Yusuke had died. However, at Koenma's discretion, he was entrusted with the position of Spirit Realm detective, and returned to this world. His first task was to take back the three Spirit Realm treasures that three demon thieves -Gouki, Kurama and Hiei -had stolen. And so, after fierce battles and a great struggle, he recovered them! However, Yusuke's trials as a Spirit Realm detective have only just barely started.
The Successor to Genkai -
The Tournament Begins
Yusuke walks through a forest, heading up a series of steps. He's not happy, as why should he be doing something like this on one of his rare breaks?! He thinks back. On the school roof, Botan tells Yusuke that his next mission will be an undercover investigation. She explains that Genkai, who is an acquaintance of Koenma, is looking for a pupil. They want him to go to her, desiring to be that pupil.
Yusuke wants to know more about Genkai, and Botan says she is meant to be among the top five bearers of incredible spiritual abilities, even though she's a human. She has not taken any pupils for a long time, but apparently she now feels the time of her death is near, and wants to leave her secrets to future generations. Koenma had told Botan that many demons would want those secrets, as her techniques are something they would want to use as a weapon. Botan relays this information to Yusuke, and he says they must want him to keep a watch from the inside, and make sure those secrets don't get passed to any demons. Botan says that's right, and that's his job as a Spirit Realm detective.
She then remembers what else Koenma said: if Yusuke does this, it will do well as training for him, as he's the type who won't do any steady training or put any effort into anything, after all. Botan remembers that part was meant to be a secret, and keeps quiet about it to Yusuke. But she does tell him that this job is going to be dangerous, as according to information they've received, there is a demon called Rando who specializes in stealing secrets. He is meant to have stolen the secrets from 99 spiritual practitioners and mystics, and his 100th victim is going to be Genkai. Every time Rando steals a secret, he changes it into a finishing move of his own styling, and uses humans as guinea pigs to test his techniques on. If Genkai's secrets fell into his hands, it would surely mean many more would fall victim to him.
Yusuke says that should would be a serious disaster to mankind... but then enjoying the days off he's got coming up are important too. Botan can't believe what he's just said and asks how does that even compare with this, but Yusuke says as far as he's concerned, it's a huge matter! Botan then remembers something: once this duty has been completed, there is a bonus appointed to it.
She reveals she has a ticket for the World All-style Combat Sports at the Tokyo Dome! Yusuke immediately accepts the job! But back in the present, Yusuke thinks about how he was a fish, just waiting to be hooked. How did Botan even know he was a combat sports fan, anyway?
He is near the top of the steps, and notices some strange spirit energy in front of him. But he thinks that once he's not chosen, he can just go home.
However once he reaches the top, he finds that the place is absolutely packed with people. He thinks they all must be seeking to become the pupil, and overhears two talking about it. They think that if this many people have gathered, then Genkai must possess some fierce abilities. But they've heard that to be able to master these techniques, you must undergo terrible training...
Yusuke then hears his surname called out, and turns around to see Kuwabara! Kuwabara asks him what he's doing in a place like this, but he wants to know why he's here. Kuwabara explains that lately, his spiritual sensitivity has gotten a lot stronger than before. He was hoping Genkai could help him, but when he got here, it was like this.
Yusuke wonders if Genkai even does consultations on people's ailments. Kuwabara tells him he really doesn't know anything, as Genkai is a master of the spirit wave. Using her spirit wave, she can heal people's spiritual afflictions, or knock people down! Someone then yells out that Genkai will now see them.
Genkai says how good of them it is to come here, and reveals herself. Yusuke can't believe this old lady is Genkai. Genkai says they'll start straight away.
Two of the other guys say that apparently, the first test is for her to determine their austerity. Another says he'll overcome whatever task she presents, no matter how difficult. She then causes everyone to drop down where she announces that the first test will be... a lottery! Nobody can quite believe it.
Genkai tells everyone that they will each draw one slip from this pot. As everyone starts to take a slip, Yusuke thinks Genkai really must be a senile old lady after all. He and Kuwabara take a slip, with Yusuke thinking that if he draws a blank, it's not his fault. He'll just go home and come up with an excuse. Kuwabara thinks he didn't even come here to become her pupil.
As everyone now has a slip, Genkai tells them all to open them up, and if there is a red paper inside, it means they've won and have passed the first test. Yusuke and Kuwabara are just thrilled that they've both opened red papers, and both are surprised at each other winning.
Genkai tells anyone who won to follow her, and those who lost can go on home now. As she turns around, she thinks how those papers were specially crafted by her. If someone with a certain level of spiritual power takes it, the paper reacts by turning red. However, two large guys then approach her, telling her to wait. They're well-known spiritual practitioners from Kyushu, who've brought themselves a long way for this. They're not very happy with this lottery, and if they don't like her answer, they'll make her pay for this, even if she is a master.
She tells them that their yammering is grating on her ears. Are they trying to tell her they want to let her good will in letting them return home with their dignity intact go to waste? She thinks their claims of being spiritual practitioners is a joke, and they're just bogus showman that the lottery didn't choose. So they should go on home, take a dump and then hit the sack. They rush in to attack her, but she seems to just scream...
...which sends them flying back. Kuwabara thinks that was awesome, and Yusuke thinks that must have been Genkai's spirit wave.
Genkai mutters her spirit wave must be getting rusty, as in the past, those guys would have been scared off just by her stare alone -she guesses you can't win against age. As she walks off, she tells everyone else not to just stand there and instead follow her. As everyone moves, Yusuke thinks Genkai's technique is an incredible power, which is why demons would be after her. He then remembers about Rando and tries to find out if he is still in this group of people. He tries using his compass, but after it gives off a massive reading, it explodes. Yusuke realizes there's no doubt about it: Rando is still here!
They head in to the building Genkai entered, and find something surprising: a game center! It's packed with arcade games, as Genkai appears above and says for the next test, she's going to have them play these games.
One guy asks how this is going to test them. Genkai says that these are no ordinary games. They will measure how high their spiritual abilities are. The janken game measures their spiritual faculties...
...whilst the punching game measures their spiritual attacks. The karaoke game measures the amount of spiritual energy they have. Unless they pass two or more of these three games, they can go on home.
One guy tries the punching game first, sure of himself. He hits it but his punch measures just a measly 18p, meaning he's failed.
He doesn't understand it, as he holds the record on the game machine in Shibuya. Genkai tells him he doesn't get it -unless you make your physical punching power and spiritual power as one, you won't be able to earn a high score. Kuwabara tries it next, scoring a much more impressive 129p -he's passed.
Kuwabara asks Yusuke if he saw his punching power, but Yusuke thinks it was just a fluke. He'll show him a real punch, and as he makes his strike, he gets a score of 155p.
Genkai sees it and thinks how anyone who scores more than 150p means they have considerable spiritual attacking power... if she was to toughen up that kid, he'll have enough spiritual capacity to vanquish demons. Kuwabara's not happy he's been beaten, but tells Urameshi he'll take him on at the janken game next. Kuwabara plays it and gets a perfect score.
As Kuwabara asks Urameshi what he thought of that, Genkai thinks that Kuwabara's got a pretty sharp spiritual responsiveness. He'd be able to handle some fairly advanced spiritual implements and spells. She then hears some commotion at one of the punching games, as another guy has just scored 175p, beating Yusuke's score.
Another guy gets a good score on the karaoke machine, despite his terrible singing. With the games completed, there are just over 20 people left. Genkai takes them outside, and they approach a forest.
She tells them that up until now, they've just faced warm-up tests. This will be a lot harsher. The remaining candidates sense how the whole forest seems to be radiating with spectral energy. Genkai tells them this whole area is called the enchanted forest, an undeveloped land where compasses do not work. There are also dangerous creatures and natural traps, and an ordinary person would not leave it unharmed. The giant tree they can see from here is their goal, and those who can reach it within two hours will pass.
A couple of the candidates get scared off, and run away in fear. Genkai laughs and says what they've just done could be advisable, as even if you have the slightest spiritual awareness you'd know how dangerous this forest is. One of the candidates thinks only those with legitimate training should go any further.
He also thinks any who aren't ready should go back home. Yusuke takes that as an insult and goes up to him, telling him that if he's saying some well-chosen words to try and make it easier for him to steal her secret's, it won't work. He then asks them if they are even human, as Kuwabara pulls him back and tells him that if he's going to do this, then he'll do it as well.
Genkai then starts them off, and everyone runs into the forest. Genkai easily takes over everyone and says she'll be going on ahead. She advises everyone to put their spiritual sensitivity to work, so they can avoid dangerous routes as much as possible.
As she speeds off, Yusuke thinks that sensitivity has nothing to do with it, and that going straight ahead is obviously the fastest way. The candidates start to go different ways, but some soon get caught up in different traps. Some get tied up by vines...
...whilst others get attacked by wolves. An hour passes, as Genkai waits by the tree and thinks that nobody has got here yet. Using her own powers, she looks out to the forest...
...and senses where people are by focusing on their spirit energies. She finds out that the closest person is around 500 meters away. Meanwhile Yusuke sees that there's no path for him to follow, and there are snakes and leeches everywhere. He's not even sure if he's going straight anymore, but then suddenly something cuts his face.
He looks up and sees that he's stumbled into a nest of bats. A humanoid bat, known as the Bat Tamer, reveals himself, and sees that someone foolish has entered his territory -and he's getting hungry.
Genkai checks her watch and sees there is now only 15 minutes left, but still nobody has gotten here yet. It looks like everyone is having a hard time of it, but she says she'll help out anyone who doesn't make it in time later. But just then, Kuwabara arrives, and is ecstatic to find that he is the first one here. Two more of the candidates then make it.
Meanwhile, the Bat Tamer is rushing all around Yusuke at incredible speeds, and he asks him what's the matter -has he realized that he's no match for him, and given up? That's fine with him, as it means he can just die.
The Bat Tamer drops down and zooms towards Yusuke, but Yusuke punches him in the face. Thinking he just got lucky, he tries again, only for Yusuke to leap up and drop down on him from above, kicking him in the back and sending him to the ground. Yusuke asks him if he has any talents other than moving around.
He yells at him -he's just been waiting around to see what kind of finishing move he had! The Bat Tamer tells him not to be ludicrous, but Yusuke tells him not to be ludicrous, and starts pummeling him. Back at the tree, there is now a total of seven candidates, but the time has now ran out. Kuwabara asks her to wait, as one more should be coming, but she tells him the time is up.
But Yusuke then runs towards the group, saying how he thought the straight way would be the quickest, but it was rough. Genkai realizes he took the straight route, and asks him if the Bat Tamer was formidable.
Yusuke says the Bat Tamer was annoying, what with the way he zipped around, but compared to Hiei's speed he was slow. That guy was no match for him! Genkai wonders just who this kid is, as Kuwabara grabs Yusuke and tells him this is no time to be laughing, as he's ran out of time.
Yusuke asks Genkai if that's right, but she tells him that just for today, she'll overlook it. Yusuke and Kuwabara hug in celebration...
...but quickly revert, with Yusuke telling Kuwabara not to get so chummy with him. Kuwabara tells him not to get so carried away. As this is going on, Koenma is watching from the Spirit Realm. He tells Yusuke not to forget his mission... Rando is among those seven -he mustn't get careless!
The best eight await master Genkai's next trial. Will Yusuke be able to win his way through this fierce test of survival? And what of the mysterious demon, Rando?
