This prototype of the game has a build date of August 22nd, 1994. It is one of three Virtua Racing Deluxe prototypes dumped by drx in 2008, and is the earliest one of the three.

Final |
The main menu lacks the mode select text that the final has. The icons are all missing their pictures behind the text, and most of the visuals are different too. Highlighting Virtua Racing in the prototype has several small cars appear in the prototype, in the final version you get one larger card which is over the V.R. letters. The background has different colors. |

Final |
Highlighting time attack displays a car in the prototype, in the final version the car is slightly more detailed and is placed over a stopwatch. |
Prototype |
Final |
Highlighting the 2 player mode displays two cars in the prototype, again, these cars are slightly less detailed that what the final version has, and lacks the VS letters. |
Prototype |
Final |
Highlighting the records option displays a bottle of wine, a trophy and a helmet in the prototype, whilst in the final, there's just a trophy. |
Prototype |
Final |
The options menu doesn't work in the prototype -if you try and access it, you just get returned to the main menu. The controller model also lacks the musical notes that the final version has. |
Prototype |
Final |
The car select screen has some small differences. The car models are slightly different, in the final version the wheels for each car are a little more detailed. The prototype lacks the image of each car behind the text that the final has. The transmission select has automatic aligned left and manual aligned right in the prototype, the final version centralized them both. |
Prototype |
Final |
The circuit models on the course select screen are zoomed in are the prototype, and are far too close to the screen. They were moved back for the final version. The prototype's "Acro Polis" was changed to "Acropolis" in the final, and "High Land" became "Highland". The Highland and San Park courses are missing their icons in the prototype, although the icons for the other courses are there. |
Prototype |
Final |
There are some very small changes to the HUD. The lap time text in the top right corner has no space between the words in the prototype, in the final version a tiny space was added. The same thing happens with the course name text in the bottom right. The ship ride near the end of the course has some text on it in the prototype, which was removed from the final. It's difficult to read the text, it looks like "CS4" to me. |
Prototype |
Final |
The bay bridge course lacks the virtua cows in the prototype that the final has. There's one in front of the windmill and another one behind it. |
Prototype |
Final |
The arrows on the signboards are thinner in the prototype than they are in the final. Also note how in this view, the car's wheels are so dark that the course map blends in to them. The colors of the wheels were changed in the final to stop this from happening. |
Prototype |
Final |
Just after the third checkpoint is this area you're not supposed to go down, in the final version some fencing was added to the left. |
Prototype |
Final |
If you turn around here and head the wrong way, there's no black & yellow barrier. One was added in the final version. |
Prototype |
Final |
The billboard on the arcopolis course states 7th in the prototype. Changed to 32X for the final. Whilst I'm here, the speedometer for the stock car is the same as what the formula has in the prototype. In the final version, it has a unique speedometer. |
Prototype |
Final |
The highland course, being one of two new circuits for the 32X version, has a large number of differences in the prototype. The colors of the road are different and the buildings objects are there, but they lack any details. Again, like with the stock car, the prototype car lacks the unique speedometer it has in the final version. |
Prototype |
Final |
Leading up to the first turn, it was planned for a large building to be shown if the prototype is anything to go by. This was taken out of the final version. Note how the road lacks arrows in the prototype. |
Prototype |
Final |
More building changes. I get the impression a lot of the buildings were made smaller or removed for the final version to help prevent slowdown. |

This is one of the few buildings to have some detail on it in the prototype, but the window colors were still changed for the final version. |
Prototype |
Final |
There's a gap here in the prototype which was covered up with a hill in the final version. |
Prototype |
Final |
This part of the course doesn't have any trees in the prototype, and the cliff to the left is different. The final version adds some trees here and added grass to the top of the cliff. |

There's no barrier here in the prototype, but there is an invisible wall that prevents you from going this way. A barrier was added for the final version. |

Sand Park, the other new circuit for the 32X version, also has a lot of differences in the prototype. The starting straight lacks the billboard signs the final version has. The building in the middle is also different. |
Prototype |
Final |
If you take the right path around the first building, the prototype lacks some arrows at the front and back of it that the final has. It's also missing this rock formation around either side of the road leading up to the first turn. |
Prototype |
Final |
The prototype lacks the sign the final version has here. |
Prototype |
Final |
The tunnel has some strange lines on the road which are colored blue, yellow and red. The final version removed all of these and replaced with with yellow arrows. |
Prototype |
Final |
This part lacks the SEGA text on the grass that the final version features. |
Prototype |

Prototype |
Final |
The section between the road split is really different in the prototype, as it features a lake which was removed from the final version. Instead, the final version features a SEGA Sports billboard and a massive rock face instead of the lake. |
Prototype |
Final |
After you finish the split, if you turn around, the final version lacks the Knuckles sign the final version has here. |
Prototype |
Final |
After finishing a race, the best lap text was changed in the final version, making it slightly clearer to read. |
Prototype |
Final |
The results screens has your best time in blue in the prototype, whilst in the final, it's listed in red. Also note how the car is listed as "Proto Type", this was changed to one word in the final game. |
Prototype |
Final |
The above sound effects are all different between the prototype and final versions. The final version used for these recordings is from the American game -some of these sounds were changed again when the Japanese version was released. |
Notes
-The prototype lacks the SEGA sport logo screen that the final version has. It also doesn't let you enter your initials after setting a fastest lap, again, the final version has a separate screen for this. If you complete a race in 1st place, the prototype doesn't add a cup to the circuit's icon at the course select screen. This does happen in the final version, at least when playing on the normal or hard difficulty setting.
-Car damage hasn't been implemented in this prototype yet.
-The intro theme for the highland and sand park courses uses the bay bridge theme in the prototype, in the final version the new courses have their own unique themes.
