The Game Boy version was released in 1995. Whilst this is just called "Street Fighter II", this version is clearly based on Super Street Fighter II -the character artwork and endings are from that game, plus everyone has their additional moves, such as Ken's flaming dragon punch, and Ryu's new fireball. In addition to the usual arcade mode, a link up mode is present for two player games, and this also has an exclusive survival mode where you fight each opponent with a single life bar -you can regain some life by defeating your next opponent.

Whilst the game looks decent in stills, with large character sprites, in motion the game is incredibly choppy and not very good. It may only be on the Game Boy, but you have to wonder why Capcom decided to release a version for such an underpowered machine. Only 9 characters are included, and none of the new challengers made the cut. The bonus stages are all gone, and the controls have been greatly simplified as the Game Boy only has two face buttons. Pressing the buttons lightly will result in a weak punch or kick, whilst pressing them more firmly will have your character do a stronger attack.

This version also features Super Game Boy support. In addition to adding a limited amount of color to the game, a border is added around the game screen, showing off the stage for the character you are fighting.
