To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the series, Capcom released Hyper Street Fighter II in 2004. It saw a limited arcade release outside of Japan, but was thankfully released on the Playstation 2 and Xbox. This game lets players pick any version of any character who appeared in the Street Fighter II series, letting you have all kinds of never seen before battles. So you could pick the version of Guile from The World Warrior, who has that extremely fast jab punch, and end up fighting against the Super Street Fighter II Turbo version of Ryu, who has all of his special moves from that game along with his super combo, juggle moves and the ability to tech hit throws.
Things are fine when 2 human players are going at it, but the game falls flat in the single player mode -laughably, in single player games, the CPU opponents you fight are always the Super Street Fighter II Turbo versions. This is just Capcom being incredibly lazy and it makes the single player mode completely pointless, as it misses the entire concept of this game completely. You also have to deal with the notoriously difficult Super Turbo A.I. of the CPU fighters.
And other areas feel rushed -only the Super Street Fighter II versions of stages, music and endings are included. It would have been much nicer if the different stages and the like from The World Warrior and Champion Edition made it into this, and would change depending on which version of a character you were going to fight. It just seems this was put together quickly, and Street Fighter II deserves more than this.
The console versions of this game are extremely cheap and are worth owning, especially the versions which come with Street Fighter III 3rd Strike on them. But I could only really recommend playing this game with human players, as you'll never get to truly experience it if playing alone.
