Deep within the mansion, Integra Hellsing hides from her own Uncle. Richard Hellsing wants her -he wants to find his niece so he can kill her. She was made the head of the family by her farther, Arthur. Richard had waited twenty years for him to die so he could become the head, but then mere hours before his death, he made Integra the head. This was an insult to Richard, one he cannot accept. It was an unforgivable act of betrayal. Making her way through the mansion, Integra remembers what her late father once told her.
Arthur told his daughter that, if all hope is lost and her enemies and closing in on her, she should go to the last cell of the deepest dungeon. Inside that cell lies the darkest legacy of their family. It will be the instrument of her salvation. Back in the present, Integra reaches the dungeon.
But the only thing she finds is a corpse -how is that supposed to help her? Before she can do anything else, Richard and some of his men arrive and open the door. Wasting no time, Richard shoots Integra, and the bullet grazes her arm.
Integra sees that her uncle is willing to kill her to become the family head, and he takes aim so he can finish her off. But before he can fire, everyone in the room sees something: the corpse is moving! It licks up Integra's spilt blood.
The corpse breaks free of his bonds and then looks at Richard with a grin on his face.
The town of Cheddar, which is located in England. Three police officers -Simon, Eddie and Victoria Seras -have been sent to a church. They enter the church and come across the Priest -who is sucking the blood out of a woman!
When the Priest sees that he has been spotted, he calls upon his servants and sends them to attack. The police officers start firing but are hopelessly outnumbered. Nearby, numerous police have been called in and an official has a surprise visitor. He asks her to explain herself once again.
Integra start to smoke a cigar and says it again: these monsters are called ghouls, and the town of Cheddar has become a den of ghouls. Humans become ghouls if they are bitten by a vampire, and the vampire can then control them. This means that there is a vampire somewhere in Cheddar. The official doesn't take her story seriously, but Integra says he shouldn't dare question her. The Hellsing family has protected this country for generations, and is charged by the Queen to finding and destroy all supernatural and satanic threats to the church and crown. They can send in all the police they want, they'll either become ghouls, or food for ghouls. Worse yet, if a Vampire drinks the blood from a virgin of the opposite sex, a new vampire is created.
One of the police officers then says that he's completely lost contact with their second and third squads. Integra says that to stop the ghouls, you need to stop them at the source: kill the vampire. This is where Hellsing comes in. One of their finest anti-vampire field agents is already on his way to Cheddar, and this matter will be settled in a matter of hours. This agent is walking towards the town, and as he looks at the moon, he says that he couldn't imagine a more perfect evening.
Seras has ran from the church, after seeing Simon and Eddie fall to the ghoul hordes. However she then finds herself surrounded by enemies and can't escape. The Priest appears and says running is useless. She fires at him, but he warps forwards and grabs her, saying that guns won't help either. And her little boyfriends belong to him now, just as she'll soon belong to him.
Seras fires one more shot at the Priest, right at his head...but it doesn't do anything. He laughs and says he looks for loyalty in his servants, he wouldn't want a vampire with free will running around. It's a pity that girls her age aren't usually virgins, but he'll rape her anyway, then suck her blood slowly and after that she can join the rest of his ghouls.
They then hear something nearby. The Priest asks who the newly appeared man is, and he says that he's the Priest's death. The Priest is amused by this and has his ghouls shoot him. The man is blown apart by the bullets, and as the ghouls stop firing, the Priest laughs and asks him if that was the best he had. The man, however, isn't dead yet, and starts to laugh. The Hellsing agent is a vampire himself. Humans make for poor vampire killers, as they're mortal and corruptible. The most effective weapon against a vampire is another, more powerful, vampire.
As the man rises, he quickly reforms and pulls out a gun. Within seconds, all of the ghouls and destroyed.
The man says that Manchester Cathedral's silver cross was melted down to make these exploding shells he uses. Nothing he shoots ever gets back up. The Priest doesn't understand why a vampire would try to save these pathetic humans, but he then gets desperate and takes Seras hostage. He tells the man to let him go, as if he doesn't, he'll kill her. The man asks Seras one question: is she a virgin?
She reluctantly admits that she is, so the man fires a single bullet -that hits both her and the Priest. As Seras falls forward, the Priest falls back, and the man dashes towards him. As he charges he remembers something...
The young Integra had just shot and killed her uncle, and asked the man what his name was. He told her that her father called him Alucard.
Back in the present, Alucard pierces through the Priest and completely destroys him. He then goes to the barely alive Seras and says that he had to shoot through her to shoot the vampire in his heart. She has no time left, what does she want to do? Seras weakly reaches out, thinking of her father and mother, as Alucard takes her hand. He tells the police girl that tonight really is a beautiful night.
Seras suddenly finds herself in a white void. She wonders where she is but then finds that she isn't alone: ghouls are after her! They chase her around but she then bumps into Alucard, who asks her what it feels like to be dead, and that the choice was hers...the path of the Draculina. He then moves closer towards her neck, revealing his fangs...
Seras then wakes up. She is relieved to find that her terrible wound is completely healed, but then startled to see Alucard right next to her. He asks her what it feels like to be a vampire. She pulls out a mirror and sees something in her smile: fangs. Her reaction to that isn't good.
Integra and her butler, Walter, then arrive. Integra tells the police girl to stop making so much noise, and even if she is a vampire, she's still English, so she should have some manners. Seras asks where she even is now, and Integra tells her that she is in the Hellsing organization's headquarters. They're the monster who destroy the other monsters. She'll now be working for them. Walter presents her with her new uniform. Integra then says that they've received news of a strong of vampire attacks, so she will go and kill the vampire.
Integra and Walter visit a house that was attacked. All inside were killed, some have had their heads ripped off and offensive messages have been written in blood on the walls. However they've already figured out where the targets are heading. The targets are a couple of young vampires in the making, who have just completed another attack. They embrace each other and says that soon they'll have eternal life, and become invincible vampires forever.
They then hear the doorbell ring, so one of the vampires goes off to investigate. He gets cut down by multiple bullets, as Alucard appears.
The vampire retrieves his uzi and opens fire, laughing manically until he runs out of ammo. Alucard hasn't been harmed at all, and tells the vampire that he can't even change his form into a mist or a bat, and he can't heal any of the wounds he just received. Now that he's out of bullets he can't even defend himself. Does he dare to call himself Nosferatu? The vampire runs but Alucard shoots him repeatedly before destroying him. He then tells the police girl that now it's her turn.
Seras is on the roof of the house. The other vampire has made a run for it, and is already some distance away. Alucard tells Seras that she needs to imagine another eye on her forehead, aim from there. If she shoots like a human, then she'll miss like a human. Aim for the heart, and put the bullet right through her.
Alucard floats up to the roof as Seras says that it is so dark, and she doesn't have a scope on her weapon. Alucard tells her that those are human complains, and now, she needs to make the shot like a proper vampire. Seras concentrates, and her eyes change color from blue to red. She fires and seconds later, the remaining vampire has been taken out.
Seras realizes that she barely felt any recoil when she fired, despite the gun's size, and even though things are pitch black outside, she could see more clearly than during the day. And she just realized she heard Alucard in her head earlier, like some form of telepathy. What's she becoming? Alucard tells her that this is only the beginning, and she has a long road ahead of her. Back at Hellsing HQ, Integra receives more reports of vampire attacks, far too many reports. These cheap, pathetic vampires seem to attack at random, and there are so many of them it's like they're being coming off a factory line.
NOTES
This episode adapts the manga's first volume, although there are several changes. In the manga, the flashback scene showing Integra's past take place after Alucard shoots Seras, for the episode this was moved forward to show the majority of it at the very start. Seras is first seen retreating from the Priest in the manga, but the episode had a new scene added where she and a couple of other police officers have a confrontation with the Priest in a church. The manga also has a different opening where the Priest is shown arriving in the village, and how several villagers went to confront him, but were attacked. This scene wasn't included in the episode. Seras thinking of her parents before accepting Alucard's offer doesn't happen in the manga, there is instead a different scene afterwards where Alucard carries her to Integra. The funny dream Seras has, along with the scene where she wakes up, weren't present in the manga.
