The team fight and defeat an invading army of Shokan warriors. Jax has decided to quit the team, as his grandfather recently passed away and he wasn't even aware until after the funeral. Sonya is the most upset by this, but there is then another alert, as Nightwolf finds another rip. As most of the team head off, Rayden tells Nightwolf that he probably won't be coming back. Rayden appears and tries to convince Jax to stay, but Jax says he has to go, he's no good to the team if his heart isn't in it.

Jax heads to his grandfather's cabin, where he stays with Ruby, a woman who was looking after his grandfather. However, Ruby is one of Shao Kahn's spies. Shao Kahn tells Ermac to prepare his ninja forces to attack. Meanwhile, Nightwolf has secretly being keeping tabs on Jax just in case he ever had to find him. Sonya is not happy that Jax is with Ruby, but they then see that Jax is attacked by Ermac and his ninjas. Ruby reveals she's working with the bad guys, and knocks Jax out. They then all head to Hinpar, which is Ruby's realm.

There, Shao Kahn attempts to get Jax to reveal where his secret headquarters are. The Defenders of the Realm head to Hinpar, where Ermac and his ninjas attack them. One group stays behind to fight them, whilst Kitana, Sonya and Stryker head to a castle to find Jax. They quickly locate and free him, but Shao Kahn and several Cybers then appear.

Kitana faces Ruby, her former friend who betrayed her in the past. The group attempt to leave, but Shao Kahn has more Cybers enter and orders them to attack. But Ruby pulls down a switch which opens up a trapdoor, that the group all fall down. Ruby then also jumps down after them, escaping from Shao Kahn and the remaining Cybers.

Ruby gets the group out of the castle and says she has now realized the error of her ways. Jax tells her to come with them, but she says she must stay here and join her people in trying to overturn Kahn. Sonya tells Jax he's coming with her -now! The team return to their dragon jets, which take off and head back through a portal, returning to Earthrealm. There, Jax tells Sonya that if he didn't know the truth about Shao Kahn, he'd probably split right now. But he's seen firsthand what Kahn would do if he ever took over Earth. Being on the team is part of who he is, and it's his duty. He tells Sonya not to worry, as he'll stay and fight until the end. Sonya says that's a relief, as she wouldn't know what to do without him.

Notes

-This episode has a couple of background oddities in it:

Incorrect	Fixed

On the UK DVDs I have, for some inexplicable reason, the wrong background is used in two shots -one early on in the episode around 4 minutes 33 seconds in, then again at around the 8 minutes 33 seconds mark. Stranger still, this error was corrected in certain versions of the episode -the corrected images above were from the French version. I don't know if the episode aired with these errors or not.

-In the games, Ermac is actually many souls formed into one being, and the character refers to himself as "us". For the cartoon, he seems to just be a single man.

-Ruby is a new character who was not in the games. However, she's basically Jade. Why the show didn't just use Jade instead remains a mystery -she was mentioned in the show's production bible.

-The Cybers have a different design in this episode, and look a little more menacing than they did before.

Errors

-When Sonya kisses Jax, her glove is missing from her hand during this closeup shot. She was wearing it the shot before this.
-Rayden says he can't help the team because his powers don't work in Outworld. But the place the team are going is not Outworld, it's another realm called Hinpar.
