Chapter 171:
Reviving the Spirit Detective Business

Having graduated from high school, Yusuke now has his own ramen stand, but also puts his skills as a spirit detective to use. One day, Keiko comes by and explains that at her school, two girls from the basketball team have come across a strange animal-like footprint in their room. They wiped it away, only for another one to appear, closer than before, the next day. Yusuke goes to investigate (disguising himself as a girl to do so), but doesn't find anything strange, and thinks it's just a prank. However the next day, the room is covered in footprints. The two girls rush off to tell others, only to find all the prints are gone when they return. Yusuke gets Kurama to investigate, and eventually figures out that one of the girls is cooperating with some others to pull it off. He and Yusuke get a traveling demon to scare one of the girls, and everything returns to normal.

Chapter 172:
Special Day

Kuwabara and his family watch some TV, about aliens being on Earth. Someone draws a sketch of one of the aliens, and it looks just like Hiei! In the Demon Realm, Hiei has been assigned to tracking down any humans who enter, and returning them to the Human Realm. Inside Mukuro's fortress, some of her forces discuss their leader. Shigure is surprised Mukuro lost to Enki in the tournament, but Kirin says he doubts they'll ever see her full power again. Hiei goes to see Mukuro and wants her to fight him with her full strength, but she refuses. Hiei mentions someone called Chikou to her, who was the slave trader who used to own Mukuro. He took pleasure in abusing her, but she poured acid over herself to make him lose interest in her. It worked, and she managed to escape.

Hiei asks why Chikou is still alive, as she must know where he is. Mukuro tells him that's enough, but this triggers happy memories of her time with Chikou. Hiei continues to question her, at which point she suddenly hits him with a strike then sends him flying out of her fortress. Hiei goes to see Kurama, to get a certain plant from him, and then goes and finds Chikou. He uses the plant on Chikou, which bonds with him and makes any wound he receives heal itself, unless his head is cut off. He then presents Chikou to Mukuro. He reveals that Chikou did something to her that would make her see a happy memory of them together whenever see thought about getting revenge on him. Hiei tells Mukuro this makes for a fine gift, and then tells her happy birthday.

Some parts of this story are seen in the last episode, and Chikou can be briefly seen in the Yu Yu Hakusho Opening & Ending Encyclopedia.

Chapter 174:
All or Nothing

Shunjun tells Yusuke some terrible news: a terrorist group has taken over the Spirit Realm, and have taken 100 hostages -which includes Koenma and Botan. The terrorists, led by former defense force captain Otake, want the barrier between the Human and Demon Realms restored. They say they will wait for 24 hours, after then a hostage will be killed every minute, and will also fire a weapon called the dimensional cannon at the Earth. Yusuke contacts Enki, and comes up with a plan. He, Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama head off the the Spirit Realm, where they defeat the terrorists and save the hostages. However, the dimensional cannon is ready to fire at Kuwabara's hometown -there are three buttons on it, which will either make the cannon do nothing, self destruct, or fire, but the terrorists refuse to reveal which button does what. Yusuke stays behind to make a choice, whilst almost everyone else clears out to help evacuate the town (Koenma and Hiei discreetly stay behind). Yusuke isn't sure what to do, but then a Genkai-possessed Puu appears, and gives him some advice. Yusuke pushes one of the buttons.

Chapter 175:
And Then...

Yusuke's group go to Genkai's place, as she has passed away. Shizuru reads out her will, which states that she leaves her estate to them. She believes the place will make the perfect place of refuge for any demons, as it's two hours away from the latest town. The group then head off to a beach, and Keiko asks Yusuke what he and Genkai had talked about. Yusuke says it was about which button to press, and it's revealed Yusuke pushed the blue one because it was Keiko's favorite color. Kuwabara also reveals that Yusuke had said "they may have a God, but I have a Goddess on my side", which almost everyone in the group gets a good laugh out of. Keiko then tackles Yusuke and the two land in the sea, where they start laughing. The final panel of the series shows a picture of Hiei, Yusuke, Kuwabara and Kurama.
