Toughman Contest

Published by Electronic Arts, Toughman Contest is a boxing game which was released for the Genesis and 32X. Pick from one of many different boxers, each one with their own customizable move set. Then enter the Toughman Contest and work your way to the top, where you'll have the chance to fight Butterbean himself. As you fight in each match you'll need to dodge your opponent's attacks and then strike back to win, going crazy just trying to punch out your opponent won't work.

The 32X version features everything from the Genesis version along with some improved visuals. The most notable difference is with the backgrounds, which are much more detailed and have more animation going on in them, and look totally different from what they looked like on the Genesis.

It has the same problems as the Genesis version though: the main one being that the game is very difficult. Even your first opponent can make mincemeat of you within seconds if you aren't careful. There are some other little issues, such as that there is no music at all during a fight, only crowd noise and sound effects. And, as with quite a few Genesis to 32X games, this version doesn't offer much over the Genesis version, if you already have it. However as the only boxing game on the 32X it may be worth checking out if you're a fan of the sport.

Info

Pick a boxer and then fight it out. Exhibition mode lets you play a single match against the CPU, whilst the Toughman Contest mode lets you fight against many opponents as you try to work your way up the league. Whilst the game doesn't have a battery backup option, it does have a password system, letting you pick up where you last got to without having to re-play through everything. Finally there is also a cusomizable tournament mode, where you can pick which boxers are going to be in the tournament, and how many boxers will be participating in it.

During the match you must try and dodge your opponent's strikes and then hit them back. Using the d-pad you can move to the left or right, or you can duck by holding down. Watch your opponent carefully to see what they will try next, but you'll have to be quick to succesfully avoid taking hits. Boxers have left and right jabs, along with other techniques that can do more damage. Once your knock down your opponent, they have 10 seconds to get back up or the fight will be over. Usually the CPU will be able to get back up several times during a match, but if you knock them down enough times and then wear down their lifebar to nothing, you can finish them off -some moves will even send them flying out of the ring.

When you pause the game you have several options to choose from, such as seeing some advice from your corner man. You can also replay the fight so far, or look at statistics of what has happened in the match, such as how many times a certain type of attack has been used. And if things aren't going your way you can also choose to just throw in the towel.

Trivia

Eric Esch -better known as Butterbean -made an appearance in the Genesis version's intro sequence. Strangely the 32X version removes him, although he still appears as an opponent in the game (and also appears on the box).
