WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game

The arcade version of this game was released in 1995, and the console versions were released in the same year. Developed by the same team who did NBA Jam, WWF Wrestlemania plays quite differently to previous WWF games, and features faster action along with each character having several over the top special moves. It is also one of the few 32X games that only saw an American release. The 32X version is similar to the Genesis port, but boats several improvements. The graphics are noticeably better, with larger sprites and more colors, and the character speech -which there is plenty of -is far clearer. The only drawback is that this version runs at 30 frames per second, whilst the Genesis version ran at 60.

I'm not a wrestling fan, but I liked this game somewhat -at least in the versus mode, and the co-op mode. The way it plays is much faster paced than other wrestling games I've played, and the special moves -which include Mortal Kombat style super uppercuts -made it more appealing. However the CPU is very cheap and will pummel you without mercy, so make sure to have a friend when playing this game.

Info

Pick a wrestler and then fight your way through many opponents to take the WWF championship belt. Each character has their own punches, kicks, throws and special moves. You can also block attacks by holding down the block button, but this won't save you from throws. The aim is to reduce your opponent's life gauge to nothing, and then pin them. Matches are done in a best 2 out of 3 pins format.

The single player modes vary between you only have to fight one opponent to having to take two on at once. The two player modes let you fight each other, but there is also a co-operative option that lets you and a friend fight together against 2 CPU opponents. Sadly there isn't a 4 player option.

By using certain moves and throws, you will increase the purple gauge underneath your character's life gauge. Once this is full, the word "combo!" will appear. Each wrestler has their own super combo, which lets you hit the opponent multiple times without them being able to do anything about it. The super combos vary, but all involve pressing different buttons in sequence to use each attack in the combo. If you do play this game I would recommend using a six button controller, as the standard three button controller makes the controls far more complex.

Cheats

Random character select
At the character select screen, player 1 needs to highlight Doink and then press up and start. Player 2 needs to highlight Razor Ramon and then press up and start.

Infinite combo gauge
Pause the game and then press press B, A, down, B, up, left, left. You will then hear the words "boom shakalaka!". Unpause the game and both you and your opponent will have a infinite "combo!" gauge.

Trivia

As noted above, the 32X version of this game was only released in America. This is a little strange since the Genesis version saw a European release. All of Acclaim's other 32X games were released in America, Europe and Japan.
