Hokuto no Ken

Hokuto no Ken (Saturn/Playstation)
-From Rage Quitter 87's Fist of the North Star site

On the 22nd of December 1995, Hokuto no Ken was released on the SEGA Saturn, and only in Japan. The game is a graphic adventure, as Kenshiro finds out that Lin and Lui, daughters of the Celestial Emperor, have been captured and a new style of Hokuto has appeared. He sets out to rescue them by finding information and fighting new enemies.

The game has to be set in an alternate universe, as certain characters who are meant to be dead -such as Ryuken and Toki -show up in this alive and well. Many of the new characters are based on the classic characters from the original manga/anime, including look-alikes of Raoh, Hyo and even the Nanto Goshasei.

A Playstation version was released in August 1996, which is slightly different to the Saturn version.

Story

Bat and Lin are getting married, but a man called Jado arrives with his gang and reveals a fighting style that Bat recognises as Hokuto! Jado captures Lin, whilst Kenshiro finds out about what happened after finding Bat. Kenshiro goes on a journey to try and find Lin, encountering several lesser foes and finding out information from villagers. His travels take him to several different places, including Mamiya's village and the land of Shura.

Kenshiro meets important characters along the way, such as Zaki, the female successor to Nanto Suichoken, and Falco's son, Misshu. He eventually finds out about the new Hokuto style, and learns that it is called Hokuto Mumyō Ken (North Star Avidyā Fist). As Kenshiro gets closer to finding Lin and Lui, he finds out about Zenoh, a Hokuto Mumyō Ken master who is behind everything.

Gameplay

The story mode mainly has you playing as Kenshiro, who will automatically move from place to place. Occasionally you will run into an enemy, and a battle will start. The aim is to simple reduce the opponent's life gauge to nothing -each character has various offensive techniques they can select, along with options for defense and even life regeneration. Unfortunately I don't understand Japanese text, so trying to explain how things work is impossible. You seem to have to quickly select the techniques you want to try and use, as the opponent does the same, and then once they are selected you have to mash a button to charge up your touki (fighting aura). Whoever fills their touki gauge the fastest seems to get to strike first, but I'm not 100% certain on how it all works.

Along with the battles, Kenshiro will also encounter villagers who will have brief conversations with him, providing some information. I guess these conversations couldn't have been that important since they got cut out of the Playstation version! There are also plenty of animated cutscenes in the game, which will play when certain points are reached in the story.

A VS. mode (called "Battle Mode") is also present, which lets you either face the CPU or a human player. Up to 10 different characters can be used, but you'll need to enter a password to unlock them all. The battle mode plays the same was as the battles found in the story mode.
