Synopsis

Gouki awakens, having lost a fight agaisnt Gouken. As Sayaka tends to his wounds, Gouken says he had to take action when Gouki started using the dark hadou, a technique that their master, Goutetsu, has forbidden. Despite Goutetsu's warnings, Gouki decides to follow his own path. Realizing that Gouki is secretly using the dark hadou, Goutetsu confronts him. Sayaka and Gouken find out about the fight and go to where it is taking place, but Sakaya falls down, as Gouken realizes she's pregnant. Gouken then arrives at the fight, only to see that Gouki has killed Goutetsu with the shun goku satsu technique. This technique has altered Gouki's face, making him look like a demon. Gouki takes the beads Goutestu was wearing, and walks away.

Years later, Ryu returns to his dojo, where he meets a girl called Fuka. Fuka lives nearby and often waters the flowers here. Ryu heads into the dojo, where he feels the presence of Gouki. Ryu wants to fight Gouki, as he was the one who killed Gouken, his master. He then wakes up, seemingly having had a dream about Gouki. He instead meets an old monk, who somehow knows about Gouki. The two fight, but Ryu is unable to compete against the monk's power and speed, even after using a hadouken against him. The monk decides to make Ryu has apprentice, and introduces him to his granddaughter -Ryu realizes it's Fuka, who he met earlier.

Ryu begins to train for his battle with Gouki. He tells Fuka about how he trained under Gouken, but one day, Gouki showed up and killed Gouken with a single blow. Ryu had wanted to fight Gouki right then, but before he died, Gouken told him no. Back in the present, Fuka explains that her father was a martial artist, who died during a fight. Just then, a girl called Sakura shows up, who has been searching for Ryu.

They head back to the dojo, where Sakura says she met Ken, who told her where to find Ryu. She challenges Ryu to a match, as she knows he's a true fighter. Ryu thinks about what she said, and decides to fight her. The two fight, and whilst Sakura is completely outmatched, she doesn't give up. Ryu becomes determined to fight Gouki, so the monk tells him where Gouki can be found.

Ken arrives, wanting to go and help Ryu, but runs into the monk first. The monk defeats him, not wanting him to interfer with Ryu and Gouki. Ryu finds Gouki and begins fighting him, but is unable to do any damage. He starts using the dark hadou, causing spirits of many fallen warriors to appear. The monk sees them and says these spirits are victims of the dark hadou as well, having used it to destroy not only their enemies, but also their allies, their loved ones and themselves.

Ryu sees an image of Fuka in Gouki's hadou. He realizes using the dark hadou is wrong, as Gouki tells Ryu that his path to becoming a true fighter has been obscured. Gouki throws out a tremendous amoung of dark hadou, but Ryu breaks through it and seemingly strikes Gouki. A large explosion rocks the area the two are fighting in, which is seen by the monk, Ken, Fuka and Sakura. Gouki tells Ryu that he intends to fight with him again, some day. Ryu watches, and sees the sign of the heavens appear in the sky above Gouki.

The monk releases Ken, and tells him to go to Ryu. As Ken runs off, the monk says he kept the promise made to Gouken, but he now suddenly feels tired. He falls to his knees, and weakly says that he feels he has lived for too long. The next morning, Fuka prays in front of the graves. A new one has been made for the old monk. Ryu sees her, but he doesn't approach, and instead turns around and walks away.

Notes

-The film was made specifically for the American market, and was not given a standalone release in Japan. It would eventually be released in Japan, but only as an extra feature on the DVD for 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

-Gouki is the character's name in the Japanese versions of the Street Fighter games. He had his name changed to Akuma outside of Japan. But in this movie, he's called Gouki in the English dub.

-The old monk is never given a real name. He's listed as "Old Master" in the credits.

-During the credits, Sakura's surname is misspelt as "Kasuga" instead of "Kasugano" for the Japanese voice cast. Oddly, when the English voice cast get their credits, her surname isn't mentioned.

-Another oddity is that during the English credits, Ryu is misspelt as "Ryuno" whilst Gouki is "Gouk", despite both of these names being spelt correctly during the Japanese credits.

Releases

Manga Entertainment's DVD release can be picked up for next to nothing on eBay. It includes both the English and Japanese dubs of the film, and has some extra features like a behind the scenes video with the Japanese voice cast. The back of the box claims the film is a prequel to Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation, but it really isn't, and has nothing to do with it. If Generations was a prequel, then Sakura should already know who Ryu is in the first Alpha movie. The back of the box also has Ryu wearing a red bandanna, whilst in the film itself, he wears a white one.
