Mortal Kombat is not about death, but rather the preservation of life. Liu Kang and a few chosen fighters from the Earth realm defeated Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung. According to the rules of Mortal Kombat, their victory preserved the safety of the Earth for one more generation. Our chosen ones were returned to Liu Kang's home on Earth, only to enjoy a brief period of peace... for someone from Outworld has a different point of view.

The skies above the temple darken, and then some of the structure get blown apart. Several warriors seemingly fall from the sky, causing all the monks to flee.

Four more fighters -Ermac, Motaro, Sheeva and Rain -drop down, followed by the emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn.

Shao Kahn says that the Earth was created in six days, so too shall it be destroyed! And on the seventh day, mankind will rest in peace. Liu Kang, Kitana, Sonya, Johnny and Rayden wonder what's going on. Kitana says somehow Kahn has opened gateways to Earth, but Liu says he thought their victory in Mortal Kombat closed those portals. Rayden says what closes can also open again.

Another person then appears: Sindel, Kitana's mother. Kitana is surprised to see that her mother is alive, but Sindel tells her it's too bad that she... will die!

Rayden and Kahn leap towards each other. Rayden says as long as he has the power, he won't let Kahn rule this world. Kahn tells him as long as the portal remains open, this world becomes his. He charges into Rayden...

...which sends him crashing through a wall. He gets back up and flies over, pushing Kahn way back.

They keep fighting, but it appears Rayden has the upper hand. As he gets knocked down again, one of his minions throws him a whip.

He uses this to get Sonya, and drag her over to where he is. He says this ends now, and Rayden asks if he's hiding behind a human. Kahn says why not, and accuses Rayden of hiding behind them for his entire pathetic life. Johnny does a jumping shadow kick, but Kahn batters him aside.

He tells Rayden to surrender, or Johnny will die. Rayden surrounds Kahn's generals with lightning, and says he'll take their lives, as Earth does not bend to the will of tyrants. Kahn knows he'd never let one of his precious humans die. Rayden asks him to trade his generals for Johnny, but Kahn tells him to come and bow at his feet.

Rayden stops his lightning powers, but as soon as he does, Kahn calls him a fool, and then kills Johnny by snapping his neck. Kahn then throws out a projectile at Rayden...

...which sends him crashing through another wall. As Sonya cries over Johnny, Kahn announces that in six days, they'll all bow to him -it has begun!

He and his generals then disappear, whilst a structure rises out of the ground, moving Johnny's body up with it. Kahn's warriors then charge towards Liu and the others.

Rayden says this isn't a fight they can win here, and leads everyone away. As they head down into one of the temples, Rayden uses his powers to blow apart a corridor, stopping anyone from following them. He says that Kahn has opened the portal, and the Earth and Outworld have begun to merge into one realm. He says to think of it as hell on Earth. Kitana still can't believe her mother was resurrected, and asks how it's possible. Rayden thinks Sindel is the key to all of this.

Liu is frustrated at how this has happened, as they won the tournament -the rules say that Earth is safe for another generation! Rayden says Kahn has cheated, and has broken the rules. He believes that Kahn resurrected Sindel to keep the portals open indefinitely. By reuniting Kitana with her mother, Kahn's spell will be broken, and Sindel's soul will be at peace. This will close Kahn's portals. Kitana asks how the elder gods could allow this, but Rayden says he doesn't know. He does know that Kahn must be stopped, or their world will perish, and they have six days until annihilation. Liu says he beat Shang Tsung, and believes he can beat Kahn. But Rayden warns him he's no match for Kahn. Sonya comes over and says that if anyone is going to kill Kahn, it's going to be her.

Rayden says enough, and blows apart a wall. He says they're far from ready, and Kahn's extermination squads will be everywhere, hunting for them. He's telling them this for their own good: he has no powers in Outworld, something Kahn knows. As the two realms merge, he'll lose his powers here on Earth. He tells them to grow stronger, as together, they are the only hope. The group head to some things known as velospheres. Kitana says with these, you can travel anywhere on Earth in mere hours. The inner winds propel you, and you move so fast it'll be as if you aren't moving at all. Rayden says he'll take Sonya to find her partner, Jax.

Sonya says forget it -if she dies, fine, but she's not losing anybody else. Rayden says that alone, she's vulnerable, but if they work together as a team, they can do much. He then tells Liu and Kitana to travel to the Hopi Mesa, as Liu will need help for what he's about to face. He tells him to go deep into the night, and seek the counsel of the one called Nightwolf. He then says he will speak with the elder gods, and demand answers for what Shao Kahn has done.

He and Sonya then head off in a velosphere. Liu and Kitana board another, and move out. Liu thinks it's amazing, and Kitana explains the velosphere moves via the hot air rising from the Earth's core.

In Outworld, Shao Kahn receives a visit from his father, Shinnok. Kahn tells him that the merger has begun, and the Earth is under attack -it. Is. GLORIOUS! Shinnok asks if he made Rayden beg for his life before destroying him. Kahn jumps down and says Rayden is of no concern to them, but Shinnok is furious that he let Rayden live. Kahn says Rayden could not be stopped.

Shinnok says he has no use for excuses, as he has broken the sacred rules to keep the portals open. If the elder gods learn of their plot, they shall both suffer the consequences. Kahn doesn't understand how his father could fear the elder gods. Shinnok says that will control of the Earth realm, their power will be absolute. Until the sixth day has passed, they can take no chances with Rayden and his mortals. He tells his son to not underestimate the power of the human spirit.

Meanwhile, Liu and Kitana have come to the end of their journey in the velosphere. Kitana is about to tell Liu about what she wants him to do if anything happens to her, but he stops her. He says he's lost everything, and he's not going to lose her. The two are about to kiss, but then a cyborg ninja appears behind them: Smoke!

Smoke kicks Kitana away and then starts fighting Liu. Some of Kahn's warriors appear and start fighting Kitana, whilst Liu struggles in combat with Smoke.

Kitana pulls out some weapons and starts slicing up her opponents with then, revealing that her blades are fans. Nearby, Smoke fires a missile at Liu, which he jumps out of the way of.

As he lands, Smoke is instantly upon him again, and batters him around. But then out of nowhere, Sub-Zero leaps in, and freezes Smoke with an icy blast.

He does this just as Smoke is preparing to fire another missile, so Liu gives him a kick which knocks him back. Smoke explodes seconds later.

Sub-Zero tells them that they must go, as there will be others. Liu says he killed him at the tournament, but Sub-Zero removes his mask, and says the other Sub-Zero was his older brother. Liu wants to know why he helped them. Sub-Zero says he helped Kitana, as legend has it that the princess is the key to stopping Kahn's plot. Kitana asks why he followed them, and he says that two days ago, Kahn reprogrammed Smoke to come after her instead of him, in order to keep her apart from queen Sindel. Liu asks how they get to Nightwolf, and Kitana tells Sub-Zero that they have a common enemy. She says he must help them with his powers, if he wants to stop Kahn.

Sub-Zero hopes they will succeed, and then uses an icy blast to create a new bridge across the gap. As he starts to walk across it, some ropes appears on one side...

...as Scorpion pulls himself up! He tells Sub-Zero to get over here, and throws two spears at him. Sub-Zero creates an ice clone of himself, which the spears hit and destroy.

The two start fighting, and after hitting the ground a couple of times, the ice bridge cracks, and Scorpion falls down a level.

Sub-Zero follows him, and the two continue fighting. They eventually get back up to where they just were, but then Scorpion manages to knock Sub-Zero off...

...putting him in danger of falling into the lava below. Liu leaps across the gap, but as he does so, Scorpion teleports. Liu gets to where Sub-Zero is.

He helps Sub-Zero up, but Scorpion reappears behind Kitana, and grabs her. He then teleports with her, and they both disappear.

Liu says he must find Kitana, but Sub-Zero says Kahn would want him to go after her -so he shouldn't. Liu says without Kitana, it's over, they've lost. Sub-Zero tells him that what's happened proves he isn't ready for what's ahead. Liu turns around, but when he turns back, Sub-Zero is gone.

Meanwhile, Sonya and Rayden arrive at a base, but see it has been attacked. Sonya asks if it's like this everywhere, and Rayden says with each hour, the merger of the realms grows closer. As Sonya runs towards the base, a portal opens up above it. Rayden says he'll meet her at the temple of the elder gods.
