Synopsis

The day before the anniversary of her father's death, Kitana meets Asgaarth, her father's most esteemed knight. They two are planning an attack on Shao Kahn, hoping to overthrow him and for Kitana to reclaim her throne in Outworld. Liu is unhappy that they've teamed up with Sheeva and the Shokan, but Sheeva claims to not be taking orders from Shao Kahn any more. On Earth, the team are also ready to help out, despite Rayden's objections.

Kitana's group plan their attack, but are attacked by some Cybers. Sheeva and the Shokan helps them destroy the Cybers, proving their loyalty. However, Sheeva is actually Shang Tsung is disguise, who reports to Shao Kahn about Kitana's plans. Shang asks why the real Sheeva wasn't sent, but Kahn explains he considers her too stupid to convince Kitana of her loyalty herself. On Earth, Rayden is still against the plan, but most of the team head to Outworld.

Kitana's group assault the Black Tower, only for Kahn to be ready for them, along with Ermac, his ninjas and a group of Cybers. The Defenders arrive to help out, as Liu is able to get the main gate open, allowing the rest of Kitana's forces inside the castle. Kitana tells Kahn he's finished, but he points out Sheeva and the Shokan. However they see two Sheevas, as one of them morphs into Shang Tsung. Shang reveals that the Shokan are now on his side, having told Sheeva about Kahn's remark about her being stupid. Shang attacks Kahn, but some Shadow Priests teleport him away.

Shang declares himself the new emperor and intends to rule Earthrealm, but Rayden then appears along with Motaro, the Centaurs and the Nomad. Rayden brought them here because he knew these factions wouldn't be happy with Shang being the emperor. Kitana convinces Motaro about how much worse Outworld would be with Shang in charge of it, and asks if the Centaurs and Nomad are willing to bow to Shang and the Shokan. Motaro says never, and orders his forces to attack. As the factions begin fighting each other, Rayden creates a portal which most of the team go through to return to the Earthrealm. Asgaarth tells Kitana they've failed, but Kitana says that one day Outworld will return to Edenia. Liu says he's sorry things didn't work out for Kitana, but he is relieved he won't be losing her. Kitana says he'll never lose her, as the two hold hands and head through the portal, followed by Rayden.

Notes

-The animation quality of this episode is of a higher standard than any other episode in the series.

-This is the last episode. It seems clear a second season was planned, as so much is left unresolved at the end of this episode, but this never happened.

-Asgaarth is voiced by John Rhys-Davies, who played Sallah in the Indiana Jones movies and Gimli in the Lord of the Rings.

-This episode has an actual fatality in it -Sub-Zero is shown freezing and then punching a Nomad so hard he shatters.

Errors

-During this shot, the wrong background is used -Asgaarth is meant to be in the tomb with Kitana, not outside.
-When Sonya says Earth will finally be safe, her gloves are missing.
-When Liu moves down the rope, his headband is missing.
-Ermac initially doesn't have his mask on when he attacks Liu, but then he suddenly is wearing it.
-When Shang says the throne of Outworld is his, part of his hair overlaps one of Sheeva's arms.
-During this shot, Kitana's arm overlaps Motaro.
