These screenshots are from issue 41 of Electronic Gaming Monthly. They show a version of the game which looks absolutely nothing like the final version. The above screenshot shows a level not in the final game, along with Annet having a different sprite. The life and magic gauges are different, and the magic icon shows fire fireballs, this attack isn't in the final game either.

The top right shows that this early version had an EXP system instead of a score, similar to what El Viento had.

Preview
Again, this screenshot shows another different level, there's nothing like this in the final game. You can get a better look at the EXP text in this screen, showing that to let to the next level would take 7,500 points. The EXP count is at zero in both screenshots, so it's likely enemies weren't implemented in this build yet.

Another point is that Annet can be seen holding her sword in both images, even though she's just running. In the final version she'll only have it during certain attack moves.

Preview
Final
There are a couple of images from the game's cutscenes, but these were changed for the final version. Annet's expression is different, her hair band goes behind her ear and has a blue gem, in the final it doesn't and the gem is red.

The preview has Annet lying on a white sheet, in the final it's pink and is larger, going behind her head. The background is also different.

Preview
Final
This screen of Earnest is different. For the final version, he was re-drawn, changes include the color of his whip, and you can see less of his hands in the final version.

The other big difference is that the background was changed.

Preview
This screen is from volume 1, issue 2 of Gamefan. It's similar to the screenshot in EGM, but Annet is in a different place on the screen and the background is different. I guess it's good to know that these screens weren't mock-ups, and in theory there was an actual prototype made for this early version of the game.

Preview
This is another screenshot that was similar to one shown in EGM, but Annet has moved further to the right, showing off more of the level. Annet seems to be doing an uppercut with her sword, she doesn't have this move in the final game.

Preview
This screen and the one below was taken from a preview in issue 22 of Supergame. It shows Annet just a little bit further to the right than in Gamefan's preview, but the picture isn't covered up, revealing that it's a picture of...some guy.

Preview
Final
This screen show an image of Annet from a cutscene, there is one like it in the final game, but annoyingly, the preview image seems a lot more detailed. Why did they make it worse for the final version? The background also appears to not be the flashy anime type of thing the final version has.

Also, the preview image has Annet wearing her pendant, but at this point in the final game she no longer has it.

Preview
Final
Issue 47 of EGM had another preview. This time everything looks similar to the final version, but there are still some differences. This screenshot was the game is paused, and than the word pause has replaced the score. In the final version, pausing removes all character sprites, and the word pause appears in the middle of the screen.

There is something overlapping the life and magic gauges in the preview, not sure what it is, but it's not there in the final version.

Preview
Final
These screens are from volume 1, issue 3 of Gamefan. The first screen shows two images from cutscenes placed next to each other, the one with Annet matches up with the final game, but the one with Earnest has a black background, in the final version, he's seen up against a wall.

Preview
Final
This screen shows level 2. In the preview, Annet is fighting three enemies at once, but in the final version, you only get one enemy on the screen at a time for this level, and the enemies are different to what's seen in the screen.

Preview
Final
This screen shows the boss area of level 1. The robot enemy doesn't appear in this level in the final version, you won't encounter them until level 3 instead. Part of the background is also different -the wall was redesigned for the final version, and no longer has a hole in the wall.

The castle in the distance is also in a different place.

Preview
Final
This screen shows a cutscene image. Its been worked on since the previous time this was seen (see the EGM 41 preview screen above), as the jewel on Annet's hair band is now red, the background has been altered and the sheet goes behind Annet's head. But there are still a few differences when compared to the final version.

Preview
Final
Volume 1, issue 5 of Gamefan had a two page preview of the game, which is where these images are from. The first page's images show the game's cutscenes, which were complete at this point and match what they look like in the final version.

However at the top of the page is a sprite of the first level boss, but his body is colored red, with red eyes. He's green with yellow eyes in the final version.

Preview
Final
The second page of the preview contains a lot of gameplay screens, showing that the game was close to the final version at this point. This screen shows the level 2 boss. His fireball projectile appears to have a glitched palette.

The magic gauge is showing as being partly full, in the final version it will also go to nothing during a boss fight. However, it appears the magic gauge was glitched for these preview screenshots as every screen shows the magic gauge filled to the same place.

You can also see that the HUD is slightly different, and the score is further to the right.

Preview
Final
The level 7 boss fight takes place slightly earlier on in the level in this preview than it does in the final.

Preview
Final
This enemy does appear in level 3 in the final version, but has a green palette rather than the pink colors seen in the preview.

Another thing to point out with all of these screens is that the enemy life bar icons don't appear to be working yet in the preview, they're always just a black square.

Preview
Final
These enemies also appear in level 3 of the final version, but the preview has them in red and green colors. Their colors were changed.

Preview
Final
This screen shows a normal enemy in level 6, however in the final version this level is a boss fight only.

Preview
Final
This screen shows part of level 7. The enemies here don't appear in this level in the final version, and the palettes they have were aren't in the final game either.

The breakable statue was moved slightly to the right in the final version.

Preview
Final
This screen shows level 8. Annet is using a magic attack against a normal enemy, in the final version you can't use magic attacks in this level because it's a boss fight only.

The floor and windows appear to be all black in the preview, in the final they have different colors.

Preview
Final
This screen was used in a Die Hard (the name of a game store, not the movie) ad, and featured in several magazines. It shows part of level 3, but the background and floor are different. The enemies shown don't appear here in the final version either.

Review
Final
These scans are from a review in issue 19 of Consoles +, where they gave the game a respectable 35%. The game seems to be almost the same as the final version, other than the first boss having a red sprite (as seen in one of the Gamefan previews).

Annet also has a magic attack ready for use, in the final version, you can't use magic attacks against bosses, so the magic attack box will always be empty.

Review
Final
Several screenshots in this review show that the game is paused. Originally, the pause word was messily overlap the score in the top right corner. In the final version, it goes on the middle of the screen and removes all character sprites.
