The Shadow Dancer arcade game ran on SEGA's System 18 hardware, and was released in arcades in 1989 -a year before the Genesis version. Arcade Shadow Dancer is a direct sequel to Shinobi (released in 1987) and takes place 20 years after it. You play as Hayate Musashi, the son of Joe Musashi. He is a ninja, and for whatever reason, his dog has come along for the fight also. Hayate's mission is to destroy a terrorist organization, who have planted many bombs across various locations. Throughout the stages you have to find the bombs and kill any terrorists you come across. Hayate has an infinite supply of shurikens, and can also send his dog, Yamato, to attack enemies. He can also use ninjitsu techniques to kill all enemies around him.
Having barely played this game myself I haven't got much to say about it, but apparently a lot of people consider the Genesis Shadow Dancer to be the superior game. Arcade Shadow Dancer was later ported to the Master System, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum. There has yet to be an arcade perfect home version of Shadow Dancer.
