. As she comes across a statue of a dragon, she soon finds herself under attack from the ninja assassin, Mileena!
