Cosmic Carnage

Cosmic Carnage is a one on one fighting game. Think of it as Mortal Kombat in space and you've pretty much got it -right down to the lacklustre gameplay. The game feels like a tech demo more than anything else, as character special moves feature sprite scaling, and the game camera will often zoom in or out (similar to Samurai Shodown on the Neo Geo) during a match.

The game was very clearly rushed out to release it in time for the 32X launch. There are only eight characters, which was pretty low even for the time. Gameplay is clunky and there is often a lot of slow-down during a fight. The backgrounds are very basic, with several not featuring any animation at all, whilst the ones that do animate have barely anything going on in them. Whilst it is possible to kill your opponent at the end of a winning round, there are no fatality moves, you can just use a special move to destroy your opponent. If you want blood and guts in your fighting games, you'd be better off purcahsing Mortal Kombat II.

Info

Cosmic Carnage features 8 playable characters. The aim of the single player mode is simple enough, with you having to fight against CPU controlled opponents. There is no boss at the end, but the CPU is fairly tough and beating your opponents quickly can be a real challenge, which is what you need to do if you want to get the best ending. One of the few plus point is the story, which isn't the usual "there is a big tournament" angle most other fighters go for. Instead, the story has a prison ship overun by some of the inmates, who then decide to plow their ship into a military cruiser. With only one escape shuttle left, the four survivors of each ship must fight and kill each other until only one remains standing, as only one is going to take the last shuttle.

Four of these characters -the ones from the military ship -can select between different amor parts between fights, which alters the special moves they have available. However parts of the amor can be knocked off, and this can stop them from being able to use their special moves. The four renegade characters have no armor to choose from, but are able to use their special moves at any time.

Each character has a range of special moves, including projectiles, hurricane kicks and tackles. There are also two buttons for punches, two for kicks and another for taunts.

Cheats

Best ending
To get the best ending -where your character successfully escapes in the shuttle and doesn't die in an explosion -you must clear the game as quickly as possible. However, it still doesn't seem to be known exactly how quick you need to be to do this. "As quickly as possible" is all I could find out -so I'd guess that not losing any rounds or using any continues might help.

Unlock Cyber Brawl
To use this cheat you must have a six button controller. During the intro sequence, hold down B, X and Z and then press start. When the title screen appears, it should feature the Cyber Brawl logo. This is the Japanese version which features a different story (with different into dialogue, which is still in English) and three of the characters will by human rather than alien. Most of the character names will also be different.

Prototypes

There are currently nine prototypes for this game, read about them here.

Trivia

Naruto is the only character to have the same name in both the Japanese and American versions.
