Synopsis
Jotaro's group come across a man, D'Arby, who claims to know where Dio is. Joseph tries paying him, but D'Arby is more interested in making a bet. He throws out two pieces of beef jerky, and wants to bet on which piece a nearby cat will take first. Annoyed, Polnareff takes him up on the bet, but the cat takes the piece D'Arby bet on. Polnareff loses, and D'Arby takes his soul as payment! D'Arby is a Stand user, and his Stand, Osiris, can take a person's soul. D'Arby reveals that the cat belonged to him.
D'Arby also reveals he's a gambler, and has taken the souls of many people. They can get Polnareff's soul back by defeating him in a game, so Joseph challenges him next. The game they play involves dropping coins into a glass full of liquor, and whoever makes it spill first loses. The game begins, and both players deposit coins. Despite Joseph cheating by squeezing more liquid into the glass via a small sponge, D'Arby is still able to place another coin into the glass.
Joseph doesn't understand how D'Arby was able to do it, as he'd rigged it so it would spill on the last coin. He tries to place another coin in, but upon realizing he can't do it, Osiris appears and takes his soul. Jotaro checks the glass, and sees a piece of melted chocolate on the bottom of it. He realizes that when D'Arby inspected the glass earlier, he placed a piece of chocolate on it, and then waited. This caused the glass to tilt slightly, so when the time was right, he got up and moved out of the way, letting the sun shine down and melt the chocolate. This allowed him to place another coin in. Jotaro decides to take on D'Arby next in a game of poker. D'Arby starts dealing, but when he tries to cheat with a second deal, Jotaro has Star Platinum snap one of his fingers.
A kid is brought over to deal instead, but Jotaro and Avdol don't know that he works for D'Arby. The game begins, but D'Arby has a better hand, and wins several chips representing the souls of Polnareff and Joseph. The next game starts, but Jotaro does something odd: he doesn't bother looking at his cards, and just says they'll do. The kid is certain he dealt Jotaro a ragged hand, just as D'Arby had previously instructed him to do.
D'Arby thinks Jotaro is bluffing, and raises the stakes by betting more chips, including all of those representing Polnareff and Joseph. Avdol thinks Jotaro hasn't got enough chips to bet with, but D'Arby says Jotaro can write a note and bet with Kakyoin's soul. D'Arby hopes this will freak Jotaro out, but it doesn't. Jotaro says he'll bet Kakyoin's soul, and D'Arby notices he suddenly has a cigarette. He didn't see him get it, but he briefly saw Star Platinum seemingly light it. D'Arby begins to worry that Star Platinum has switched Jotaro's cards without him noticing. He's certain he's got a better hand, and is about to get Jotaro reveal his hand when Jotaro says he'll raise the bet again, this time betting on his mother's soul. He wants D'Arby to offer something equal to that, and says he must reveal the secret of Dio's Stand. D'Arby's confidence further plummets when he sees that Jotaro suddenly has a drink he didn't have seconds ago, making him believe Jotaro has been able to switch his cards. He attempts to speak...
...but passes out due to the tension, and is defeated. Everyone sees that D'Arby had a really good hand, whilst Jotaro's was ragged! Jotaro says his plan was to get D'Arby scared enough into folding, and he didn't want to look at his own cards because it would have freaked him out if he knew they were ragged. Polnareff and Joseph's souls are released, as are the souls of everyone else D'Arby had taken. D'Arby reveals the location of Dio's mansion, but starts screaming when asked about the secret of Dio's Stand. Jotaro still thinks D'Arby was a formidable enemy, as he tried to defeat all four of them by himself.
