Synopsis
Jotaro Kujo wakes up for a dream he keeps having. He's locked himself in a jail cell, wanting to understand the true nature of the evil spirit which haunts him. His grandfather, Joseph Joestar, arrives at the police station, having been summoned by his daughter, Holy. Joseph wants him to leave the cell, but Jotaro refuses, and has his spirit take a guard's gun. He tries to shoot himself in the head with it, but the spirit catches the bullet.
Realizing he won't be able to convince his grandson with words alone, Joseph beckons Avdol to get Jotaro out of the cell. Avdol reveals he also has a "spirit", which Joseph says is what they actually call a "Stand". Avdol's Stand, Magician's Red, attacks Jotaro, but Jotaro then brings out his own Stand. His Stand repels Magician's Red, and then prizes open the cell bars.
Jotaro steps out of the cell, but Avdol stands down and says he's done what Joseph asked. The group return to the Kujo residence, and Joseph explains to Jotaro about the man they are chasing down: Dio. Dio killed his grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, 100 years ago. Joseph uses his own Stand, Hermit Purple, to smash open a camera. As it shoots out a photo, Joseph says that his Stand has the ability to transfer visions from a great distance onto film. The photo shows a picture of Dio, and Joseph says that Dio has taken Jonathan's body. This is why Dio has a star shaped birthmark on his neck, something that he, Holy and Jotaro also have.
Jotaro looks at the photo, and uses his Stand's advanced vision to find a fly. The Stand draws a picture of the fly, and Joseph says he'll have this sent to the Speedwagon Foundation for them to investigate. Avdol thinks it could help them narrow down the places where Dio could be. As they talk, Jotaro steps outside, and feels at the birthmark on his neck.
-The first scene adapts part of the Phantom Blood portion of the manga.
--You only get to see the arms of the guy holding the canister with Dio's head in it, and the canister just shatters open by itself. In the manga, Jonathan kills the guy holding the canister, causing him to drop it.
--A major difference is that in the episode, Jonathan's wife Erina isn't present, whilst she's there in the manga. She's next to him when he stabs Dio's head.
-The rest of the episode adapts the first few chapters of the Stardust Crusaders portion of the manga:
--The manga has an opening scene showing Holy reminiscing about Jotaro, and then her talking to the police officers. The episode skips this.
--The manga has Jotaro drink beer, read comic books and listen to a radio in his jail cell, something he doesn't do in the episode.
--In the manga, Joseph and Avdol haven't arrived yet when Jotaro tries to shoot himself. In the episode, they're both there.
--In the manga, the scene showing Dio's casket being salvaged happens right after Jotaro tries to shoot himself. The guys on the boat have dialogue too. In the episode, the salvage scene happens later on, and the boat crew don't say anything.
--Holy meets Joseph at the airport in the manga, whilst in the episode, Joseph meets her at the police station.
--Joseph talks about Dio when everyone is still at the jail in the manga. In the episode, they've all returned to Jotaro's home.
--In the manga, the group go to a cafe after leaving the jail, whilst in the episode, they're at Jotaro's home.
--The manga has Avdol pass Joseph the camera, whilst in the episode, Holy does it.
--Dio is not seen killing the woman in the manga, she's already dead. In the episode, the woman is seen getting drained of her blood, and there are also corpses of more women Dio has killed laying around that the manga doesn't have.
--The scene with Jotaro's Stand drawing the fly doesn't happen until later on in the manga.
--The scene where the woman looks at the cards is not in the manga.
-This is chronologically the first episode, but due to how the OVAs were produced it was the seventh episode to be released.
