Prototype
Final
The icon of the palace is different in the prototype.

Prototype
Final
This stage can only be selected via level select in the prototype, and for good reason: it's not finished yet. The background graphics are corrupted. There are a lot of layout differences, with the prototype missing a lot of platforms. There are some platforms you can use in the prototype, but they're difficult to see due to the graphics.

Prototype
Final
There is an enemy you can fight in the prototype: an ensnaring maneating plant. You can destroy it, and it is capable of damaging you, but its graphics are also corrupted.

Prototype
Final
The statue can be partially seen in the prototype -the top of it is visible, but the rest of it has corrupted graphics.

Prototype
Final
Stage 5-2 is in better shape in the prototype, in the sense that the graphics are working. But it lacks any candles or enemies. The streaks of light are also missing. You can practically get through the entire stage just by holding right, other than having to jump over a small statue located at the very end of it.

Final
The prototype lacks this room, which the final treats as part of stage 5-2.

Prototype
Final
The prototype lacks any enemies or candles in stage 5-3. The background was moved slightly up in the final version.

Prototype
Final
Stage 5-4 has some differences with the brick placement, most noticeable at the very start. Again, the prototype lacks any candles or enemies.

Prototype
Final
If you play as Eric, you have to get to the top of stage 5-3 to progress, which is possible by using his high jump. His version of stage 5-4 is set on the roof. The prototype lacks any candles or enemies.

Prototype
Final
In the protoype, these bricks have no collision detection, so if you try to jump on them, Eric will just fall through and die. This was fixed in the final.

Despite this, this stage is still beatable in the prototype without the patched rom, so long as you jump over these bricks.

Prototype
Final
This part of the stage has an issue with the foreground graphics in the prototype, which was fixed for the final.

Prototype
Final
Stage 5-5 lacks any enemies or candles in the prototype, and also lacks the spinning platforms in the middle -making it unbeatable when playing as John.

There are some slight graphical differences too, with some red and black colors on the bricks and middle pillar changed to yellow in the final.

Prototype
Final
However, stage 5-5 is beatable with Eric in the prototype, as he starts at the top of the room instead of the bottom. If you time your jump right, you can land on the ledge with the exit on it.

Final
This part of the stage is not in the prototype. It's a single room that consists of a boss fight. The final version treats this as stage 5-6.

Prototype
Final
This part of the stage (5-6 in the prototype, stage 5-7 in the final) is missing any candles or enemies in the prototype.

Prototype
Final
The prototype has two small platforms here. In the final, it's one large platform.

Prototype
Final
Same deal with the above.

Prototype
Final
In the prototype, the screen will lock at this point and the mid-boss theme will start playing, but the mid-boss, the silhouette demon, never shows up. You can't complete this part of the stage because of this.

Prototype
Final
The next stage has some corrupted graphics in the prototype, and the plant pots are missing. There are no candles either.

The floor works differentLY in the prototype, acting as steps. In the final, you move down it smoothly.

Prototype
Final
The graphics for the end of the ramp are glitched in the prototype, and are visibly cut off. There is also a graphical glitch with a platform here, but it can still be jumped onto without any issues.

Prototype
Final
During the boss fight, the platform on the right side has a graphical issue that was fixed for the final. The Princess of Moss has a different sprite for her human form. She has a smaller sprite in the final version, probably so she's a similar size to John and Eric.

Prototype
Final
The second form of the boss had her sprite redrawn for the final version.

Prototype
Final
The boss basically attacks the same way between versions, but the sprites for her eggs and offspring were redrawn for the final version.

Prototype
Final
Upon death, the mutilated corpse of the boss can be seen in the prototype. This doesn't happen in the final version, the boss just flashes and disappears.

In the prototype, completing this stage will send you back to the first stage.
