Super Street Fighter II: The Tournament Battle was also released in 1993, and is a special version of Super Street Fighter II which lets up to 8 people play together, at the same time.
The way it works is that there are four cabinets linked together, so there will be 2 players to each cabinet. The tournament will progress with quarter finals, then semi finals, then the final. The losers in each of these fights would be put into a losers bracket, so the third to eighth places could be decided. There are no new characters or moves, but there is an altered intro sequence and there are also a few new screens showing the tournament chart. The tournament winner's character will appear on a victory screen, that has some new background art -these would later be reused in Hyper Street Fighter II. After each match is played, players may have to get up and move to a different cabinet for their next game. This is why there are so many different colors for each character -in The Tournament Battle, players would keep track of their character by remembering which color they had chosen. This was also necessary if multiple people had chosen the same character, as it is possible, if unlikely, for all 8 players to choose then same character.
Most of the console ports of Super Street Fighter II feature tournament modes, but they simply have players take turns to fight. It wouldn't be until 2018 until a true port was released, as it was an exclusive bonus game on the Switch version of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. You'll need four Switch consoles and four copies of the game to get it working as intended, but outside of the arcade version, it's the only way to truly experience The Tournament Battle.
It would seem that the arcade version of The Tournament Battle did not sell well, as no other games used it. It seems Capcom at one point did plan to use it in the next game in the series -Super Street Fighter II Turbo -as there is an unused subtitle graphic under the name of The League Battle. Hackers have found unused text and graphics confirming an updated set of rules, among other things. Capcom may have also planned to have a tournament battle version of Darkstalkers -there are unused label graphics for additional players, but again, the tournament mode would not make it into the final game.
