Released in 1998, Marvel Vs. Capcom was the last game in the series to be released on the CPS-2 hardware, and what a brilliant swan song it is. First off, Capcom made a good decision in ditching their side to strictly compromise of Street Fighter characters -whilst classics like Ryu and Chun-Li are still playable, you now get to play as other major Capcom stars like Mega Man and Strider Hiryu. The Marvel side is also good, with the return of Gambit along with two new characters -Venom and War Machine.
The assist attack from the previous game has been ditched, in favor of assist partners. You can call these characters on, and they'll do an attack before leaping off. Sensibly, these assists had limited use, so you could no longer do them whenever you wanted, and have to make them count. Then there is the completely crazy cross over mode -letting you call on your partner and controlling both characters at the same time, with access to an infinite hyper combo gauge for a few seconds!
Clearly this is the true sequel to X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, with it featuring new backgrounds, new or remixed music for every character and an excellent new, tough boss who I think is much cooler than Apocalypse. And for once, an arcade perfect console port was available to everyone in the form of the Dreamcast version. Out of the three Vs. games released on CPS-2, this is the best one.
