Q] Is there any way of telling which revision a game cartridge would contain from looking at it?
A] Unfortunately not -you need to play the game to find out which revision it is. The tell-tale signs are with the copyright screens when the game first loads up, but to find out if you've got a rev00 cart you'll need to play through to the sixth round's boss.
Q] Why haven't you got the "Stage Practice" cheat listed?
A] Because it doesn't work -many cheat sites list a code for a stage practice option, which involves holding the A, B and C buttons down and pressing start at the title screen. This code is actually for Shadow Dancer, the next game in the series, and does not work in The Revenge of Shinobi. It seems the bigger cheat sites listed this long a go, and all the smaller ones just copied it, despite the fact it is wrong. There is no stage practice code in The Revenge of Shinobi.
Q] Was the prototype version of the game available on the SEGA Channel?
A] SEGA Channel was, for those who don't know, a network service for the Genesis which could, among other things, offer downloadable games. Hackers who took a look through the prototype version found that part of the MEMO section of the ROM header says "A0115 Sega Channel". So it seems possible that, somehow, the prototype version was put on the SEGA Channel service at some point.
Q] Any prototype screenshots?
A] After briefly looking around the internet the only one I found was the one above, which was used on an arcade flyer for the Mega-Tech system. It shows a different version of round 1's second stage, with what appears to be a completely black dog enemy inside the house. This enemy does not appear in the final game.
On the back of the box for the American and European versions of the game, enemy ninjas can be seen throwing white shurikens, but in the actual game, they are orange. It is possible these images came from this prototype.
