Out in a forest, Johnny Cage faces his opponent: Scorpion. Scorpion is a distance away from him, but he starts the fight by launching a spear and telling his opponent to get over here! Johnny manages to avoid it.

But the spear starts chasing Johnny around the forest. It almost gets him, but gets snagged around some other trees. Johnny looks around and sees Scorpion in the distance.

Scorpion throws out the spear again, and this time it hits a tree. As he recalls it, Johnny runs over and tries to jump kick him, but Scorpion does something that teleports them both to another place.

Scorpion is gone, but Johnny hears his voice, welcoming him to this place. Scorpion then suddenly appears behind him, and the fight continues.

Johnny swings around a post and hits Scorpion with a drop kick. The two continue exchanging punches and kicks.

Scorpion manages to knock Johnny down. Johnny gets back up and knocks over Scorpion, then swings himself onto a platform above. However, Scorpion then kicks part of the structure, and tells him to get down here.

This causes part of it to collapse, and Johnny falls. He lands in a pile of skeletons, and watches as Scorpion drops down. He pulls off his mask, revealing his skull head.

Johnny sees an old shield, and grabs it. Scorpion breathes fire all over him, but he uses the shield to protect himself.

He then picks up a spear and throws it at Scorpion, and it slices his arm. Johnny then jumps over and slashes Scorpion's chest with the shield...

...then uses it again to slice apart his skull. Scorpion's head explodes...

...and Johnny runs off as Scorpion's entire body catches fire. Scorpion then explodes, and Johnny leaves him a signed autograph.

Meanwhile, Liu Kang's next fight is about to start. Shang Tsung points to his next opponent: Princess Kitana.

The fight begins, and Kitana manages to get Liu into a hold. She tells him that if he won't fight with all of his heart, there is no hope. Liu asks why she would care whether he wins or loses. He manages to get her off.

They continue fighting, but Kitana manages to get him into another hold. She tells him that for him to win his next match, he must use the element which brings life.

Shang shouts out Kitana's name, and Liu breaks away from her hold again. He throws her and then blocks her elbow.

He gets her into a hold, but she just tells him to remember her words. Shang tells Kitana that's enough, and she has disappointed him... not very wise.

A monk leaves two buckets of water in a room, but the monk is actually Rayden in disguise. As he leaves, Liu Kang enters, where he meets his next opponent: Sub-Zero.

The two start fighting, and each of them manage to land several hits on each other.

Liu hits Sub-Zero with a big kick. Sub-Zero moves back, and then starts to create a ball of ice between his hands.

The ice expands, creating a barrier between Sub-Zero and Liu. When it touches Liu's hand, it instantly freezes it.

Kitana appears, and when Liu sees her, he recalls what she said to him earlier about using the element which brings life. Liu sees the bucket of water, and throws it through the ice barrier.

The water spills out of the bucket, and it freezes into a shard of ice. This icy spike pierces into Sub-Zero, pinning him to a wall and killing him.

Shang tells Goro that it's time, as they've let the humans win enough. Goro says at last. He starts fighting in the tournament, and defeats many opponents.

Art is to fight next. His opponent, Goro, enters the ring.

Art starts fighting Goro, and despite hitting him a few times, his moves do no damage to Goro. Goro batters Art around. Art manages to get back up, and tries punching him, but Goro grabs his fists.

Goro resumes his attack, and eventually knocks Art down. Art gets back up, but Goro punches him a few more times, then picks him up. He looks over to Shang, who gives the order to finish him.

Goro tells Art it's time to die, and hits him one more time. Art falls, and Goro yells out in triumph.

Goro picks Art up, and Shang says that was a flawless victory. He then says Art's soul is his, and claims it.

Liu, Johnny and Sonya tell Rayden that they can't win now, how could they possibly take on Goro or Shang? Rayden says that's a good question, but reveals that Goro can be killed. He also says that Shang Tsung's power can be destroyed by mortal men and women. They can overcome any adversary, no matter how bizarre their powers may seem -there is always a way. He tells them all that only one thing can defeat them: their own fear. They must first face their fears if they are to conquer them. He tells Johnny he's afraid he's a fake, and will rush into any fight just to prove that he's not. He will fight bravely enough, but also foolishly and carelessly, and will be beaten. He then tells Sonya that she is afraid to admit even she sometimes needs help. If she is afraid to trust, she will lose.

As he walks off, Liu follows him and asks about himself. Rayden tells him he fears his own destiny, he already fled it once when he went to America. It has brought him the guilt for the death of his own brother. Liu says he's responsible for Chan's death, but Rayden tells him no, every mortal is responsible for his own destiny. Chan believed this, so why can't he? Liu says he tried. Rayden tells him that despair is the most dangerous fear of all, something he knows, and so does Shang Tsung. Shang can peer into your soul, and uses the fear he sees against his opponent. He tells Liu he must be prepared.

The next morning, Liu meditates, thinking about his brother's death. Sonya tells Johnny that Goro has never been beaten, and if Johnny goes up against him, he'll be beaten. Johnny says if he doesn't, Goro will finish them off one at a time. If he challenges him now, he can finish this. Sonya thinks he's trying to make this sound really simple, and it isn't. Johnny says it is, as he can't let what happened to Art happen to her. Sonya tells him not to dare do this to protect her, but he says he has a plan. As he walks off, Sonya says she can't believe this -he is the most egotistical, self-deluded person she has ever met! Johnny tells her she forgot to say good looking.

Johnny goes to Shang, and asks him to be allowed to fight Goro next. Shang says he's not supposed to fight Goro now, so is he that eager to die? Johnny says he isn't the one who is going to die. Shang calls him very foolish, but that's the true sign of a hero. He may want to protect his friends, but make no mistake: they too will die, after Goro destroys him. Johnny asks what the problem is. Shang tells him that as absurd as his request is, he shall grant it. In return, he reserves the right to challenge the winner himself, or another of his choosing, in a place designated by himself for the final battle of the tournament.

Johnny tells him he's got it, but Rayden then appears and disagrees. Shang tells him he's too late, and the rules are quite clear -a deal's a deal. As he walks off, Rayden asks Johnny what he has done. Johnny says he made a choice, as this is their tournament. Mortal Kombat is something they fight in. As he walks off, Rayden is happy that one of them has at last understood.

Later on, Goro prepares for his next fight. Johnny appears, and as he removes his sunglasses, Goro snatches them from him and then crushes them.

Shang tells Goro to finish Johnny quickly. Goro says that this puny mortal will be no problem, he'll crush him with one blow! He goes to hit him only for Johnny to do the splits, and punch Goro...

...in the groin. As Goro staggers around, Johnny makes his way upwards. Shang calls Goro an imbecile, whilst Johnny quietly admits that hitting Goro hurt!

Shang tells Goro to follow Johnny and finish him. Johnny has to stop when he realizes he's at the edge of a cliff. He hears Goro heading his way, so he hides. Goro walks out...

...and after Johnny tells him those sunglasses were $500, he kicks him. Goro flips over, so Johnny gives him another kick. Goro falls off the cliff, but manages to grab onto the edge.

Johnny tells him this is where he falls down. Goro loses his grip, and Johnny watches as he falls to his doom.
