Synopsis

Kuwabara mentions to Yusuke about a strange dream he had involving three martial artists, but Yusuke doesn't want to know. With their next fight about to begin, Kuwabara wonders where Kurama and Hiei are, but Yusuke says he doesn't know, and the team head off without them. On the way to the stadium, they meet Koenma. Koenma mentions that Yusuke's spirit beast egg will hatch within the next few days, and he's sure the beast will help Yusuke. Koenma also asks about Yusuke's training, hoping that Yusuke learnt Master Genkai's ultimate secret techniques, but Yusuke reveals he only trained in the basics of the spirit wave. Elsewhere, Hiei and Kurama and confronted by two members of the Dr. Ichigaki team: M4 and M5.

At the stadium, Koto asks the two teams to decide on how they want to fight. Kuwabara tells his teammates that the three fighters on the other team were the people he saw in his dream. He reveals that in his dream, they were wondering what to do to help their dying master, when Ichigaki appeared and said he could help them, if they helped him in an experiment. Back in the present, Ichigaki suggests three on three, as he won't be fighting. He also proposes that if his team wins, he gets to keep the bodies of the Urameshi team, as he wants them for use in his experiments. Yusuke agrees under the condition that if his team wins, they get to kill him. The masked fighter then also proposes that the match will be a 6 person battle. Ichigaki quickly crunches some numbers, and calculates fighting like this will give his team a 99.95% chance of winning, so he agrees.

The fight starts and the Urameshi team have to go on the defensive. Their opponents, who say nothing and constantly go on the attack, use powerful techniques. M3 nearly rips Yusuke and Kuwabara to pieces with his hound claw, whilst M2 then hits them with a move that they can't even see. The masked fighter tells her team that spirit energy is something that, if refined, can be made out to be invisible. Yusuke realizes she's trying to say that their opponent's invisible attacks are due to the power of their spirit energy. Kuwabara says they've got spiritual powers too, so why can't they see them? The masked fighter says it's because their spiritual power is still low. Kuwabara wonders how they're supposed to fight them, and the masked fighter says that's something she doesn't know.

Out in the forest, Hiei and Kurama easily kill M4. However M5 reveals a secret weapon: Gatasubaru, a cyborg demon which cannot feel pain. He sets it on the two, and due to his injured arm, Hiei gets grabbed by it.

However Kurama gets Gatasubaru to hit its own arm, causing it to damage itself. He the uses his rose whip to break its circuitry, and shuts it down. Back at the stadium, all the Urameshi team can do is try to avoid the attacks being relentlessly thrown at them. M2 hits Yusuke and Kuwabara with his invisible technique again, knocking them both back. They get up, and see their opponents marching towards them. Yusuke thinks that they can't lose here, but doesn't know what to do. Will the Urameshi team be able to find a means to turn the tables?

Manga differences

-In the manga, Kuwabara's dream is shown first, then he's seen waking up. In the anime, Kuwabara wakes up, and then we see what he dreamed about later on, just before the fight starts.

-Yusuke actually listens to Kuwabara's dream in the hotel room in the manga, and doesn't make a joke about Kuwabara being blown to bits. In the anime he doesn't want to know about Kuwabara's dream, and also makes a joke about it.

-When Koenma speaks to the team, Kuwabara is wearing his jacket in the manga. In the anime, he carries it instead.

-M5 has black hair in the manga, in the anime, he has blonde hair.

-In the manga, Ichigaki calculates the new odds in his head. In the anime, he pulls out a small calculator and uses that to do it.

-The scenes with Shizuru, Keiko and Botan in this episode weren't in the manga.

-The fight was expanded upon in the anime. In the manga, Yusuke doesn't attempt to use his spirit gun, and the masked fighter doesn't jump kick M3. M1 is seen getting ready to use his angel chakram in the manga, but isn't seen actually using it. In the anime, he does perform the move.

-M5 is not seen using a remote to summon Gatasubaru in the manga, like he does in the anime.

-Gatasubaru has a slightly different design in the manga:

The main differences is that it has a larger eye, along with a visible mouth, and looks more organic because of this.

-Gatasubaru is seen hitting Hiei once before managing to grab him in the anime. In the manga, he only grabs him.

-In the manga, Kurama is seen standing between Gatasubaru's hands after getting his rose whip into Gatasubaru's circuits, whilst in the anime, he's standing next to his hands.

-Kurama and Hiei stand on Gatasubaru when Kurama asks M5 if he wants to die. In the anime, they remain on the ground.

Notes

-Gatasubaru is one of the creatures that appears briefly in the show's intro. Oddly, the Gatasubaru featured in the intro is more accurate to Gatasubaru's manga look.

Errors

-During this shot, Yusuke's green wrist bands are missing.
