Prototype
Final
The title screen has a different background, and the "GAROU" text is poorly placed, making it difficult to read. This was somewhat fixed for the final, although it probably should have been moved down a few pixels.

The 0 on the credits counter has a strike through it in the prototype, but doesn't in the final.

Prototype
Final
A prototype typo was fixed for the final version.

Prototype
Final
Hokutomaru's select icon has him wearing a yellow scarf in the prototype. This was fixed to show the correct, red color in the final.

The player select text is too far to the left in the prototype, cutting part of it off. This was fixed for the final. Character names are also a bit more to the left, but they don't get cut off.

Prototype
Final
If you select Hotaru with the C button in the prototype, her profile picture has her with a green outfit and green hair. However, her sprite has her with a black outfit and black hair. The final version fixed her profile picture so it shows the correct colors that match her sprite.

Perhaps SNK intended for Hotaru to have a green outfit originally, but none of her alternate colors feature this in the final version.

This is also hard to see, but Terry's profile picture is a different shade of brown in the prototype for his A button outfit..

Prototype
Final
Terry's profile picture for his B button color is a lighter shade of green in the prototype than it is in the final.

Prototype
Final
Freeman's C and D button outfit colors don't change his skin color for his profile pictures in the prototype, but they do in the final.

This is also really difficult to see here, but the "M" in "TIME" is very slightly different in the prototype version. The number is also slightly further to the left.

Prototype
Final
Jenet's D button outfit doesn't change her profile picture's hair color and arm rings in the prototype, but it does in the final.

Tizoc's B button outfit color has his profile picture feature a slightly lighter shade of blue in the prototype.

Prototype
Final
Tizoc's D and D button outfit colors also feature slightly different shades for his profile pictures in the prototype (the D button color change is really minor).

Prototype
Final
Kim Jae Hoon's C button outfit makes his profile picture display a blue outfit for him in the prototype, even through his sprite has him in lime green colors. This was fixed for the final version. The blue color might have been an alternate color intended for him to have, but it isn't present in the final game.

His D button color doesn't change his profile picture's hair color in the prototype, but it does in the final.

Prototype
Final
The CPU opponent icons are a little lower in the prototype, leading to the credit text overlapping them. The final fixed this by moving them up slightly.

Prototype
Final
The score numbers are green in this prototype. They were changed to blue for the final.

Prototype
Final
In the prototype, there's a glitch on Tizoc's stage. When the monitor tries to display the fighter's names, it corrupts, and also glitches part of the background in the middle and far left. This was fixed for the final version.

It is possible to get rid of the corruption in the prototype by using a super move.

Prototype
Final
A slight changed to Grant's dialogue in the first cutscene was made for the final version.

Prototype
Final
Defeated CPU opponents aren't grayed out in the prototype, whilst they are in the final.

Prototype
Final
A typo was fixed in Grant's dialogue for Terry's story.

Prototype
Final
When Grant has been defeated, the shading on your character is slightly different in the cutscene in the prototype.

Prototype
Final
Now get ready, because the text for the cutscene before you fight Kain is really messed up in the prototype.

Prototype
Final
Here we go.

Prototype
Final

Prototype
Final
Needless to say, all of this was fixed for the final version.

Prototype
Final
The endings are only partially finished in this prototype -Kain's speech and his mansion collapse are present, but anything after that isn't. Instead, you'll get a "coming soon!" screen, featuring art of the character you beat the game with and a glitchy message. Rock's stage music plays during this screen.

Prototype
Final
The initial entry screen has a glitched background. It also plays music (the music used as the continue service music in the final version) whilst the final doesn't play music.

Prototype
Final
The fighting level screen works in the prototype, although the colors for the numbers and score text were changed for the final version.

Console version differences

Prototype
Final
The boss character's colors are mostly the same, apart form their D button colors. Grant's hair color and cloak button for his profile picture are red in the prototype, but changed to orange for the final.

Kain's D button profile picture color has him with red eyes and a red handkerchief in the prototype, these things were changed to blue for the final -although the eye color change was most likely a mistake SNK made.

Prototype
Final
The option screen has a different background color in the prototype, and the non-highlighted text is green. The text was changed to red for the final, which I think makes it more difficult to read due to the changed background color.

Certain highlighted text in white and yellow in the prototype, whilst it's all yellow in the final.

Prototype
Final
The pad config screen has some green text in this prototype, whilst the final has blue.

The prototype's options and pad config screens also lack the black bars to the left and right that the final has.

Notes

-The boss codes don't work in the prototype. In the final version, there are two different cheat codes you can use that let you play as either Grant or Kain. Perhaps there is a way to unlock them in the prototype, maybe it has different codes? In console mode, you can select the bosses in either the prototype or final version without codes.

-In the prototype, the announcer will still call Khushnood Butt and Tizoc by their Japanese names of Marco Rodriguez and The Griffon respectively. See this page for more info.

-The above noted profile picture color changes also effect other parts of the game, such as the win quote screens.

-The prototype's first intro is the one that features Rock and Terry about to fight, the second intro is the one that features Geese Howard. For the final, the intros were swapped around.

-If you finish round one and still the super gauge filled, it will deplete and re-fill before the next round starts in the prototype. It stays filled between rounds in the final version.

-One thing I can't show with pictures is the amount of gameplay differences the prototype has. Basically there are a lot of things you can do in the prototype that can't be done in the final, like this 100% Marco combo.
