Learned all I know from the guild of WHAT????
Gessenkrieg? Gessent Kreed? Forgotten War? Discipline?
Why is it that the character voiced by an American VA has the most confusing line...
When you ask Wolfgang Krauser what his fighting style is, his answer appears to be "Learned all I know from the Guild of Gessenkrieg". At first, I thought this was the name of a German town or city, but couldn't seem to find it anywhere on the net. So I thought it was just the name of a made-up place. I asked around a couple of places, but got completely different answers. One Youtuber told me that it could be "Guild of the Forgotten War." "Krieg" means "War" in German, whilst "Hessen" means "Forgotten" and "Hessenkrieg" refers to a war between branches of "The House of Hessen". Could that be it?
But then, a user of the SNK wiki had a completely different explanation. The user thought Krauser says "Guild of Discipline", but personally I can't hear him say "Discipline" at all. But there was something of interest in the written answer that appears on screen:
This answer makes it clear that he isn't referring to a location in Germany or a foreign name, because there are no Katakana characters present. So next I had to ask Alex at shmuplations on what to do because I had no idea what to put at this point.

And the answer I got was that the above text in English means something like "a mixed martial art passed down from teacher to (only one) student". Hmmm....
"Kenshiro, why does this sound so familiar to us?"
The emphasis of this written answer is on it being a kind of secret, clandestine, esoteric thing. The problem is, it would be very awkward to say this line in English. So much so that it's possible that B.J. Love, who voiced Krauser, decided to ad-lib this line, coming up with the "Guild of Gessenkrieg". The only way to prove it is to ask B.J. Love, which isn't going to happen because:
1) Nobody knows where B.J. Love is.
2) The idea he'd even remember this game doesn't seem that realistic.
3) The idea he'd even remember if he'd ad-libbed a line from a game over 25 years a go is even less realistic.
Maybe an SNK employee could remember, but that seems pretty far-fetched too.
