Synopsis

Nightwolf informs everyone about another dimensional rip, this time in the New Guinea rainforest. As the team head out, Liu tells Kitana that he has been thinking a lot lately about never growing older -as the winner of the previous Mortal Kombat tournament, the Elder Gods decreed that the victor wouldn't age until the next tournament so they could compete again, generation after generation. He's not sure if he can handle an eternity of constant battle. Kitana says the two of them are both vulnerable, as they are mortal. The team arrive at the rainforest, where Liu is attacked by Rain. However they stop when Kitana tells them to. Kitana reveals that Rain is one of her old friends. Rain says he is now part of a rebel group on Outworld who are trying to stop Shao Kahn from taking a scimitar, one that would let him destroy the strongest warriors. This weapon is located in the realm of Zaa. Rayden appears and is going to make a portal, but warns them that he is powerless in Zaa. Rain reveals the port here already can take them there, so the team follow him to Zaa.

However once they get there they are attacked by some giant beasts, who are eventually defeated. The beasts head through a portal, but when Sonya and the others try to follow, Rain throws a smoke bomb at them and then forces Kitana through the portal with him. The team realize Rain has tricked them, trapping them here whilst also taking Kitana. Rayden appears and creates a portal to get them all back to Earth, as Shao Kahn has started his invasion. However Liu and Stryker decide to stay on Zaa, so they can rescue Kitana.

On Earth, Sonya, Jax and Sub-Zero receive assistance from Rayden in fighting a massive army of Cybers. On Zaa, Liu finds one of Kitana's fans on the ground, pointing towards a castle. They get to the castle and climb up one of the walls, only to find Motaro and some Centaurs waiting for them. They defeat Motaro, so Stryker says he can deal with the rest. Liu heads inside the castle. He finds Kitana chained up but has to fight a giant five headed monster, who he defeats by using a more powerful version of his fireball.

Kitana is freed and the three attempt to leave, only for Rain to show up. He reveals he has sided with Shao Kahn, but Kitana then fights him in a one on one battle. Kitana eventually defeats him, but a pillar gets shattered in the process, causing the entire castle to start crumbling. Rain tells Kitana they'll meet again, and then jumps into a pool to escape. Rayden then appears and makes a portal to get them all back to Earth.

Notes

-The flashback sequence with Liu Kang and Shang Tsung is a reference to the 1995 live action movie, although it ends differently -in the movie, Shang is knocked into a pit which contains lots of spikes, in the cartoon, the pit has no spikes. Although surprisingly, the cartoon still shows Shang melting into a skeleton.

-Rain was originally intended to be in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but was cut out as a playable character. He did, however, make an appearance in the arcade version's attract mode sequence, tricking players into thinking there was an additional ninja character in the game. There wasn't, but when Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was released on the Super Nintendo and SEGA Genesis, Rain was included as a playable character. He also appeared in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, the latest game in the series when this cartoon started to air.

-This episode also marked the first time Rain appeared unmasked, as in the games, he always had a mask on like most of the other ninja characters.

Errors

-When Jax places his hand on Liu's shoulder, fingernails are drawn on his bionics. These disappear during the next shot.

-When Motaro throws Liu, Liu's wrist bands are missing.
-Liu has Motaro in a headlock, but when a fireball gets thrown out by one of the Centaurs, Liu is suddenly stood next to Stryker.
-Liu's wrist bands are missing again during this shot.
