Hyper Fighting was on the CPS-1 hardware, whilst SSFII was the first game for Capcom's new arcade board, imaginatively called the CPS-2. There were many changes in SSFII. Images from Hyper Fighting are on the left, whilst pictures on the right are from Super Street Fighter II.

Different title screens.

Hyper Fighting uses the same intro the two games before it had, but SSFII features a completely new intro, showing Ryu throwing a hadouken.

Hyper Fighting has the same character select screen as Champion Edition, but SSFII has a new screen. There are four new characters to choose from -T. Hawk, Fei Long, Dee Jay and Cammy - plus the world map is different, the fonts have been changed, and there is new artwork for each of the twelve returning characters.

Hyper Fighting had the same stages as Champion Edition, but all of the stages were changed for SSFII. Some were partially re-drawn, whilst others were re-colored. Ryu's was re-colored.

Honda's stage was re-colored.

Blanka's stage was partially re-drawn, the people watching the fight were mostly changed, the clouds are different, the straw roof on the hut is different and the colors for everything have been changed.

Guile's stage was very partially re-drawn, with the jet being slightly different (check the cockpit) and the radio being changed, but for the most part, the colors were just changed.

Ken's stage was mostly re-drawn, with it being modernized and featuring a new, sleeker boat with new people watching the fight.

Chun-Li's stage was re-colored but the faces on some of the people watching were changed, and the cyclists who go past now and then are also different. Also, in SSFII, the clouds are no longer animated.

Zangief's stage was re-colored, but a couple of the guys watching the fight have been re-drawn.

Dhalsim's stage was re-colored.

Balrog's stage was partially re-drawn, with the crowd being changed, the cars being modernized and the words "NIN NIN HALL" now flash in SSFII.

Vega's stage was re-colored and partially re-drawn. In SSFII, the cage now drops down at the start of the first round.

Sagat's stage was partially re-drawn and now features a city in the background.

Bison's stage was mostly re-drawn, featuring new buildings in the background and new colors.

I'm not going to show all the differences here, but nearly all the endings in SSFII have been changed slightly when compared to Hyper Fighting. Ryu's ending has improved animation of him walking into the sunset, Chun-Li now has two endings and the four boss characters now have proper endings, rather than the text based offerings seen in Hyper Fighting.

Certain animation frames were changed in SSFII, here are just a few examples. Of course, there is also the matter of the new attacks and special moves most of the returning fighters have been given. See the individual character pages for more info on that.

Other Changes

-SSFII runs much more slowly than the previous game. I've read it is either the same speed as Champion Edition, or slightly faster than it.

-The music in SSFII has been re-recorded. Check the music page to listen to it. The characters have had their move speech recorded with new voice actors.

-SSFII has a new secret credits sequence, showing fighters doing moves in slow motion.

-In SSFII, each character now has 8 different colors to choose from, rather than just 2 as in Hyper Fighting.

-The red fireball glitch has been taken out of SSFII. Ryu now has it as a proper move, whilst Ken only has his normal blue fireballs.

-Rather than fight everyone, you now fight 8 random opponents, and then the 4 bosses in SSFII.

-Guile and Vega have new win poses in SSFII.
