With X-Men Vs. Street Fighter being a smash hit a sequel was inevitable, and 1997 saw the release of one. Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter was an update to the previous game, which changed the cast around and added a few extra features. Whilst it still had the tag team format from before, you could now call on your partner to perform an assist attack. Whenever a hyper combo is performed, the background changes to a psychedelic light display. The backgrounds were all given new colors or changes, such as a large crowd being added to the mall stage. Capcom also removed many of the infinite combos that plagued the previous game.

However the main problem a lot of people have with this game is the cast. The Marvel side contains popular characters like Captain American and Spider-Man, but it also brings back the likes of Shuma-Gorath. Cyclops over Iron Man is another strange choice and where is Doctor Doom at? Or Thanos for that matter? Omega Red was a decent pick at least. The street fighters are almost the same as before, only with Sakura and Dan replacing Cammy and Charlie. Whilst I do like these two characters, their presence makes the SF side very shoto heavy -you've got Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Sakura, Dark Sakura, Dan and Cyber Akuma. That's another thing -the bosses are dull. Apocalypse should have been taken out and replaced with someone like Galactus. Cyber Akuma is just an edit of Akuma's normal sprite.

Plus when you look at it, the only truly new character in this game is Norimaro, who is only in the Japanese version. All of the other characters are from previous games. There are no new stages either, with all of them being tweaked versions of the ones found in X-Men Vs. Street Fighter. Whilst this game is still enjoyable, I think it was just made as a stop-gap whilst Capcom were working on the real sequel: Marvel Vs. Capcom.
