These scans are from the July 1991 issue of Beep! Mega Drive. This screen shows part of the first level. There are some minor differences in the background, but the biggest difference is Earnest, who has different colors. He has blue hair and wears a green short sleeved jacket, in the final he has blonde hair and has a red jacket.

Some small background changes in the top left corner.

Here's the boss room of level 1. The door to the left is still locked, in the final version you have to use a key to open it to get into the room. The platform the idol is on has a black background, in the final it has the same brick pattern the rest of the background features.

The September 1991 issue of Beep! Mega Drive had another preview of the game. This preview has a lot of screens showing the green Earnest sprite, but there are a few other shots with some other differences.

This screenshot shows the boss of the sixth level, but the sprite for it is a lot less detailed. The background may look different here but there's a way to get the boss here if you spawn it without dropping down, as seen here.

One of the screenshots in this preview shows what appears to be a level that was cut from the final game. Either this level was set at night, or the background was completely black here.

The October issue of Beep! Mega Drive had yet another preview. As usual there are a lot of screenshots showing green Earnest, but this shot of the fourth level shows that the skull clouds at one point were just purple spheres.

This shot of the first level shows different, brighter colors for the meat sprite, and the spikes are less detailed too.

The preview also has the forest level listed as stage 2. In the final game, this is the ninth level.

The November 1991 issue of Beep! Mega Drive had yet another preview. As usual, all screenshots feature green Earnest. However this new build of the game they covered now has the correct level listed for the game's second level. It still has a few differences though.

In this screenshot, you can see that the background is different, and the vine has a much brighter green sprite.

One of the hidden areas in the level originally had a narrower tunnel, which lacked sprites. The background is different and the applies originally had green sprites, rather than the red the final game features.

This shot shows a different level layout than what the final version has. Amusingly, it looks like in both versions it would have been impossible to get past this bit without taking damage.

The screen shows part of the fifth level, although the preview has it listed as stage 4. Anyway, this machinegun enemy is in a slightly different place when compared to the final.

Another preview (did they push this game or what) was featured in the December 1991 issue of Beep! Mega Drive. This preview was the first one to show images from the game's cutscenes, so they must have been added. The ones featured all seem to match up with the final version, other than this one of Annet. The preview has a background, strangely the final version removed this and featured nothing but black.

Beep! Mega Drive's January 1992 issue had a review of the game. The screenshot used for this shows the eighth level, but the boss has a very different and very weird looking sprite that was re-done for the final game. The smaller enemies appear to be mini versions of the boss, whilst in the final, the other enemies have different sprites.

This screen is from a preview featured in issue 26 of Electronic Gaming Monthly. It shows the first boss, the ring is in a different place and the colors for the boss are a little different. Earnest also has no life at all, and at the top right you have "ITEM" instead of "WEAPON". The item box is empty, but there is a number by it.

In the final version the box will always have something in it and if it's the whip, there's no number present.

Another Die Hard ad image. This shows the level six boss, but the floor is different to what the final version has.
